4. Inequality Income vs. Wealth
Income:-
• The widening gap between
annual incomes • How much
money you make in one given year
.
Wealth:-
• The global social issue of wealth
being distributed unequally
5. Why Must we Focus on Wealth Inequality First?
Although two people may have the same income they
can have different net worth.
For example person A has an income of $25,000 per year
but has no assets and 0 net worth.
Person B also makes an income of $25,000 per year but
has a net worth of 1 million dollars because of
inheriting assets.
Person B is much more financially secure even
though he has the same income as person A This is a
simple example of why we must seek to distribute
wealth more evenly.
6. World’s Future Wealth Distribution
• China is projected to produce 27% of the
world wealth.
• China will claim a high position in the world
wealth, yet America will lose world wealth.
• African Territories are predicted remain small
on the international financial stage .
• Eastern European territories are also predicted
to have decreasing proportions of world wealth.
7. Countries Wealth Distribution
• U.S – 75.4% of the wealth owned by 10% of
the citizens
• Denmark – 72.2 of the wealth owned by 10%
of the citizens
• Switzerland – 71.5% of the wealth owned by
10% of the citizens
• Sweden – 71.1% of the wealth owned by
10% of the citizens
• Israel – 68.9% of the wealth owned by 10%
of the citizens
• Norway – 65.9% of the wealth owned by
10% of the citizens
8. Problems of Inequality &
Power
1. In this Figure text books
illustrates the wealth per adult by
country.
2. This inequality of power and
wealth is causing an increase of
poverty problems.
9. Reasons for Wealth Inequality – Theories
1. • Structural – Functionalist Perspective –
Inequalities in the economy serve a
functional purpose by providing a labor
force to do undesirable work.
2. • Feminist Theorists – have drawn that
economic inequalities is gendered and has
impaired access to resources for women
and children.
10. Solutions – How to Solve Wealth
Inequality
1. Universal Health Care – Providing
health care to all countries instead of
hoping individuals will save money
to purchase health care will boost
wealth equality.
2. Inheritance Tax – Encouraging people
to spend their money back into the
economy instead of holding it for
next generations
