Essay on Generation Gap
Essay on Generation Gap
How many times have you felt that your parents don't understand you, that they have no respect for
you as an individual? How often do you shake your head in frustration and blame it on the
'generation gap'? Parents! They are like aliens from another planet altogether! You and they are in
different camps; strangers forced to live under the same roof Right? Wrong! There is a way of
bridging what appears to be a yawning chasm. If you genuinely want to improve your relationship
with your parents (and give them a big shock in the bargain!) try listening to them, treating them just
like you would listen to a valued friend. Instead of always whining, 'You don't understand me", stop
and think. Do we ever try and understand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Generation gap means difference in attitude, or lack of understanding between younger and older
generation. This generation gap has always been there but these days it has reached to an explosive
stage. The values and patterns of life have changed to a great extent. Today, everybody likes to live
and behave in his own way. This attitude has widened the generation gap, which can never be filled.
It is now destroying family life completely. The elders look after the children and make all sorts of
sacrifices to bring them up. Naturally, they feel they have a right over them. They want their
children to follow their instructions as they have certain expectations from them. But the children,
when they grow up, want a complete freedom in their thoughts and actions and unfortunately their
thoughts and actions are just opposite to those expected by the elders. They revolt when any kind of
restrictions are imposed on them. Consequently, the family breaks up and everything gets ruined.
In India, we are yet in the initial stages, but the gap has appeared and it is going to grow bigger day
by day. So it is not only the responsibility of the younger but also of the elders to fill this gap with
their love, affection and trust. The

The Future Of The Millennial Generation
My Grandma used to tell me that every penny saved is a penny earned, but what she
didn't mention was how hard it is to actually save that money in this time period where money is
just some set of digits on a screen. The millennial generation is in more of a financial crunch
now than any other generation has ever been in and it's looking like its getting worse. You can
call them narcissistic, materialistic, and entitled, but millennials are set on the hunt on achieving
financial goals. They are trying to keep up with their friends with the latest technology that
booms something new every day. They are trying to get by financially with their current
situations and trying to live their daily lives. Some are paying off their education, ... Show more

Millennials who are in student debt will make more than half a million compared
to high school graduates. (Dunlop para 2). I believe that this shows to some extent that they are
financially responsible to use it for something that will benefit in the long run; they are in debt
because they have to be to" make it" with the costly expenses and in the future if they increase.
More Job opportunities are out there, but they are looking for more experience and education in
the desired work or field.
While student loans rank the highest debt on the list, credit card debt is another form of
debt that has millennials tearing up their credit cards. Technology through communication for
example, has been a beneficial thing to many to stay in contact with friends and family members
in a more efficient and fast way than ever before. When one form of technology booms brand
new, then a newer one will over rule it the next day. Millennials are being targeted to the latest
technology and gadgets and our friends are influencing, comparing, and telling them what they
need next. Deanna White, a journal author writes on millennials financial habits says three
quarters of young adults use their friends ' financial habits to determine their own.. She also

Managing Multi Generation Workforce
MANAGING MULTI–GENERATION WORKFORCE – A NEW CHALLENGE IN I.T.

ABSTRACT:
Today is the time which can be marked when we can see four generation rubbing their shoulders
more or less happily under the same roof of an organisation. Though these generations show drastic
variations in terms of their values, commitments, motivational factors, dissatisfiers, work
environment, approach towards job etc., yet every generation has got some exceptional benefits for
the organisation. Organisation cannot afford to value any of them less than the others. Talking about
IT industry, we can hardly see anyone from the oldest generation who are called as the
Traditionalists. As the IT sector has reached its forties you can find atleast three generations Baby–
Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y joining hands for the success of the organisation.
Easier said than done, managing these three generation has given a tough time to the top managers.
The industries have seen their employees below 25 years of age growing into more matured
workforce and their changed focus have forced the Human Resource Managers to change their basic
policies, which were initially made for care free employees recruited freshly from the campus. This
situation has not only posed a challenge in terms of managing the differences but also making them
work under same policy framework. This research work helps in

Beauty ( Re ) Discovers The Male Body, By Susan Bordo
In her essay "Beauty (Re)discovers the Male Body," Susan Bordo manages to recognize an
underlying fundamental change in society's attitude towards advertisements and specifically sees
that unfold in the growing shift towards male sexually oriented advertisements with a focus on
feministic qualities. Furthermore, since Bordo wrote this essay in the 1990s, the advancements in
technology have caused growing ideological differences between generations as their responses to
things like social media and advertisements elicit contrasting reactions. The Millennials, also known
as Generation Y, have been born into the various outlets of social media and have become
accustomed to a greater sense of comfort with the Internet as they share all of their life stories and
photos with other human beings. On the other hand, Generation X and the Baby Boomers were born
into an era that didn't depend on technology to perform everyday tasks. As a result, their mindsets
make them reluctant to the changes in technology, which inadvertently makes them more
uncomfortable to any massive changes in social media. By using sexually oriented advertisements,
Kraft Foods and Axe, effectively display differing ideological differences between Generation X and
Generation Y. In conjunction, Bordo's elements of the gaze, objectification, and the rocks and
leaners pose allow us to better understand the construction of the advertisements and the role they
play on influencing each targeted generation.

Analyzing The Many Facets We Face
The purpose of this commentary paper is to explain and describe the many facets we face in our
working day. I work for a company that makes aftermarket parts for mining dragline shovels,
extensive cutting spades, parts for railroad rail cars, undercarriages for TRAC type equipment, and
the notorious NASA Space Shuttle program in which we built the shuttle crawler which transported
the Space Shuttle to the launch pad. Our environment is very dynamic and spans across different
cultures and countries.
Have you ever thought about how companies maintain a working relationship with other countries
working in the same line of business? Let me tell you, that we are not all that different, as we share
rather the same goals and results. A working environment that is motivated by the mining industry is
both dynamic and exciting. Our company is based out of Gillette, Wyoming and has a population of
29,000 people. The resources and availability factors skilled labor and education in the mining
industry with a communication infrastructure. The mining industry follows a code of law which is
strongly influenced by OSHA's rules and regulations, which sometimes are policed by political
processes. Today, many companies if not most, are driven by digital access. We rely on connectivity
to ensure a strong infrastructure, keeping connectivity reliable and consistent supporting a precise
manufacturing process. Our company has a global presence in Chile, India, Mexico, Canada, as well

Generational Diversity At The Workplace Essay
Generational Diversity at the Workplace In her article "The Tethered Generation," in Society of
Human Resources Magazine, writer Kathryn Tyler asserts that people born between 1978 and 1999,
also known as the Millennial Generation, would bring challenges to the workplace, attributing early
access to technology and a "perpetual connection to parents" as causes. The article's central tenet is
that through technology, this generation's "tethered" relationship with peers and parents has shaped
communication, decision making, and need for connectivity. Tyler identifies the following
Millennial traits as challenges to organizations: "unrealistic expectations with respect to goal–setting
and planning;" "only adequate professionalism and work ethic, creativity and innovation, and
critical thinking and problem solving;" and lack of autonomy and "sense of self–reliance." The
article ends by recommending that human resource management prepare for the Millennial's "high
maintenance" and their parent's "helicoptering" with policies and training programs (Tyler, 2007).
This is a well written–article that uses as supporting evidence neuroscience researching findings,
anecdotes, quotations from authoritative figures, and survey statistics from HR managers. If I were a
manager of the Baby Boomer or Gen X generation, Tyler's recommendations might alleviate anxiety
about the inevitability of navigating the generational gap with younger employees. As a creative

