1. Group One: Literature
Literature courses are designed for students who have experience of using the course language in
an academic context. All students are encouraged to study the literature of their mother tongue. At
Lyceum-School 6 students may choose to study Azerbaijani, Russian or English literature. Students
with a different mother tongue may still study this through school-supported self-study.
All courses include the study of literature in translation from other cultures. This encourages
students to reflect on their own cultural assumptions, promoting understanding of the different ways
in which cultures influence and shape our lives.
The course is divided into four parts:
Part 1: Works in translation (Two works at SL, three at HL)
A literary study of works in translation. Students learn to appreciate the different perspectives of
people from other cultures and to consider the role that culture plays in making sense of literary
works.
Part 2: Detailed study (Two works at SL, three at HL)
This part of the syllabus focuses on the skills of close reading and textual analysis. Students not
only form and learn to articulate personal responses to the works they study, but become familiar
with a variety of interpretations and critical perspectives.
Part 3: Study of a literary genre (Three works at SL, four at HL)
The grouping of works by genre provides a framework for the comparative study of the selected
works. Students explore the literary conventions and features associated with that genre.
Part 4: Options (Three works at SL and HL)
Students study one of three options: The study of prose other than fiction, which may include travel
writing, autobiography, letters, essays, speeches; the study of rapidly evolving text forms such as
graphic novels, hypertext narratives or fan fiction or Literature and film.
