1. The Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) Programme
CAS stands for:
Creativity Creative activities, including the arts, and creative thinking in carrying out projects.
Action This includes sports and other physical activities outside the normal curriculum.
Service Doing things for others and with others, in a relationship of mutual respect.
Students complete a minimum of 150 hours, with a reasonable balance between Creativity, Action and
Service. This means roughly three hours per week, showing an 18-month commitment to CAS.
Although some CAS activities may be initiated by the school, all students should initiate CAS activities. An
activity is good CAS if there is someone to supervise the activity, if it develops new skills, if the student has
planned or initiated the activity, if they are able to work collaboratively with others, and/or if it engages with
issues of global importance. If students don’t reflect on it, it’s not CAS.
Students have three formal CAS interviews during their diploma. They also need to keep a CAS diary
which should include photographs and ‘reflections’ written before starting, and after completion of the
activity.
