• Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA) of U.S.
Dept. of Defense seeks to protect confidential
military information
• 1969 – ARPA forms ARPANET, first Internet
• 1990s – Internet becomes available to general public
• 1995 – Yahoo creates directory of sites and pages to
help people find good information

• Late 1990s – Dot Com Industry booms Internet
grows too large for Yahoo to organize well
• Google forms after creating a way to count links and
give good relevance to searches
• Sept. 2001 – The 9-11 attacks cause the market to
plunge, as does the dot com industry
• Web gets reinvigorated as a social networking tool
as well as commercial business