Fragile X Disease Essay
Fragile X is a disease which severely influences the everyday lives of those affected by it. It is a
disease which unfortunately limits an individual in several respects. Physical symptoms include an
elongated face with larger than normal ears and feet. Additionally, the individual will have a difficult
time interacting with others due to shyness and trouble with processing faces, thus encountering
behavioral road blocks. Most importantly, the individual may have intellectual disabilities such as
difficulty with memory, all a result of having Fragile X. Fragile X is the most common single gene
which leads to autism and other intellectual disabilities. Fragile X is transmitted through DNA.
Within the DNA, it has been found that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As previously stated, those with more than 30 repeated trinucleotides of CGG are likely to develop
some form of Fragile X (often referred to as premutation), with those having over 200 repeats
having the full syndrome (also known as a full mutation). All of the repeated trinucleotides are
located within the promotor region of the FMR1 gene. The reason the FMR1 gene produces so little
FMRP is due to a process called methylation. "Methylation is a process which inactivates a gene,
and the larger number of repeats inactivates the gene. When the gene is inactivated, the cell may
make little or none of the needed FMRP." (NICHD 2009). Figure 2: Normal promoter region VS.
Elongated promoter region (NICHD 2009) Intriguingly enough, in certain cases, despite having
200+ CGG trinucleotide repeats within a FMR1 gene, it is still possible to be able to produce FMRP.
One way this can be performed is by being born female. Males are born with an X and Y
chromosome. Females however, are born with two X chromosomes. A female with Fragile X in one
chromosome may not necessarily have Fragile X within the other chromosome. Within the female,
certain cells may choose to activate one of the X chromosomes, and other cells may choose to
activate the other X chromosome. Hence, even though there exists a Fragile X chromosome, not all
cells within the body will use it, thus the production of FMRP is possible using the other normal X
chromosome.

The various gaps would also have a huge impact on a particular workplace depending on the
modernity of the year. Although the generations by definition are somewhat different, the Baby
Boomers generation includes people born from 1961 to 1976 (Glass 2007). Because Generation X is
so much smaller than the Baby Boomer generation there is predicted to be a labor shortage within
the next fifteen years. The oldest members of the Baby Boomer Generation are beginning to retire
and Generation X is not large enough to replace them. This leads to shortage in the supply of highly
trained employees which put the employers of offering better benefit than another company. Hence
the employees took advantage of this position to job hop from one position to another or even worse
from one place to another when they find a better benefit (eg : higher salary, higher medical benefit
and even more leaves). Because of this unhealthy habit, the Human Resouce has come up with one
HR policy as employee retention. The working environment in the modern century are much
different than the olden days. The Baby – Boomers generation, similar to their grandparents days are
more likely to be conservatives. They are likely to be believe and trust that the organisation would
take care of them. Most likely we see these type of people work in the government sectors where
they devote their whole life to the organization and even retire with the same organizations. On the

What We Eat As Humans?
If you were to ask any average American, most would not realize the importance of their culture's
food and how distinct it makes them from others in the world. What we eat as humans can
drastically affect how we view the world as well as the country we live in. As countries develop and
become more advanced politically, traditional cultural aspects including food and cuisine can be lost
over time. Traditionally, older dishes that were cooked and prepared in a country's past may lose its
significance over time and eventually lose its cultural importance. In the country of Vietnam, there
have been many hardships and issues only a half century ago that the country has had to deal with as
a whole. Political unrest during times of struggle made it difficult for Vietnam to develop culturally
and build on their food and cuisine. However, as I found out during my research and interview,
Vietnamese (especially younger adults in Vietnam) have made a conscious effort to return these
traditional dishes in their dishes of choice, regain a sense of nationalism that has brought the country
into a more secure and developed society. On a cold November Sunday, I began interviewing my
former roommate James about Vietnamese Cuisine and its affect culture. Initially I was not sure
what to ask him, he had been born in Vietnam in the late 90's but since being adopted, he was forced
to move from his home country to America. James has been able to visit Vietnam a handful of times

Accordingly, occasionally known as the "Forgotten generation of all of the four generations,"
Generation X continues to redefined that similar to the prior generations, Generation X has made
and continues to make historic strives on society as well. First, Generation Xers redefined how
pursing a higher education and focusing on establishing a career, demonstrated to previous
generations that the terms of marriage and starting a family can be "Put on hold, for now." To
paraphrase, Johnson and Johnson (2010) note that in 1985, half of the college students attendees
were women of Generation X (p. 64). What is more, as these women attended college, the marriage
in America declined to forty–seven percent between the 1940s to the mid–1970s (Johnson and
Johnson, 2010, p. 64). Moreover, Generation Xers in the workplace embraced creating a work and
life balance, demonstrating independence in the workplace; expecting the workplace to be an
engaging experience. On the other hand, Generation X has faced an overwhelmed fault of negative
stereotypes of Generation X has overwhelmingly portrayed the generation has redefined stereotypes

Declining Student Resilience : A Serious Problem For...
In the article, "Declining Student Resilience: A Serious Problem for Colleges", Peter Gray states,
"There has been an increase in diagnosable mental health problems, but there has also been a
decrease in the ability of many young people to manage the everyday bumps in the road of life". It
has come up a lot that millennials do not have Grit, unlike other generations. Millennials come off as
lazy or immature in society today. Millennials always have a reminder from their parents or
grandparents saying, "back in my day...." or "you're lucky, you have it easy". Other generations tend
to give millennials a harder time on how they are performing in a school setting. Some generations
believe that millennials are babied by their parents. Everyone has their own opinions about other
generations. There are many similarities and differences between millennials and other generations
on how they perform in schools. Some examples on how they are different and similar are work
ethic, pressure, and technology. These examples come from actual opinions from millennials and
other generations on their perspectives when comparing millennials and other generations in a
school setting. Work ethic is a big factor on how well you will do in school, and how high your
grades will be. Work ethic is about fifty–fifty with results from the survey. About half of people said
work ethic for millennials is higher than what it used to be compared to other generations. For
example, my survey answer from my

Comparison Of Koh Tao
The underwater world surrounding of Koh Tao has a diverse array of marine life and corals, making
it a fantastic destination to snorkel. Located in Thailand, Koh Tao is an island that offers many
snorkeling sites to explore the unique underwater world.
Primetime for Snorkeling Koh Tao
You can visit Koh Tao anytime of the year, which is part of the reason it is a top–notch snorkeling
destination. The dry season stretches from November to April, which might be the best time to visit.
During this time temperatures range from 29°C to 34°C (84–94°F), and there is little rainfall. Year
round, Thailand boasts picturesque scenery, beautiful weather, and a unique underwater world
waiting to be explored!
Sites for Snorkeling Koh Tao

which makes it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similar to some of the other sites, the middle of the bay is sandy with little marine life, so the best
snorkeling is along the rocky edges. The road to Mango Bay is not exactly safe, so you may want to
hire a long tail boat or rent a kayak to reach the area. Mango Bay is a great snorkeling site because it
has huge schools of fish, which can actually be seen from the surface. You will generally find this
throng of fish by the Mango Bay resort.
Getting to Koh Tao
This island can be a bit more difficult to reach than others in Thailand. The fastest way to get there
would be to fly into Koh Samui and then take the ferry to Koh Tao. This is also the most expensive
method, but it will get you there quickest.
Whichever way you choose to travel to Koh Tao, the underwater world awaits! Take in views of
magical sea creatures and stunning scenery while you snorkel Koh Tao. This is a great area to see
exotic fish, sea turtles, octopus and most definitely sharks! You can also see a variety of corals, such
as Brain, Whip, Table and Staghorn corals, along with many types of soft

focusing on the generational differences between the generations now and previous generations. The
authors explain that they think that the graduates today are as technologically advanced as they
should be. They believe the answer is "adult learning theory" and they would try to use this method
to avoid using technology. Berge and Feiertag also state that this generation is so dependent on
technology that without it, we would be lost. Generation N is narrowly focused on the United States,

