5. FORM
We form the present simple with the
subject (nouns or personal pronoun) and
the verb.
• The third person singular takes –s or
–es in the verb in affirmative.
I play – He plays
I go – He goes

6. FORM
• We use subject + don’t + base for of
the verb in all persons in the negatives
except for the third person singular. We
use subject + doesn’t + base for of the
verb in this person.
I don’t play
He doesn’t play.

7. FORM
• We use do + subject + base for of the
verb in all persons in the questions
except for the third person singular. We
use does + subject + base for of the
verb in this person.
Do you like football?
Does he like tennis?

WH-questions
• Questions which start with We use Do /
Does have a Yes / No answer.
Do you like ice cream?
Yes, I do / No, I don´t
• We use Who, What, Where, When, etc. to
ask questions and request information.
When do you go to the cinema?
On Sundays.

10. SPELLING: 3rd Person Singular
Affirmative.
• Most verbs take –s in the third person singular

• Verbs ending in –ss, –sh, –ch, –x, or –o take –es.
You watch  she watches You go  she goes
• Verbs ending in a consonant + y drop –y and takes –ies.
We fly  It flies We tidy  It tidies
• Verbs ending in a vowel + y, take –s.
They play  He plays They stay  He stays

11. Pronunciation
–s or –es in the third person singular is
pronounced:
• /s/ with verbs ending in /f/, /k/, /p/, or /t/
sounds.
He sits
• /iz/ with verbs ending in /s/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, or
/z/ sounds.
He watches
• /z/ with verbs ending in all other sounds.
He runs

12. USE
The Present Simple is used:
•For habits or actions that happen regularly.
I watch TV every day.
•For situations that are always the same.
We live in Bristol.
I like ice cream.

13. Time Expressions
• We use with present
simple the next time
expression.
• Always, often,
usually, never, etc.
• Every day/week, etc.
• In the
morning/spring, etc.
• At the weekend, at
night, etc.
• Once/twice/three
times a week/day
etc.
• On Mondays/
Monday Mornings,
etc.
