Buzz-session: What is an ecological footprint?

•Have you heard of this concept before?

•How is it tied to sustainable development?

•How it is related to humans? To the
environment?
•Do you & your neighbour next to you have an
ecological footprint?

                                                 5
Ecological Footprints: the facts

• Indicator that measures how us humans influences the
  environment
• By showing how large land and sea areal that is required for what
we consume and produce. Also, in order to take care of the waste
  that we leave after us.
• The footprint is an indicator that can apply to a person, a city, a
  country and/or the whole world.

                                                                    6
Ecological Footprints: the human strains

• Food – meat, plants, grown crops
• Clothes, cosmetics, jewelery, “stuff”
• Travelling – roads and transports
• Housing – heating, appliances, furniture
• Cities – buildings, roads, industries
• The energy we use

                                               7
Ecological Footprints – a global perspective

If everyone lived as the average…

...Swede, we would need 3 planets
...Indian, we would need half a planet
…American, we would need more than 5 planets

                                                8
Total ecological footprint for the whole of humanity

             Bildreferens: http://www.sp.se/sv/index/services/environment/sidor/default.aspx

                                                                                               9
Consequences for our climate:
• The earth’s biodiversity is threatened
• Extreme weather will become more frequent
• Shortage of water and draught of large areas
• Flooding
• Rise of sea level (1-1,6 m this century)
• Threat for coral reafes

                                                  10
Consequences for humanity – ongoing climate
                   injustice

•Climate justice vs. climate injustice
•Poor/marginalized people have smaller ecological footprints than richer
people
•This group of people are the ones usually influenced in a negative way by
climate changes that are a consequence of our big ecological footprints

                                                                             11
4 corners exercise – let’s get moving!
Question 1: What are the gravest consequences of our
consumtion and production have for the environment and
   our climate?

Question 2: Who bares the most responsibility to balance the
injustice that exists today for both humans and the
   environment?

Question 3: What would environmental justice be? (Everyone with
equal sized footsteps that fits one earth)
Question 4: Now that we’ve clarified what eco-footprints are –
what do you want to do with yours? (increase, decrease, keep
    stable, non of the three?

                                                                  12
Homework: write your own environmental vow