It is important to enhance our understanding in adulthood learning because not everyone was born
into the digital universe. Also, the authors talk about learning in the classrooms being relatively
different than it was before, some teachers don't use the classroom at all and lecture online. Article
also points around the Internet as a whole being some sort of teacher, Google for example. Google
spits out about any kind of information that you may need. These authors also go on to state that
older generations aren't really that worried about the advance in technology and that they are more
focused on the news and literature than the "internet boom". But that the televisions are aiming
towards trying to get their viewers more involved in the internet. I don't think that classrooms will
become completely technology dependent and I feel like that is what the authors are trying to hint at.
I do think that our generation has become dependent on technology but I disagree that everyone has
to learn it. I think that it is important that adults learn this new way of "living" in a sense, but I do
not believe that it should be a necessity. The authors also say that society as a whole is turning into
technology, I disagree. Although technology has become almost the basis of everything (the reading
mentioned banks), there is still the "old–school" way of doing things and there are some

Introduction
A generation can be defined as the period, cohort or age of a group of people. Age is seen as the age
that the persons were when particular transitions or events in life take place. Period can be defined
as the overall experience of a person's lifetime. Lastly, cohort can be seen as the overall grouping of
people who have shared events during their formative years that more than likely contribute to like–
minded behavior throughout the duration of their lives. There are currently four generations in
United States society: Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X and The Millennials. The
silent generation was born between the years of 1930 and 1945. Significant events during this time
period include but are not limited to World War II and the Great Depression. The baby boomer
generation was born between the years of 1946 and 1964. Significant events for this generation
include the substantial growth of the middle class as well as economic prosperity. Generation X is
born in the time period of 1965–1979, this generation was brought together by the big energy issue
as well as the Vietnam War. Lastly the final generation that is currently in the workforce are the
Millennials. This generation was born between the years 1980 and 2001, this group is brought

America 's Neglected Middle Child Essay
Growing up, most Millennials butt heads with their parents like every generation before us.
Although a vast majority of Millennials have generation X parents. Growing up as a Millennial,
technology became more advanced which seems to be the root of the disliking for us from every
generation before us. Our parents are "America 's neglected middle child" and we the Millennials
are the future of today. We excel with technology, but struggle with our income, causing us to push
back commitments other generations would have already done. Millennials want access not
ownership. A growing percent of us are putting off buying houses, marriage, children, and buying
cars. Being so technologically advanced we look for convenience over hard work, even in our
purchases, "57% of Millennials who compare prices in stores. (AIMIA Inc. "Born this Way: US

the factor of good quality and prices. "Millennials have come of age during a time of technological
change, globalization and economic disruption. That's given them a different set of behaviors and
experiences than their parents (© 2016 Goldman Sachs)." As I explore the differences and
similarities of our two generations I will be discussing power distance, uncertainty avoidance, in

The Age Discrimination And Employment Act Of 967 ( Adea )...
Employees over the age of 40 are protected under law from discrimination under the Age
Discrimination and Employment Act of 967 (ADEA). However, that does not change the beliefs of
some organizations that employees over the age of 40 are not as beneficial or productive as those
younger than the age of 40. Communication skills are important to any organization and employees
are expected to be professional and be able to express their ideas and opinions in that manner. Good
communication skills are not limited to one area, to be an effective communicator you must be a
good listener, be able to read body language as well as express your ideas verbally and in written
form. Employees older the age of 40, have not grown up with the technology that we have today and
have relied more on hand written, typed, face to face and verbal communication in a way much
different than today. Because staff members over the age of 40 have spent their careers in a more
formal work environment, the communication that they prefer tends to be more formal as well.
Social media a fairly new way of communication that has grown significantly over the past decade
and while can be a very beneficial way of communicating, it can also affect an employee negatively.
The tendency to post a status about a bad day or something that may have not been for public
release could harm the company or the employee's relationship with coworkers. Generations before

The Future Of The American Economy
The future of the American economy rests heavily on the millennial generation's shoulders. This
generation (ages 16–36) is America's next work force, politicians, CEOs, parents, soldiers, writers,
and teachers. But, does this generation possess the stamina, grit and patience upon which our
ancestors depended so greatly? The millennial generation's demand for instant gratification implies
that they are not capable of providing our nation with the stability it so desperately needs. Roberts
summarizes this sentiment by saying, "From top to bottom, we are becoming a society ruled by
impulse, by the reflexive reach for quick rewards. We are becoming an Impulse Society." Roberts
points out that our nations is being driven by desire, not need. This driving force is impacting even
the youngest of our population. In her Ted Talk in 2012, Economist Silvia Barcellos discusses the
results of an instant gratification test. The test involved giving young children each one
marshmallow. They are told that if they do not eat the marshmallow for 15 minutes they will receive
another; if they eat the original marshmallow before that time, they will not receive another. The
results showed that two out of every three children ate the marshmallow before the 15 minutes were
completed. The temptation to eat the marshmallow and experience immediate gratification was
simply too great. Silvia explains, "People tend to choose the things that give them instant pleasure
over long term benefits (TED TALK

The Marketing Industry and Generation X and Y
From X to Y: The Generation Gap, and its Effects
Introduction
Generation X, children born between 1965 and 1976, the first generation of children defined as
'latchkey' (oxford, marketing 4th edition). Living in an era of "dual–income" families, Gen X
children were often left alone, and thus developed a sense of independence, and resourcefulness.
Unlike Baby boomers, where equality was a core value, Gen X experienced more cultural diversity,
higher levels of education, with some even attaining college degrees. Gen X is also extremely
flexible, while they are loyal and committed to their jobs; if a better opportunity presents itself they
would grasp it in a heartbeat. Gen X is determined and enthusiastic about life, growing as
individuals, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Diversity is another major influencer of Millennials, with such a strong focus on creativity and
having a heterogeneous organization through diversity. Education levels are also at an all–time–high
with Millennials, with which comes the optimistic outlook most Millennials have on life. With many
Gen Y entering the work force now, the shift of the markets are moving to better be attuned to their
new masters attitudes, values, and beliefs, as the new face, voice, and shape of future generations.
The transition from generation X to Y like all previous transitions will impact the markets, and
revolutionize marketing strategies to be more attuned to today's generation and how they perceive
brand awareness, brand loyalty, the use of greener/ethical materials, innovativeness, and creativity.
Purchasing Behaviour
Generation X's purchasing behaviour is that of brand loyalty and indifference between premium
brands and non–premium brands. Generation X stay loyal to brands if the quality of the product is
consistent and if the price of the product remains relatively affordable. Generation X will stay loyal
if the product is affordable and of significant quality. Generation X is extremely cautious when
buying products, and researching a product is a must before any purchase decision is made. As such,
it is obvious that most Gen X are concerned more with informative advertising, visually appealing
adverts are less appealing to Gen X

