2. Sound
The trailer uses non diegetic sound in the form of slow tense music that
allows the tension and suspense of the movie to be portrayed to the
audience.
The trailer also uses a voice over. The voice is deep and very serious
which helps, like the music, build tension for the viewers causing them
to become intrigued with the plot and want to watch more.
Also diegetic sounds such as the voices of characters and action are
used to give the audience and idea of the plot.
3. Lighting
The trailer uses a lot of dark lighting and dark colours in general. This
gives the trailer and eerie feel and helps build suspense.
Also it shows the conventions of the genre as colours such as red which
are used have connotations of blood and danger which is typical of the
crime thriller genre.
The dark lighting also helps connote mystery and entices the viewer to
want to watch more.
4. Editing
In terms of editing and the shots used the trailer varies. For example at
the start slow and more calm scenes are used that are played for a
decent duration of more than a few seconds. This helps build mystery
within the trailer and lures viewers in.
Where as other parts of the trailer uses more action packed and faster
shots in which have a short duration and the trailer cuts quickly to the
next shot. This is used to create excitement and grab the viewers
attention and keep them on the edge of their seat.
5. Camera work
In terms of camera work, the trailer uses a wide variety of different
shots. For example, many close ups are used throughout the trailer of
characters faces which show seriousness and in some cases fear. This
allows the trailer to convey to the audience how the characters are
feeling and therefore cause the audience to share these feelings for
example the audience might feel the fear of the characters and this will
keep them on the edge of their seats and entice them.
The use of lots of close ups also helps build mystery as not a lot of the
scene and setting is given away which keeps the audience interested
and want to go out and watch the rest of the film.
Also the antagonist is always kept out of view from the viewer not giving
too much of the plot away keeping the film exciting.
6. Titles
Many titles are used throughout the trailer such as the production
company and distributors like new line cinema which is the first shot we
see showing the significance of that company. Also actors names are
used which is helpful in this case because actors such as Morgan
Freeman and Brad Pitt are huge names which will attract a wider target
audience.
Many of these titles a presented with a black or dark background which
is conventional of the crime thriller genre as it gives frightening and
disturbing connotations adding to the films eerie feel and mystery.
