2. INDEPENDENT FILM COMPANIES
• Independent films have less funding than conglomerates. They tend to first be shown at film festivals
before an official release. They don’t have famous or well known actors, because this would mean that
their budget would have to be much higher. However these factors do not affect the success of an
independent film. For example a recent independent movie ‘Get Out’ by Bumhouse pictures spent $4.5
million to create the film, but made a profit of six times its starting profit only during its opening
weekend.
• In some cases independent companies are funded by conglomerates. As investors they would get a
percentage of the makings. They can also receive government funding.
• Some people prefer to self finance, so all funding comes through people who are a part of the
production cast.
3. BLOCKBUSTERS
• Blockbusters make their money through cinemas, DVD, renting and television. They have the ability to
make their media available across different platforms (cross media convergence). Advertisements and
merchandise are also a way of funding.