The Tethered Generation By Kathryn Tyler
In her article "The Tethered Generation" for HR Magazine in May 2007, freelance writer Kathryn
Tyler asserts that due to the fact that millennials grew up with new technologies such as the cell
phone and internet, many of the skills they need to integrate into the workforce is severely lacking.
She goes on to support this argument by addressing millennial connectivity and helicopter parents.
With Tyler's background in human resources and training and her proclamation of being member of
generation X, Tyler shares her observation that millennials entering the workforce are tethered to
technology, which in turn effects their work, communication, and decision making skills in and out
of the office. By supplying the reader with information about these transgressions, Tyler builds her
claim that HR professionals should work harder to accommodate the millennials' shortcomings. She
appears to write in hopes of HR professionals understanding why Millennials have developed into
the people that they are in order to provide HR professionals with a better understanding of them
and to teach these professionals how to deal with their millennial employees. Tyler's explicit
argument, which effectively appeals to her audience's perception of millennials, is supported by an
appeal to ethos in which she employs statements from credible professionals to optimize her
argument. This strategy of opting to sparingly use her own voice in the text poses a unique method
of making her audience more

workforce diversity. Generation is important because the individuals are born within the same time
period, providing common views, and beliefs because of the common exposure at a young age
(Rajput, Bali, & Kesarwani, 2013). This paper will provide an overview of the four Generations
represented in the current workforce today, an overview of the generation that I belong to, and lastly,
an explanation of how one group can learn from another. Overview of Four Generations The four
generations presented in this paper are: The Veterans, The Baby Boomers, Generation X, and the
Millennias. The Veterans, also known as seniors or traditionalist, were born between 1925 and 1945
(Andrews & Boyle 2016). These individuals lived through the world wars, overcame economic
hardship, and have chosen to continue to work past the common retirement age. This group of
individuals believe they work out of

Public Image And Customer Management Strategies
Companies of all types and sizes depend on their customer base for revenues and continuously work
toward earning the largest market share percentage attainable. The foundations of businesses are its
customers, and unless that company is a monopoly, competition between businesses will drive
customers and revenues to one business or another. Unless it is properly managed, maintaining
customer relationships can be expensive. While some companies invest heavily in their public image
and customer management strategies, other companies succeed despite poor customer relationships.
The wishes of the customers are also continuously evolving with new generations and social
environments. Moving on from the "boomers", to the "gen x", and now the ... Show more content on

In his Ted talk "Millennials: Who They are & Why We Hate Them", Scott Hess discusses a number
of companies, including Abercrombie and Fitch as a company that endorsed the typically "cliquish"
and judgmental characteristics associated with the "gen x". That is not surprising considering that
the company restructured in 1979 as a modern sportswear outlet (Lepore, 2011). Meanwhile,
American Eagle is seen as marketing "for everyone", looking to attract the inclusive and tolerant
characteristics of the Millennials (Hess, 2011). Perhaps even more importantly is the increasing
demand for value for the customer in a meaningful way. In its customer priority list, in addition to
personal customer values, Inc includes "value that's superior to other options" (James, 2013).
Another way of looking at this particular value is in terms of global influence and impact, as well as
connectedness; people want to have a positive influence on the world. As Hess remarks, one of
Starbucks' campaigns was to invest in their coffee farmers and suppliers (Hess, 2011). The impact
on the consumer is the feeling that purchasing coffee at Starbucks is beneficial to other
communities. Similarly, the so–called "fast–casual" bakery style restaurant Pret a Manger is known
not only for its fresh sandwiches and soups but also for its initiative to donate any leftover edibles to
charity on a

Choosing A Vietnamese Restaurant Known As Pho House
For my project, I decided to choose a Vietnamese Restaurant known as Pho House that had a wide
variety of traditional "Phở" or noodle soup that is unique to Vietnam. It is a small chain style
restaurant that popular location for Vietnamese style food. As soon as I entered the restaurant, I
immediately noticed various aspects of Vietnamese and Southeast Asian culture. For instance, the
architecture of the restaurant involved thick wooden pillars, a wooden ceiling, a smooth wooden
floor, and ornaments around the periphery of the restaurant. Also, I noticed various paintings that
depicted some familiar aspects of Vietnam such as a painting of a traditional village high up in the
mountains and a painting of an instructor who was teaching a ... Show more content on

This instance is a unique demonstration of one of the many aspects of Confucianism: collectivism.
Through collectivism "A human being is born to be a member not only of a family, but a village and,
in a broader sense, a member of a country." (Nghia 2013:10). I was able to observe the influence of
Confucianism on Vietnamese culture as the manager described why he choose these employees. He
mentioned that the employees were "going through the same struggle that [he] went through when
[he] was young... [he] did not speak English very well...". This particular instance allowed me to
better understand ways in which unique Vietnamese values were able to be sustained in Western
Culture. I was surprised initially because I had thought that the restaurant had preserved their culture
physically through their architecture, cooking, and paintings. Instead, this represents an aspect of
Vietnamese culture that one cannot simply understand through physical observation, it represents a
deep rooted sense of integrity that is characteristic of Vietnamese culture. Through this conversation,
I began to better understand how immigrants of a minority population such as Vietnam, were able to
preserve their culture despite it being easier to simply succumb to values popular in Western culture
such as collectivism. Thus far, the concept of Confucianism has served as an example of how
aspects of Vietnamese culture are still present in the Vietnamese descendents working in the

The Effects Of Music On College Students Essay
Introduction:
Stress is defined as "a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very
demanding circumstances." Everyone deals with a situation throughout their life that results in
stress. While everyone harbors stress, stress is especially apparent in college students. According to
the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the country's largest grassroots mental health organization,
rates of anxiety and depression have skyrocketed in what many are calling a crisis of mental health
on college campuses. More than 5 million college students struggle with mental health (Heck).
Because of this, it is pertinent that one finds healthy coping mechanisms.
Music is a plays a large part in every culture. No matter where you are from or what you believe,
music plays a significant role in the average human, but also college students. There are many
reasons why people chose to listen to music. Recently studies have shown that people consciously or
not, listen to music to work out their problems. In a world full of chaos, it is of great importance that
we are not only physically healthy, but mentally healthy as well. That leads one to ask, how does
listening to music actually help one cope with stress?
Findings: Music and the Brain
The calming power of music is not always known, but on college campuses music is a necessity to
everyday life. I observed in my interviews, as well as my online poll, that music allows students to
escape reality and eases stress.

