Technology and Early Childhood Education
Assignment
NAME: CHAN FAI HUNG
CLASS: A
Is it suitable for young children to use computer technology in the pre-school stage?
Should technology be incorporated into kindergarten curriculum and teaching, and
when should technology be incorporated into kindergarten? There have been many
controversies over this issue from all walks of life. There are also different views and
practices on early childhood education: some kindergartens attract parents with novel
scientific and technological equipment, and kindergartens have less chance of using
science and technology in kindergartens because of their teaching philosophy. Some
kindergartens adopt centralized computer-based teaching, there are also
kindergartens where computers are placed in classrooms, integrating science and
technology into curriculum and teaching, and adopting integrated teaching (林葙葙,
2013). So, what benefit and potential risk of using ICT in Early Childhood Education?
There is some benefit of using ICT. First, it can arouse the active learning motivation of
children. Most of the kindergartens used paper-based teaching as the teaching
medium used in the traditional kindergartens and classrooms. Most of the teaching
media adopted by kindergartens are static, lacking in fun and gameplay. It is difficult
to practice the child-centered teaching mode. However, many people pointed out that
the game can help children to understand the world. They explore possible
experiences during the game and learn during the exploration (曾韻如、黃奕誠等,
2012). In fact, the multimedia features included in the tablet create new types of
interactive learning experience, and instantly download hundreds of interesting and
meaningful applications or software’s by connecting to the online software store, and
use the game as a medium to enhance children's learning motivation and satisfaction,
so that teaching can be as vivid, livelyand fun as the game, soas to achieve the desired
learning objectives. Through the integration of tablet technology, teachers can help
children learn internalization through hands-on experience and operation through
activities such as Chinese, mathematics and painting (Shifflet & Toledo, 2012).
Second, it increases teaching flexibility. According to NAEYC and ISTE, if preschool
teachers actively look for a suitable way to integrate science and technology into
teaching, the development of children's mathematical logic, social emotion, language
and other aspects will be greatly aided by the improvement of young children's
creativity. However, the flexible application of advanced technologies and tools will be
more necessary for children to grow up in the future. Kindergarten teachers who can
properly use tablet to integrate teaching, the lightweight features make the classroom
not limited to a fixed time, space and place, and are no longer isolated from the
computer room, increase teaching flexibility, teaching and learning between teachers
and students can be carried out anytime, anywhere, easy to integrate science and
technology in daily classroomactivities, so that learning more effective (鄭婉玲、胡
馨允、葉志禧, 2013).
While there also some disadvantage of using ICT. There is negative impact of using
electronic products on young Children's Mental Health. If child overuse of electronic
products is prone to negative emotions or personality, violent thoughts and internet
addiction. Children who were young and could not handle the frequency of their use
of using computer. When children become addicted, especially when they cannot
access the Internet, their minds continually think of things on the Internet, and even
get furious emotional reactions such as losing their temper, losing their emotions and
being very anxious.
Also, there alsonegativeimpact of using electronic products on children's social health.
Young children can be weakened by opportunities to interact with the community by
indulging in games that play electronic products. Children lack interest in things from
the outside world and neglect their communication with others, thus reducing
opportunities for developing social skills. In addition, if children play games involving
violence, young children maybe imitate violent and offensive behaviors, and they
would be indifferent to people, thus reducing their social expectations and possibly to
hurt themselves and others can affect young children's social skills in the long run
(Vivienne Leung, 2015).
There are pros and cons of using ICT in early childhood education. if we can use it
suitably, this will be a good tool of children.
There is an activity which involve ICT. We will mainly to use tablet in this activity. All
we know that the main feature of tablet great portability, which greatly increases the
chances of young children learning and operating actively. Children can use the tablet
to search for information on the Internet and use camera capabilities to record what's
happening in their surroundings, all over the world, which plays an important
supporting role in extending kindergarten curriculum content. So, we will use tablet to
help for our site visit. This is a K3 class, children will bring tablet to the wetland park
for visits. During the visit, teachers can arrange children to discuss activities anytime.
For example, when children are interested in an organism. Teachers can immediately
help young children find information at the internet. It let children can keep interested
and motivated to learn everything about their surroundings, the tablet serves as a
platform to meet the children's curiosity and willingness to explore. Children areactive
participants in learning. In this moment, tablet become a resource library for young
children. Tabletcan be scaffolding children, this can meet the curiosity of children. The
role of teacher is transformed from a information provider into a supporter of the
learning process. The role of a child from a passive recipient to an active information
recipient, they canbe found related information about animal in the wetland park Web
pages. In addition, young children can also can operate the tablet to randomly record
photos, videos or audio recordings during the exploration process. In this case, the
tablet can be an information technology tool to help young children build their
knowledge. The information collected by children can help teachers understand the
perspective of children in observing the world. In real world, the perspectives
observed by children have their own interests, hobbies and unique discoveries. We
will have a sharing at the end. We can find out what children interest in, may be some
children like animals in wetland parks, some children like to record different kinds of
plants. Sharing part provide more opportunities for cooperation and share their
experiences with each other.
