2. WHAT ARE PARTS OF SPEECH?
Are words that we use everyday.
Divided into eight classes according to the kind of
work they do.
These eight classes or words are known as
PARTS OF SPEECH.
There are therefore EIGHT Parts of Speech in
English Grammar
4. 1. NOUN: WORD THAT NAMES
A PERSON (Mary, Lecturer)
A PLACE (Perlis, city)
A THING (UniMAP, class)
A QUALITY (sorrow, happy)
AN ACTIVITY ( Tennis, Football)
5. ARTICLE
English has two articles:
1. the = definite article
*refer to specific or particular nouns
2. a/an = indefinite article
* modify non-specific or non-particular nouns
Example:
"Let's read the book," =a specific book.
"Let's read a book” = any book rather than a specific
book.
6. NOUNS SOMETIME TAKE THE
DEFINITE ARTICLE THE.
the + specific singular and plural nouns.
-the hammer, the nails.
the + one-of-a-kind objects
-Look at the sun! , This is the last cupcakes.
the + names of ocean, seas, rivers deserts.
-The Atlantic Ocean, The Sahara Desert
the + names of colleges and universities containing
the word of.
-She studied at the University of New Mexico.
7. 2. PRONOUN
IS A WORD USED IN PLACE OF ONE OR
MORE NOUNS.
Example:
Mr. Ken gave Mr. Ken’s pen to Mr. Ken’s wife,
Mrs. Ken; Mrs. Ken was grateful for the pen.
Revised: Mr Ken gave his pen to his wife, Mrs.
Ken; she was grateful for the pen.

9. 3. VERBS
Expresses Physical Or Mental Action
Example: jump, talk, write, play, drop, pick, call, do,
does, did, have, has, had, shall, should, will, would,
can, could, may, might, must, is, are, was, were
Every Sentence Must Have A Verb
He kicked the ball.
It can bite.
He must arrive now!
10. 4. ADJECTIVE
DESCRIBES A NOUN OR A PRONOUN
When to use?
1. Before a noun:
example: The rich man, The hardworking students
2. After a non- active verb (am,is, was, are, were)
example: The student is lazy.
Sudirman was popular.
11. 5. ADVERBS
gives additional information about a verb,
an adjective or another adverb
Example:
Modify Verb: It is tiring to run quickly.
Modify Adj: The cruise ship was incredibly
huge.
Modify Adv: John plays tennis very well.
13. Most adverbs are formed by adding “ly” to
adjective.
EXAMPLES:
Adjectives Adverb
Slow Slow + ly
Patient Patient + ly
Sweet Sweet + ly
Careless Careless + ly
Reluctant Reluctant + ly
14. 6. CONJUNCTION
Conjunctions are joining words.
Is used to join words or groups of words
Examples:
For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So (FANBOYS),
because, since, if, so, although, before, etc…
I ate the pizza and the pasta.
Call the movers when you are ready.
15. 7. PREPOSITIONS
Prepositions are the words that indicate
location.
Usually, prepositions show this location in the
physical world
17. 8. INTERJECTION
Interjections are short exclamations that express
emotion like Oh!, Um! Goodness! or Ah!
EXAMPLES:
ah
To express pleasure - "Ah, that feels nice.
To express realization - "Ah, now I
understand.
To express surprise – “Ah! I've won!"
