2. Structure & Function
• Structure: mode of building,
construction, or organization;
arrangement of parts, elements, or
constituents: a pyramidal structure.
• Function: the kind of action or activity
proper to a person, thing, or institution;
the purpose for which something is
designed or exists; role.
3. Life Characteristics
• Living things exhibit a far higher level of
organization than the nonliving world around
them. Molecules combine to form organelles.
• The living characteristics of a us are that we
can function by ourselves at a higher level of
thinking because of the complex structure we
are made of.
4. Human Organization
• The body can be considered conceptually at
seven structural levels: chemical (atom,
molecule, macromolecule), organelle, cell,
tissue, organ, organ system, and complete
organism
• There are seven “levels” that we are made of
and all of these levels make us our complex
structure.
5. Homeostasis
• the tendency of a system, especially the
physiological system of higher animals, to
maintain internal stability, owing to the
coordinated response of its parts to any
situation or stimulus that would tend to
disturb its normal condition or function
• Homeostasis is the body being “one” with its
self.. Also the body being in balance
6. Anatomical Planes
• The planes that a body is divided
into different sections.
• Our bodies are divided into
planes so that medical doctors
and any other field in that
nature.
7. Directional Terms
• Terms used to describe sections of the human body such as:
• Anterior: In front of, front
• Posterior: After, behind, following, toward the rear
• Distal: Away from, farther from the origin
• Proximal: Near, closer to the origin Dorsal: Near the upper
surface, toward the back
• Ventral: Toward the bottom, toward the belly
• Superior: Above, over Inferior: Below, under
• Lateral: Toward the side, away from the mid-line
• Medial: Toward the mid-line, middle, away from the side
• Rostral: Toward the front Caudal: Toward the back, toward the
tail
8. Organization of the Human Body
Cell is the basic living unit of the human body.
There are 4 types of cells.
1. Epithelial. Cover the surface of the body
2. Muscle- capable of contraction, form bodys muscles
3. Nerve- conduct electrical impulses, construct the
nervous system
4. Connective-binds together various body structures.
Nine systems
1.integumentary-skin
2.musculoskeletal-composed of muscles and skeleton
3.respritory- brings oxygen into the body
4.circulatory- takes oxygen to all cells
5.digestive- takes nutrients from food
6.excretory- takes waste from the body
7.nervous- gives signals from the brain to cells
8.endocrine-sends adrenaline and other hormones to
body
9.reprouctive-responsible for reproduction and male and
female sex organs
