1. Figure 1. (A) Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) has seven distinct serotypes named O, A, C,
Asia1, and Southern African Territories 1 to 3. Each serotype is divided into several topotypes and
lineages by genetic characterization. (B) FMDV have been circulating in Southeast Asia such as
Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand for a long time, and viral genetic substitutions would be
accumulated by selection pressure of transmission across hosts and immunity induced by infection
or vaccination. It is important to collect and analyze the same genotype virus that has already
occurred in Southeast Asia in order to cope with FMD in Korea in the near future.

Conclusion
The APQA ELISA kit had better sensitivity and specificity than Pirbright ELISA kit. Besides, the
APQA ELISA kit is quick and simple by saving approximately 2hrs, being compared with the
Pirbright ELISA kit. Conclusively, the APQA ELISA kit are expected to make a significant
contribution to control and prevention of FMD in POOL 1 region.
ResultsIntroduction
Foot-and-Mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease in the cloven-hoofed animals
such as pig and cattle. FMDV has been highly prevalent in most of Southeast Asia countries
including Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia of POOL 1 region, which Republic of Korea
belongs to. As FMD outbreaks caused by FMDV virus serotype O and A occurred throughout
POOL1 region, it is important to identify serotypes from the outbreaks for better efficiency in
further characterization of FMDV and prompt control measures in action. In this study, FMDVs
were isolated from clinical samples of FMD outbreaks in 2015-2019 of Vietnam (n=9), Laos (n=12),
Myanmar (n=1), and Cambodia (n=30) through the international collaborative research projects
and subjected to performance comparison between OIE reference ELISA kit (Pirbright kit) and
APQA ELISA kit newly developed from our laboratory.

In most O type FMDV samples, APQAAg ELISA showed better sensitivity than Pirbright Ag
ELISA. In the case of A type FMDV sample, APQA was better in Laos(F), but Pirbright, which
has two Mab strips, showed higher sensitivity in the second Mab strip in Cambodia samples(B).
Meanwhile, non-specific A strip(B) in Pirbright ELISA were observed positive for O type samples.