The Primary Mechanisms for Sex Determination Across the...
Manolakou et al. suggest that there are three primary mechanisms for sex determination across the
animal kingdom. The first is environmental factors. Fish and Reptiles do not have chromosomes that
determine the sex of the offspring. The temperature is the primary determinant. Some organisms' sex
will be determined by specific environmental factors like temperature during the right
developmental stages of the embryo. This is referred to as the thermosensitive period (TSP). The
second mechanism is when a specific gene is responsible for a cascade effect that will ultimately
determine the sex of the offspring. This mechanism is seen in some invertebrates like insects, and
amphibians. The single regulating gene has not yet been determined. The third mechanism is the
occurrence of individual sex chromosomes like what we see in mammals. In mammals the males are
heterozygous and the females are homozygous, but in birds the opposite is true, but birds still have
distinct sex chromosomes. Some organisms have distinct sex determining chromosomes, but they
have yet to be discovered. How or why certain organisms develop into certain gender is not
necessarily known, but the idea that there could be some sort of governing pattern could lend itself
useful to comparative biology and reproductive endocrinology. Haplodiploid genetic system is a
very curious mechanism in insects. The insects can be either uniparental or biparental, meaning one
parent or two. The females can

An Army Of One : Me By Jean Twenge
In a world that continues to advance technologically machines titled "sociable robots" acquire life–
like characteristics once exclusive to humans. They are able to express artificial emotions that seem
real to the user. In "Alone Together" by Sherry Turkle we see how sociable robots interact with
children. They begin to feel emotions that were once exclusive to human interaction. In the narrative
"An Army of One: Me" by Jean Twenge we see how prominent the generation gap is. Those under
the age of thirty–five tend to focus more on themselves and making sure they feel worthy. Twenge
appropriately titles this generation as "Generation Me," highlighting the fact that boosts of "self–
esteem" leads to a rise in individualistic focus. Parents expose their children to toys that industries
manufacture to fill the emotional needs children have at a young age. This consequently decreases
the need for human interaction. As technology develops and become more "alive," researchers are
able to find what children desire and are able to give those desires to them in a toy. These new toys
shape how children think and grow, directly affecting them for their entire lives. By changing the
notions of aliveness, sociable robots "cultivate" behaviors representative of Generation Me by
manipulating values important to one's well–being through their expression of life–like emotions
and behaviors. Adults are able to mold the behaviors of their children through the use of an external
factor.

The Millennial Generation : Social Networking
Courtney Marben Professor Nownes English 1108 4 August 2015 The Millennial Generation The
social networking phenomenon has transformed the way friends and families connect, meet, and
interact with each other. People from all around the world are able to connect because of social
networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Social networking has become an aspect
of daily communication for most millennials. Throughout the evolution of social networking comes
the popularization of the selfie. One click of the camera has created a fracture between generations.
Millennials view selfies as a way to document and share experiences while older generations view
selfie takers as narcissistic and disconnected. The millennial generation was deeply affected by
social networking, and by examining selfies, we can learn that this generation values beauty, peer
approval, and companionship. Social networking sites continue to gain in users and popularity. The
first social networking sites were created in the 1990's (Edosomwan et al. 3). These sites included
Six Degrees, BlackPlanet, and MoveOn (Edosomwan et al. 3). Some of these sites are still in
existence. The most popular social networking site, Facebook, was launched in February 2004
(Edosomwan et al. 4). After 6 years Facebook was noted to have over 500 million active users
(Edosomwan et al. 4). As of March 2015, Facebook had 1.4 billion active users (Statista). Social
networking sites have changed the way we connect to each

The American Dream By Dan Kadlec
The American Dream is steadily changing as time goes on and some say this is a bad thing. As
different generations come about the dream changes with the people. As stated by Dan Kadlec in the
article "Millennials Put Their Surprising Stamp on the American Dream" the American dream is
now seen as having control over your daily life. Today 's generation has seen some of the main
aspects of the original American Dream fail greatly so they have made up a new dream. With the
things Millennials have seen change and go wrong they only believe that they can achieve a day to
day lifestyle, but should this really be the case? In another article named "The Hourglass Society"
it's stated by Stewart Lansley that the middle class is going backwards. The idea of the 'hourglass' is
that there are large amounts of people on the top and the bottom, but not many at all in the middle
representing the middle class. This article also states that the American Dream is now only a myth
and this generation only has a "fear of failing". Many say the American Dream is dead but is the
dream really dead or are people too afraid of failure? Millennials of today have seen so many bad
things happen to their parents that they just settle and this shouldn't be the case. The American
Dream is only going to die if we let it happen.
Stewart Lansley, author of 'The Cost of Inequality: Why Economic Equality is Essential for
Recovery' speaks very seriously in "The Hourglass Society" article about inequality.

The Generation Of The New Generation
The unknown future may be frightening, but knowing the Millennials are the next generation of
leaders to change the world should be comforting. Millennials make up the population of society
that was born between 1980 and 2000 and "in America there are more millennials right now than
baby boomers – more than 80 million" (Simmons–Duffit). Just like every new generation, the
Millennials have been endlessly criticized by older generations. They have been called lazy, entitled,
self–absorbed, social media crazed, technology addicts, privileged, and so much more. This
generation change has drawn more public attention than ever before, maybe because of the access to
widespread information nowadays or maybe because this time, it's a bigger deal. Millennials aren't
afraid to address this topic because they believe that they can change the world for the better. They
want the judgements in communities and the criticisms in the workplace to stop. They want society
to realize they are not so different from generations before, they are already transforming life as we
know it, and that they will soon be the next generation of leaders–and nothing can change that.
Although Millennials can be perceived in multiple negative aspects, older generations should be
open to the unique potential that this massive generation has to offer as an opportunity to close the
gap of separation and learn to grow from each other. One of the most common criticism of
Millennials is their tendency to be lazy.

Richardson 1 MacKenzie Richardson English Composition 1101 Amy Towne December 5, 2016 In
the wise words of REO Speedwagon "I'm gonna keep on loving you" the 1980s–2000s was
ridiculous and fun time between inspiring bands and Rubik's cubes. Head over heels married
couples made adorable, chubby faced babies but thinking back to those days, wondering how many
of those married couples would still have had those cute as a button babies if they knew millennials
would become the laughing stock of older generations. Some millennials are described as cry baby,
narcissistic, technology obsessed generation with no concern for others. A cry baby is defined as
someone who gets upset when they are wrong, whines a lot, complains, and very immature.
Children are compared to a block of clay that is molded throughout the years to become a successful
adult. Some millennials are seen as crybabies due to their lack of ability to take criticism while
others believe that millennials ability to stand up for their beliefs and get the work done reflects
back to how millennials were molded as children. Millennials are considered anyone who was born
between the years of 1980–2000. Most other generations such as the Baby Boomers and Generation
X look down upon millennials because of how the world reacts to millennials qualities. Baby
Boomers was anyone born between the years 1946–1964, after World War II. They grew up in a

Gender Roles And Body Images The Minds Of Young Ladies And...
Prompt #3 In today's society, concepts of gender roles and body images plague the minds of young
ladies and men of the millennial generation. These are enforced by popular culture in song, video
and magazines that are published. These roles and images are seen by and influence the minds of
mainly young girls but not more popularly seen, young men. Magazines such as Cosmopolitan,
Vogue and Sports Illustrated flaunt slim women and very muscular men with "perfect" bodies and
hair on their covers and give no thought to the readers and how it may influence their minds. Also,
the artists of this generation also have a large influence on how young men and women see
themselves and perceive their gender roles to be. These affect the minds of persons in ways such as
they end up having a lower self–esteem as they cannot live up to societal image standards, young
men and women tend to follow the gender roles that they see and young girls and boys ultimately
turn to drastic measures to fulfil the body images that they feel they should obtain. As a child
growing up, you tend to look around and see what you believe is normal. As young as 2 years old,
girls are seen playing with Barbie dolls and boys are playing with action figures. It may seem like
just child's play but these young children are being slowly influenced into thinking that slim bodies
for girls and muscular bodies for boys are more accepted than other body shapes. As they grow into
teenagers, models, talk show hosts,

