2. —What were the key points of Barthe’s
Hermeneutic Code (enigma code)?
It’s the idea that films will create suspense through creating
mystery and questions for the audience to ponder. By the
audience not knowing how the plot will go it creates tension
and this allows for an enjoyable and intense film. Examples of
this could be the introduction of new unknown characters
introduced into the film who raise questions and therefore
create suspense as the audience fears the unknown.
3. —What are 3-5 enigmas that will be
presented in your trailer?
—
Will Ronnie either choose to side with the mob and kill
his best friend or will he stay loyal and fight alongside
Harry? Do the mob know about the true identity of the
police informant? What are Harry’s intentions and
reasons for betraying the mob? Are they justifiable? Will
the pair make it out alive?
4. —Which of these will be answered?
What will the answers be?
To try and create as much anticipation as possible we will
try and reveal as little as possible, but potentially one
enigma we could reveal would be Harrys intentions and
the answer would be his intentions are good and in the
best interests of both himself and Ronnie. This will allow
the audience to empathise with the character and get
behind him.
5. —Which enigmas will be left
unanswered and why?
As stated previously the majority of enigmas will be left
unanswered. For example, Ronnie decision as to whether
he chooses his best friend or the powerful mob. This is to
allow the audience to have more reasons to go and watch
the film and found out as it creates suspense and immense
anticipation.
7. How will the opening of your trailer establish your
protagonist's equilibrium?
We will use many close ups that emphasise the emotions
of the characters in the beginning of the trailer. For
example, we could shoot a scene where Ronnie and harry
are counting money and then cut to a close up of Ronnie
smiling indicating that at this period in time and situation
the character is happy and their world is in equilibrium
8. How will the equilibrium be disrupted? What/who are the
agents of disruption?
The equilibrium will be disrupted when Harry gets
arrested. The agents of disruption at this point will be the
police as the have now set in motion a chain of events
that has potentially put the two main characters in danger.
However it could also be argued the mob is the agent of
disruption as they pose the main threat to the characters
despite the danger they are in being due to the actions of
the police detectives.
9. How will your protagonist recognise that the disorder has occurred?
Ronnie will begin to see the panic around the mob and how
desperate they are to catch the rat in time before more of his
friends and fellow gangsters get locked up in prison. He may
already see people be taken in by the police and locked away
and notice less of a cash flow due to the threat of police watch
which will dampen his mood and indicate a clear disruption in
the equilibrium and blissful period he was previously
experiencing. Harry will also witness this but also have to suffer
the constant stress of trying to feed the police information and
not get caught.
10. How will they attempt to repair the damage of the disruption?
Ronnie will attempt to find the rat and when he finds out
that the informant is his best friend will have to make a
decision to either side with him and fight the mob or take
out his lifelong pal. The two different possible plot arcs
that are not revealed in the trailer both present different
ways of solving the disruption and damage. However,
both will most likely involve someone getting killed.
11. If your film was to be made – how would the ending be
resolved (the full film, not the trailer)?
We would see Ronnie make a decision in which he sides
with his lifelong friend fulfilling the wishes of the
audience and jump in the way of harry taking a bullet for
him while harry takes out the mobs kingpin. Ronnie
survives from his wounds and the pair are put into police
protection and both immune from all prior convictions of
previous crimes.
