1. Looking back at your preliminary task, (college magazine) what do you feel
you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
I personally feel that my photography skills have improved as I now know about 3 point lighting, the
rule of thirds, focus, composition and filling the space.
I have also learnt how to do photo manipulation by using the following tools - Polygonal lasso tool,
Magnetic lasso tool, Eraser tool, Quick selection tool, healing tool. As well as using Effects such as
Drop shadow, glow, adjusting hue, saturation and brightness. For example on the smaller image of
the contents page. I took a picture of my friend out doors and decided it didn’t look right with the
overall theme of the magazine so I cut her out of the picture using the quick selection tool, then the
polygonal lasso too and finally the eraser to clean up rounded corners. As it was taken outside I
adjusted the brightness and saturation. And used a picture I took from an old concert to put in the
background to make it look like it’s her concert.
2. As we took photos we experimented with props such as a suitcase and a guitar and wore different
outfits to suit the genre.
I have learnt that nothing should block the models face in a picture. All coverlines and headings
should frame the models face making him/her be the focus of the page. I have also learnt what
makes a good cover image. My first ancillary task featured a girl working with her back towards the
camera and only some of her face was showing. I now know it should feature someone looking
towards the camera with their full face in shot using the Rule of thirds. I also now know how to fill
dead space. Finally, my use of lighting is a lot better with the use of three point lighting as this gives
the model an overall better look and extenuates all of the key features.
