An independent film is made outside of the Hollywood system, allowing the director to pursue their individual vision without studio interference. Independent films have smaller budgets financed through individual businessmen and loans from film institutions. They use film festivals to garner attention and critical acclaim in order to secure distribution deals, as they do not have the marketing power of large studio films. Independent films tend to have more realistic, narrative-driven stories that center around sociopolitical or socioeconomic topics compared to big-budget Hollywood blockbusters.