For What Are the Recent Generations Known?
The Baby Boom generation, Baby Bust generation, Generation Y and Millennium Kids (Generation
Z) all left a mark on society, setting the stage for the future generations. Have you ever wondered
about what each generation was known for, what they stood for and what they did? This paper will
tell you exactly what the Baby Boomers, the Baby Bust, Generation Y and Z children and adults
were known for. When you hear "Baby Boom" you think about a lot of babies being born at once.
That's exactly what happened from 1946 to 1966, a lot of babies were born. Once the war ended and
men were coming back to Canada they decided that with peaceful times among them, it would be a
perfect time to have children. Many of the men couldn't wait any longer to have children with their
wives. As the Baby Boom children aged they changed society. Also, many Baby Boomers supported
"drugs, sex and rock and roll". They did drugs, and completely changed the social norm of leaving
sex until after an individual got married. Lastly, the Baby Boomers had lots of opportunity to get an
education and live lifestyles that came with lots of material success. The Baby Boom children left a
huge imprint on their siblings the Baby Bust generation, which lead them (the Baby Bust
generation) to struggle greatly. The Baby Bust generation followed the Baby Boom generation in
1967 to 1979. The children and adults that emerged from the Baby Bust generation were forced to
follow successful parents and older siblings

The Genetics For Mongol Migration
Maryann Steadman
ANTH 3125
2014, October 11th
Reflection Paper One
Genetics for Mongol Migration Mongolia is located in–between Russia and China, and is a neighbor
to Kazakhstan. The people that live there are called Mongols. Mongolia, which is part of Asia, is
part of what composes Eurasia. When it comes to DNA and chromosomal lineage, there are many
factors that lead to how a person will look, who they will mate with, and what decisions they make
in that process. These categories all run under the term genetics. The second week's lecture said that
there are "three major types of genetic data." There is autosomal, Y chromosome, and mitochondrial
DNA. Autosomal is a combination of your mother and father's DNA that makes you. Y
chromosomes come from your father and are given to a son, and mitochondrial DNA comes from
your mother. Everyone has the autosomal and mitochondrial aspects of genetics. The mitochondrial
makeup is just what genes you got from your mother. However, only males have the Y chromosome
aspect of genetics since males sex genes are comprised of XY while females are XX. Mongols (and
their language of Mongolic) originally came from the Altai Mountains, which are near Mongolia
(week lecture two). In the second week's lecture it is also noted that Mongolia may have been the
original location for starting Y chromosomal lineage. In Zerial's article, "The Genetic Legacy of the
Mongols," it talks about Mongols being a star cluster for other people.

The New And Older Generations Of The United Ages Of 18 And...
Assimilation As the American economy continues to incorporate the younger generation into the
working class, steps must be taken to maximize employee potential. The impact of workers between
the ages of 18 and 32, Generation Y or Millennials, is unquestionably an organizational concern for
many employers. According to a 2013 Ernst & Young survey, 87% of Millennials have moved into
management positions in the last five years. With that level of upward mobility, issues and conflicts
are certain to arise due to the vastly different workplace ethics, management styles, etc. held by the
new and older generations. For a company to be an innovative competitor in the marketplace, it is
important for its employees to be able to work productively while accommodating generational
differences. The 2013 Ernst & Young survey also found that more than 69% of respondents said
their company had made an effort to alleviate the challenges that arise with a generational blend.
Employee cooperation is an important goal for these companies because it is vital for them to thrive
in the rapidly evolving workplace. Without cooperation between the distinct generational groups,
management problems will certainly arise. Leaders should attempt to mitigate these problems by
allowing employees to work in a style that suits their particular needs. While certain standards must
be in place to maintain orderly operations, flexibility must be demonstrated so that employees
remain loyal to the firm. Favoring

Communication across Generations
Supervising staff and volunteers from ages fourteen to ninety can be a challenging task. These age
groups make up the four different generations: Traditionalist, Baby Boomers, Generation X'ers, and
Generation Y'ers. Traditionalist, (born 1925–1946) may need a little prodding to communicate their
needs and they prefer written communication plans. Baby Boomers, (born 1946–1964) are aware of
technology but still prefer to communicate by telephone and they call themselves the age of the
memo. Generation X'ers, (born 1965–1982) commonly prefer short concise communication.

her through the process. As a member of the Traditionalist Generation, she respects authority, not
wanting to disappoint my director. I should have paid closer attention to her nonverbal

This incident also raises another issue. POH employees depend on e–mail and the intranet for our as

these styles allows them to provide a remarkable patient experience for all our patients. Without

The Diversity Within The Workplace Essay
INTRODUCTION
The need for one organization to outperform the others has given rise to a diverse workforce
comprising of different individuals who significantly differ from one another. Diversity in the
workplace has been defined as the differences and similarities among the employees that make up an
organization in terms of age, cultural background, sex, religion (Anon., n.d.). The diversity in the
workplace in terms of age is more often referred to as generational diversity.
The desire by some to stay and work longer has led to the current workforce capturing many
generations. With countries such as the US capturing as many as 5 distinct generations, others have
been able to capture 4 and 3. The various generations segment the different age ranges into
generations generally governed by different attitudes to work, preferences and value systems. The
attitude, preference, and values held by any generation affect the way they approach their works.
21st–century organizations tend to prefer managers who can deal with the different generations as
they have different characteristics and present diverse challenges. The attitude of the various
generations greatly differs in the workplace. The generations in the workforce have been segmented
into the following demographics: the Traditionalists (also known as the silent generation or the
greatest generation); the baby boomers; generation X; generation Y (also known as Millennial), and
finally generation Z. An understanding of these

The Impact Of Media On The Media
It seems that the cultural landscape is ever changing and evolving. Issues that were rarely discussed
in media are now at the frontline of our media coverage, such as police brutality, racial disparity and
immigration reform. Everything from political party preference to the increasing diversity of race
and sexual orientation in each generation has an effect on the values portrayed in media. The value
of each new generation effects how the media shapes itself to market to that general public. In order
to understand the fluidity of the media, it is important to examine the change in the landscape of
media, and how it has adapted to meet each generations needs. Though many generations feel that
the developments of social media has caused a sort of "digital divide," many argue that media itself
has caused this misconception through images that, "pokes fun at parents and grandparents trying to
understand the means of Twitter and Facebook as young children sit playing games on their iPad
(Warrington)." Warrington, with The Collegian, argues that though there may be a slight divide
between generations, this can only be expected with such advances in our access to media, and the
younger generation is always the first to adapt to new media. For instance, in the 1940's and 50's,
many radio programs, such as The Lone Ranger and Tom Mix, were marketed towards the "Silent
Generation," who had adapted to this technology much easier than their parents and grandparents
(OTRCAT.com).

