Social isolation is defined as "an objective and quantifiable reflection of reduced social network size
and paucity of social contact" (Steptoe et al., 2014). Often used interchangeably with social

Victor, 2011) that as one advances in age, one's social network tends to diminish for the following
reasons: the increased occurrence of chronic ailments; the bereavement of a spouse; and entry into
long term care. They further explain that these events usually reduce the urge for socialising, thus
