2. • There are basically two types of letters 1. Formal Letters
2. Informal Letters.
• Formal letters are written for official or business purposes. These letter s are short and to the point.
Categorisation of formal letters depends upon the matter being discussed in these letters. e.g.
enquiry letter, order letter, application letter etc.
•Informal letters are also called personal letters. They are written to family, friends, relatives,
neigbours or to acquaintances. These letters may or may not have a concrete reason for writing.
There is no limitation of length for these letters. They can be several pages long. They may be
written just to share an experience, enquire about somebody, or for invitations, thanking and
congratulating etc.

3. • Invitation letters are written to invite people for an event.
e.g. Letter of invitation on the marriage of daughter.

5. • Letters of request are written to make requests. They can be request for payments, extension of deadline, assistance etc.
