2. From activists to ‘reflectivists’
Duncan Green in his book How Change Happens
calls for reflection
in order to deal with complex systems
and constant and emerging change
3.
4. Complex systems…
Campaigning is often about intervening in complex
systems
And…
Each of us is part of complex systems - our teams,
organisations, sectors, profession, region etc.
And…
Each of us internally is a complex system of history,
family, culture, language, personality, beliefs etc.
7. What we bring to work
our intellect
experience, education
and…
our attitudes and social skills,
empathy
adaptability
sense of humour
etc.
8. …we also bring…
Awareness of power dynamics
Needs for belonging, recognition, status
Prejudices
Unconscious biases
Feelings of competition and envy
9. How are you supported in:
• expressing and developing your personal skills
for work?
• acknowledging and dealing with your less
positive attitudes?
10. Reflective Practice
• Provides a space for bringing more awareness
of ourselves into work
• Acknowledges emotional and mental states
(does not necessarily try to resolve them)
• Brings awareness to personal dynamics that
affect work
• There was once a Board of Trustees…
11. Group work and process
For best results…
• Reflect with a group, ideally six to ten people
• Find ways of incorporating reflection into
existing work practice/meetings
• When there are ‘no feelings’, check in with the
body
• Be agile, catch issues early, deal with them
promptly
12. Reflective Gains
• Acknowledging feelings transforms interaction
• Opening a supported space enables difficult
conversations
• Learning from failure actually happens
• Motivation to get things done improves
= you will collectively improve your outcomes
13. How to apply reflective practice?
• Make time to check in
• Include feelings in evaluations
• Trust that time you give to communication and
process will improve your ability to get
excellent work done
• Sign up for an OS session tomorrow on
reflective practice and play with some more
tips and tricks!

How to fit it in?
What’s the compelling case for RP?
Inter-related levels
How can reflection be practised? At all levels, of course. Not the bigger systems we try to change; not the internal systems that only we can attend do – only I can do exercise with my body, only I can get emotional support or counselling if I need it – however, I am focusing our attention to how the systems at work
Gibbs G (1988) Learning by Doing: A guide to teaching and learning methods. Further Education Unit. Oxford Polytechnic: Oxford. Kolb’s Learning
We have become accustomed to the high level of demand on our personal resources that work imposes.
Campaigners do not need to provide emotional labour of the kind a nursery school teacher or counsellor has to, but it’s not enough to just ‘think’.
Campaigners tend to do things ‘they believe in’, which means you bring a lot more of yourself to work than just turning up and doing as you’re told
Chances are you have a lot invested in what you do
How all the above and more affect our own mental states and emotional well-being, except when it becomes horrible and salient, bullying, abuse, discrimination
Usually denial…
There was once a board of trustees…from suspicion to trust
Does not need to mean large chunks of time set aside for: feelings and failings
Can become part of normal work processes and make them much more effective
