1. International Mindedness
Students centred in their own culture
“…the honesty of the IBO stems from the fact that we require all students to
relate first to their own national identity—their own language, history and
cultural heritage, no matter where in the world this may be.” Roger Peel,
former director general of the IBO
All IB programmes require the study of at least two languages. Language
teaching involves more than the teaching grammar and vocabulary, it is a way
to scaffold learners’ understanding, respect and appreciation of other cultures,
as well as encouraging students to appreciate their own language and culture.
The majority of teaching is in English, but mother-tongue development is
important for all learners. We encourage our parents and students to speak in
their mother tongue at home. Research shows that this strengthens their child’s
language skills and gives them a strong sense of cultural identity.

*In the Diploma programme, students are able to study literaturein other mother tongues
through school-supported self-study.
In the MYP, Art, PE and Music will be taught in Azerbaijani. This will make it
easier for us to create links with the community, participate in workshops,
performances and competitive sports. All students will be involved in service
with the local community. We already have a link with a local orphanage, but
will be exploring the possibility of other links.
Global contexts
Global contexts provide shared starting points for inquiry into what it means to
be internationally-minded, framing a curriculum that promotes multilingualism,
intercultural understanding and global engagement.
All IB programmes make explicit references to global contexts
We will focus on global issues through whole school celebrations; the
Festival of Light day and the International Week
We are setting up a link with the United Nations in Baku, through
which we hope that our students will be able participate as volunteers
in local projects, take part in Model United Nations, and act as UN
ambassadors.
We will tap into the IB global network to access global resources and
global conversations. For MYP and DP,
Monthly whole-school assemblies will not only provide an opportunity
for students to showcase their work, but help to place our work in a
global context, enabling students to think globally while acting locally.
