2. WHAT DOES CULTURAL ORIGINS OF
BEHAVIOR AND COGNITION MEAN?
• Cultural Origins of Behavior and cognition
means that every culture has different types of
morals and guidelines that they follow. Where
one's origins have a psychological effect on the
person. Different cultures have an effect on the
people's behaviors, cognition and what they
believe is normal.
• Culture is the idea, social behavior and social
norms of a group of people influenced by the
environment they live in.
4. REAL LIFE
EXAMPLE
• Social norms differ from
one culture to another. For
example, in western
culture, it's a norm for men
and women to work and
study in the same place.
Whereas in some Arab - or
muslim - countries for
example Saudi Arabia,
women and men have
separate workplaces and
schools.
6. CASE STUDY #1
• The first case study was experimented by Ketay S et al in year 2009. This
experiment or study was based on culture and attention using evidence from
the brain and the behavior. This research demonstrates one's experiences as
well as the culture that the person was raised in, how it affected them, and how
they choose to perceive the world that surrounds them.
• Some action and behavioral studies have proved that the people that are raised
in the western cultures such as: Canada, Chile, Brazil, Argentine, Colombia,
and in Costa Rica, lean towards analytic processing and they prefer tasks that
emphasize independent contexts. Meanwhile, in East Asian cultures, individuals
prefer tasks emphasizing interdependent contexts.
• Cognitive neuroscientists have extended some behavioral researches, datas or
findings to examine the brain activity of people that come from different cultures
during the performance of cognitive tasks. The results of these studies indicate
that culture may be the reason of shaping the processing of the brain and may
influence the features of the environment that the individuals attended.
7. C A S E S T U D Y # 2
• 'War of Ghosts' study by Bartlett (1932), was an experimental study to
investigate how cultural background would lead to manipulation of
memory when the story was retold.
• The participants( British) were told a Native American legend called
"The War of the Ghosts". This story was filled with names and
concepts that was foreign to them. One group was asked to hear the
story and retell it, and the second group was asked to use serial
reproduction, where they had to recall the story and retell it.
• The results show that both groups changed the words of the story so
that it can fit their understanding and cultural norms. As this
experiment was culturally limited, it would be better to have
participants from different cultures to furthermore understand how
culture affects cognition.
8. S A M P L E R E F L E C T I O N :
• This project was done merely based on
research and case studies. We've
encountered no difficulty doing this project
as it was a topic we are familiar with.
Learning with a group helps you share
your ideas with your classmates and
exposes you to new information and points
of views.
