2. Energy Contained in theEnergy Contained in the WindsWinds
The power in the wind can be computed by using the concepts
of kinetics.
Kinetic Energy = ½ mv2.
Amount of Air passing is given by
m = AVm = AV
= ½ AV.V2 watts
= ½ AV3 watts
A = ( /4)D2 (Sq. m)
Available wind power Pa =( D2 V3 )/8 watts
3. Extraction of Energy by Conventional WindExtraction of Energy by Conventional Wind
TurbinesTurbines
The Conventional Turbines work on the Drag/Lift produced by the Winds
on the Blades.
BETZ’S LAW : According to Betz's law, no turbine can capture more
than 16/27 (59.3%) of the kinetic energy in wind.
This is analogous to Carnot Efficiency for Heat Engines
4. Problems Associated with Conventional WindProblems Associated with Conventional Wind
Energy GenerationEnergy Generation
The Selection of Suitable sites: Very low number of suitable
sites.
The cost of land to be utilized.
The suitable speed of winds is not available throughout the
year.
The fluctuations in Winds Speeds is high in case of naturally
produced winds.
5. The Idea behind the ProjectThe Idea behind the Project
The project utilizes the following things in order to achieve the
power from the winds in a different and non conventional way..
To Produce the power by using Artificially Created Winds.
The Artificial winds are Created by the movement of
Vehicles on a highway.
7. The choice of Suitable turbineThe choice of Suitable turbine
The two principle types of Wind Turbines are . . .
•The motion is dependent on the Lift delivered by the air.
•The operation of the Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine
necessitates the existence of very highly laminar flow of air.
•The motion is dependent on the Drag Force delivered by the•The motion is dependent on the Drag Force delivered by the

•The operation of the Vertical Axis Wind Turbine does not
necessitates the existence of very highly laminar flow of air.
•The mechanism can handle air flows from more than one
directions.

Due to its Simplicity and Yet Efficient Performance,
the SAVONIUS Wind Turbine is Chosen for the Project
9. Advantages ofAdvantages of SavoniusSavonius TurbineTurbine
• Simplicity in Geometry.
• Easy to Design and Install.
• It has high Wind Collecting capacity.
• Due to less Complexity in Design, its easier to perform the
Maintenance in future.Maintenance in future.
• Lower Efficiency of Operation
• Rotational Speed is less.
• Large Diameter Turbines are required for proper power
generation.
10. Wind and Blade Interaction for aWind and Blade Interaction for a SavoniusSavonius TurbineTurbine
11. MethodologyMethodology
• Analyse wind patterns and characteristics on a highway. By gathering data
from the drag force created by different vehicles at max speed limit on
highway.
• Evaluate various turbine designs to predict which would be best for
highway uses based largely on durability but also on the following factors:
vibrations, reliability, efficiency, manufacturability and cost to build.
Analysing Wind PatternsAnalysing Wind Patterns
• The running vehicle on highway create a drag force in the motion of its
propagation.
• The average drag velocity on a busy highway was found to be 8 m/s.

16. Introduction of ShroudsIntroduction of Shrouds
Shrouds can be a very essential part of a vertical axis wind turbine.
Shrouds creates a funnel effect in the wind turbine.
It is used to guide the wind flow and direct it towards the blade in a
closed environment thus eliminating cross winds and more force on
the blade.
Use of DynamoUse of Dynamo
The Dynamo uses rotating coils of wire and magnetic fields to
convert mechanical rotation into a pulsing alternate electric current
through Faraday's law of induction.
Dynamo produces alternating current that can be converted into
direct current using rectifier to charge the 12v battery cells and thus
the power produced by the turbine is stored
17. Consideration of LossesConsideration of Losses
• Efficiency of Wind Capture by Turbine.
• Efficiency of power transmission from blade to the shaft
which depends on frictional losses.
• Electrical Efficiency of the Dynamo to convert in input
power into electricity.
• Losses in bearings.
The losses due to friction are proportional to the
velocity of sliding or rubbing.
Whereas, the efficiencies of Wind Capture and
Dynamo are considered constant for given range of usual
speeds.

19. Advantages of The IdeaAdvantages of The Idea
• The idea represents an independent source of
electricity production.
• The production is environment friendly.
• The equipment no longer relies on natural
wind convections; it relies on the induced
turbulence in the vicinity of a moving vehicle
• The production of energy is 24x7, unlike solar
cells and wind mills which are dependent on
ambient parameters.ambient parameters.
• There is no need of transmission of energy
because the energy is consumed at the point of
production only.
• The idea is sophisticated and cost effective.