Essay On Generation Gap

  • 1. Essay on Generation Gap Essay on Generation Gap How many times have you felt that your parents don't understand you, that they have no respect for you as an individual? How often do you shake your head in frustration and blame it on the 'generation gap'? Parents! They are like aliens from another planet altogether! You and they are in different camps; strangers forced to live under the same roof Right? Wrong! There is a way of bridging what appears to be a yawning chasm. If you genuinely want to improve your relationship with your parents (and give them a big shock in the bargain!) try listening to them, treating them just like you would listen to a valued friend. Instead of always whining, 'You don't understand me", stop and think. Do we ever try and understand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Generation gap means difference in attitude, or lack of understanding between younger and older generation. This generation gap has always been there but these days it has reached to an explosive stage. The values and patterns of life have changed to a great extent. Today, everybody likes to live and behave in his own way. This attitude has widened the generation gap, which can never be filled. It is now destroying family life completely. The elders look after the children and make all sorts of sacrifices to bring them up. Naturally, they feel they have a right over them. They want their children to follow their instructions as they have certain expectations from them. But the children, when they grow up, want a complete freedom in their thoughts and actions and unfortunately their thoughts and actions are just opposite to those expected by the elders. They revolt when any kind of restrictions are imposed on them. Consequently, the family breaks up and everything gets ruined. In India, we are yet in the initial stages, but the gap has appeared and it is going to grow bigger day by day. So it is not only the responsibility of the younger but also of the elders to fill this gap with their love, affection and trust. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Future Of The Millennial Generation My Grandma used to tell me that every penny saved is a penny earned, but what she didn't mention was how hard it is to actually save that money in this time period where money is just some set of digits on a screen. The millennial generation is in more of a financial crunch now than any other generation has ever been in and it's looking like its getting worse. You can call them narcissistic, materialistic, and entitled, but millennials are set on the hunt on achieving financial goals. They are trying to keep up with their friends with the latest technology that booms something new every day. They are trying to get by financially with their current situations and trying to live their daily lives. Some are paying off their education, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Millennials who are in student debt will make more than half a million compared to high school graduates. (Dunlop para 2). I believe that this shows to some extent that they are financially responsible to use it for something that will benefit in the long run; they are in debt because they have to be to" make it" with the costly expenses and in the future if they increase. More Job opportunities are out there, but they are looking for more experience and education in the desired work or field. While student loans rank the highest debt on the list, credit card debt is another form of debt that has millennials tearing up their credit cards. Technology through communication for example, has been a beneficial thing to many to stay in contact with friends and family members in a more efficient and fast way than ever before. • 10. Managing Multi Generation Workforce MANAGING MULTI–GENERATION WORKFORCE – A NEW CHALLENGE IN I.T. INDUSTRY By: Nidhi Chandorkar Bunts Sangha's S.M. Shetty College of Science, Commerce & Management Studies, Powai ABSTRACT: Today is the time which can be marked when we can see four generation rubbing their shoulders more or less happily under the same roof of an organisation. Though these generations show drastic variations in terms of their values, commitments, motivational factors, dissatisfiers, work environment, approach towards job etc., yet every generation has got some exceptional benefits for the organisation. Organisation cannot afford to value any of them less than the others. Talking about IT industry, we can hardly see anyone from the oldest generation who are called as the Traditionalists. As the IT sector has reached its forties you can find atleast three generations Baby– Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y joining hands for the success of the organisation. Easier said than done, managing these three generation has given a tough time to the top managers. The industries have seen their employees below 25 years of age growing into more matured workforce and their changed focus have forced the Human Resource Managers to change their basic policies, which were initially made for care free employees recruited freshly from the campus. This situation has not only posed a challenge in terms of managing the differences but also making them work under same policy framework. This research work helps in ... • 14. Beauty ( Re ) Discovers The Male Body, By Susan Bordo In her essay "Beauty (Re)discovers the Male Body," Susan Bordo manages to recognize an underlying fundamental change in society's attitude towards advertisements and specifically sees that unfold in the growing shift towards male sexually oriented advertisements with a focus on feministic qualities. Furthermore, since Bordo wrote this essay in the 1990s, the advancements in technology have caused growing ideological differences between generations as their responses to things like social media and advertisements elicit contrasting reactions. The Millennials, also known as Generation Y, have been born into the various outlets of social media and have become accustomed to a greater sense of comfort with the Internet as they share all of their life stories and photos with other human beings. On the other hand, Generation X and the Baby Boomers were born into an era that didn't depend on technology to perform everyday tasks. As a result, their mindsets make them reluctant to the changes in technology, which inadvertently makes them more uncomfortable to any massive changes in social media. By using sexually oriented advertisements, Kraft Foods and Axe, effectively display differing ideological differences between Generation X and Generation Y. In conjunction, Bordo's elements of the gaze, objectification, and the rocks and leaners pose allow us to better understand the construction of the advertisements and the role they play on influencing each targeted generation. • 18. Analyzing The Many Facets We Face The purpose of this commentary paper is to explain and describe the many facets we face in our working day. I work for a company that makes aftermarket parts for mining dragline shovels, extensive cutting spades, parts for railroad rail cars, undercarriages for TRAC type equipment, and the notorious NASA Space Shuttle program in which we built the shuttle crawler which transported the Space Shuttle to the launch pad. Our environment is very dynamic and spans across different cultures and countries. Have you ever thought about how companies maintain a working relationship with other countries working in the same line of business? Let me tell you, that we are not all that different, as we share rather the same goals and results. A working environment that is motivated by the mining industry is both dynamic and exciting. Our company is based out of Gillette, Wyoming and has a population of 29,000 people. The resources and availability factors skilled labor and education in the mining industry with a communication infrastructure. The mining industry follows a code of law which is strongly influenced by OSHA's rules and regulations, which sometimes are policed by political processes. Today, many companies if not most, are driven by digital access. We rely on connectivity to ensure a strong infrastructure, keeping connectivity reliable and consistent supporting a precise manufacturing process. • 22. Generational Diversity At The Workplace Essay Generational Diversity at the Workplace In her article "The Tethered Generation," in Society of Human Resources Magazine, writer Kathryn Tyler asserts that people born between 1978 and 1999, also known as the Millennial Generation, would bring challenges to the workplace, attributing early access to technology and a "perpetual connection to parents" as causes. The article's central tenet is that through technology, this generation's "tethered" relationship with peers and parents has shaped communication, decision making, and need for connectivity. Tyler identifies the following Millennial traits as challenges to organizations: "unrealistic expectations with respect to goal–setting and planning;" "only adequate professionalism and work ethic, creativity and innovation, and critical thinking and problem solving;" and lack of autonomy and "sense of self–reliance." The article ends by recommending that human resource management prepare for the Millennial's "high maintenance" and their parent's "helicoptering" with policies and training programs (Tyler, 2007). This is a well written–article that uses as supporting evidence neuroscience researching findings, anecdotes, quotations from authoritative figures, and survey statistics from HR managers. If I were a manager of the Baby Boomer or Gen X generation, Tyler's recommendations might alleviate anxiety about the inevitability of navigating the generational gap with younger employees. • 26. Fragile X Disease Essay Fragile X is a disease which severely influences the everyday lives of those affected by it. It is a disease which unfortunately limits an individual in several respects. Physical symptoms include an elongated face with larger than normal ears and feet. Additionally, the individual will have a difficult time interacting with others due to shyness and trouble with processing faces, thus encountering behavioral road blocks. Most importantly, the individual may have intellectual disabilities such as difficulty with memory, all a result of having Fragile X. Fragile X is the most common single gene which leads to autism and other intellectual disabilities. Fragile X is transmitted through DNA. Within the DNA, it has been found that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As previously stated, those with more than 30 repeated trinucleotides of CGG are likely to develop some form of Fragile X (often referred to as premutation), with those having over 200 repeats having the full syndrome (also known as a full mutation). All of the repeated trinucleotides are located within the promotor region of the FMR1 gene. The reason the FMR1 gene produces so little FMRP