The Wakefield Park North Stream Restoration project was substantially completed within budget and ahead of
schedule on October 6, 2016. The project restored approximately 900 linear feet of an unnamed tributary to
Accotink Creek using natural channel design techniques.
Project Overview:
• Establish new and stable channel geometry and plan form
• Reconnect the channel with its floodplain by raising the stream bed
• Place reinforced bed mix material to stabilize the stream bed and banks
• Repair a deteriorating outfall and replace a failing Cross County Trail and utility access culvert crossing
• Reduce erosion using in-stream grade control structures including: imbricated stone toe protection, plunge and
step pools, log and rock sills, and several cross vanes
• Create overbank wetland areas and install surface and buried woody debris to support habitat improvement
• The project reduces total phosphorus by 154 pounds per year; reduces total nitrogen by 505 pounds per year;
and removes 27 tons of sediment per year from this tributary leading to Accotink Creek