is due to a process called methylation. "Methylation is a process which inactivates a gene, and the larger number of repeats inactivates the gene. When the gene is inactivated, the cell may make little or none of the needed FMRP." (NICHD 2009). Figure 2: Normal promoter region VS. Elongated promoter region (NICHD 2009) Intriguingly enough, in certain cases, despite having 200+ CGG trinucleotide repeats within a FMR1 gene, it is still possible to be able to produce FMRP. One way this can be performed is by being born female. Males are born with an X and Y chromosome. Females however, are born with two X chromosomes. A female with Fragile X in one chromosome may not necessarily have Fragile X within the other chromosome. Within the female, certain cells may choose to activate one of the X chromosomes, and other cells may choose to activate the other X chromosome. Hence, even though there exists a Fragile X chromosome, not all cells within the body will use it, thus the production of FMRP is possible using the other normal X chromosome. ... The various gaps would also have a huge impact on a particular workplace depending on the modernity of the year. Although the generations by definition are somewhat different, the Baby Boomers generation includes people born from 1961 to 1976 (Glass 2007). Because Generation X is so much smaller than the Baby Boomer generation there is predicted to be a labor shortage within the next fifteen years. The oldest members of the Baby Boomer Generation are beginning to retire and Generation X is not large enough to replace them. This leads to shortage in the supply of highly trained employees which put the employers of offering better benefit than another company. Hence the employees took advantage of this position to job hop from one position to another or even worse from one place to another when they find a better benefit (eg : higher salary, higher medical benefit and even more leaves). Because of this unhealthy habit, the Human Resouce has come up with one HR policy as employee retention. The working environment in the modern century are much different than the olden days. The Baby – Boomers generation, similar to their grandparents days are more likely to be conservatives. They are likely to be believe and trust that the organisation would take care of them. Most likely we see these type of people work in the government sectors where they devote their whole life to the organization and even retire with the same organizations. On the ... • 34. What We Eat As Humans? If you were to ask any average American, most would not realize the importance of their culture's food and how distinct it makes them from others in the world. What we eat as humans can drastically affect how we view the world as well as the country we live in. As countries develop and become more advanced politically, traditional cultural aspects including food and cuisine can be lost over time. Traditionally, older dishes that were cooked and prepared in a country's past may lose its significance over time and eventually lose its cultural importance. In the country of Vietnam, there have been many hardships and issues only a half century ago that the country has had to deal with as a whole. Political unrest during times of struggle made it difficult for Vietnam to develop culturally and build on their food and cuisine. However, as I found out during my research and interview, Vietnamese (especially younger adults in Vietnam) have made a conscious effort to return these traditional dishes in their dishes of choice, regain a sense of nationalism that has brought the country into a more secure and developed society. On a cold November Sunday, I began interviewing my former roommate James about Vietnamese Cuisine and its affect culture. Initially I was not sure what to ask him, he had been born in Vietnam in the late 90's but since being adopted, he was forced to move from his home country to America. Generation X, By Megan Johnson And Larry Johnson Essay  Generations, INC.: From Boomers to Linksters–Managing the Friction Between Generations at Work by Megan Johnson and Larry Johnson Chapter Four: Big Bird, Wayne's World, and Home Alone: Signposts for Generation X Accordingly, occasionally known as the "Forgotten generation of all of the four generations," Generation X continues to redefined that similar to the prior generations, Generation X has made and continues to make historic strives on society as well. First, Generation Xers redefined how pursing a higher education and focusing on establishing a career, demonstrated to previous generations that the terms of marriage and starting a family can be "Put on hold, for now." To paraphrase, Johnson and Johnson (2010) note that in 1985, half of the college students attendees were women of Generation X (p. 64). What is more, as these women attended college, the marriage in America declined to forty–seven percent between the 1940s to the mid–1970s (Johnson and Johnson, 2010, p. 64). Moreover, Generation Xers in the workplace embraced creating a work and life balance, demonstrating independence in the workplace; expecting the workplace to be an engaging experience. On the other hand, Generation X has faced an overwhelmed fault of negative stereotypes of Generation X has overwhelmingly portrayed the generation has redefined stereotypes placed on them by society. • 42. Declining Student Resilience : A Serious Problem For... In the article, "Declining Student Resilience: A Serious Problem for Colleges", Peter Gray states, "There has been an increase in diagnosable mental health problems, but there has also been a decrease in the ability of many young people to manage the everyday bumps in the road of life". It has come up a lot that millennials do not have Grit, unlike other generations. Millennials come off as lazy or immature in society today. Millennials always have a reminder from their parents or grandparents saying, "back in my day...." or "you're lucky, you have it easy". Other generations tend to give millennials a harder time on how they are performing in a school setting. Some generations believe that millennials are babied by their parents. Everyone has their own opinions about other generations. There are many similarities and differences between millennials and other generations on how they perform in schools. Some examples on how they are different and similar are work ethic, pressure, and technology. These examples come from actual opinions from millennials and other generations on their perspectives when comparing millennials and other generations in a school setting. Work ethic is a big factor on how well you will do in school, and how high your grades will be. Work ethic is about fifty–fifty with results from the survey. About half of people said work ethic for millennials is higher than what it used to be compared to other generations. For example, my survey answer from my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mango Bay is a great snorkeling site because it has huge schools of fish, which can actually be seen from the surface. You will generally find this throng of fish by the Mango Bay resort. They believe the answer is "adult learning theory" and they would try to use this method to avoid using technology. Also, the authors talk about learning in the classrooms being relatively different than it was before, some teachers don't use the classroom at all and lecture online. Article also points around the Internet as a whole being some sort of teacher, Google for example. Google spits out about any kind of information that you may need. These authors also go on to state that older generations aren't really that worried about the advance in technology and that they are more focused on the news and literature than the "internet boom". But that the televisions are aiming towards trying to get their viewers more involved in the internet. I don't think that classrooms will become completely technology dependent and I feel like that is what the authors are trying to hint at. I do think that our generation has become dependent on technology but I disagree that everyone has to learn it. I think that it is important that adults learn this new way of "living" in a sense, but I do not believe that it should be a necessity. The authors also say that society as a whole is turning into technology, I disagree. Although a vast majority of Millennials have generation X parents. Growing up as a Millennial, technology became more advanced which seems to be the root of the disliking for us from every generation before us. Our parents are "America 's neglected middle child" and we the Millennials are the future of today. We excel with technology, but struggle with our income, causing us to push back commitments other generations would have already done. Millennials want access not ownership. A growing percent of us are putting off buying houses, marriage, children, and buying cars. Being so technologically advanced we look for convenience over hard work, even in our purchases, "57% of Millennials who compare prices in stores. (AIMIA Inc. "Born this Way: US Millennial Loyalty Survey" ©2012)" Online purchases are happening more than ever, with taking in the factor of good quality and prices. "Millennials have come of age during a time of technological change, globalization and economic disruption. That's given them a different set of behaviors and experiences than their parents (© 2016 Goldman Sachs)." Employees over the age of 40 are protected under law from discrimination under the Age Discrimination and Employment Act of 967 (ADEA). However, that does not change the beliefs of some organizations that employees over the age of 40 are not as beneficial or productive as those younger than the age of 40. Communication skills are important to any organization and employees are expected to be professional and be able to express their ideas and opinions in that manner. Good communication skills are not limited to one area, to be an effective communicator you must be a good listener, be able to read body language as well as express your ideas verbally and in written form. Employees older the age of 40, have not grown up with the technology that we have today and have relied more on hand written, typed, face to face and verbal communication in a way much different than today. Because staff members over the age of 40 have spent their careers in a more formal work environment, the communication that they prefer tends to be more formal as well. Social media a fairly new way of communication that has grown significantly over the past decade and while can be a very beneficial way of communicating, it can also affect an employee negatively. The tendency to post a status about a bad day or something that may have not been for public release could harm the company or the employee's relationship with coworkers. • 70. The Future Of The American Economy The future of the American economy rests heavily on the millennial generation's shoulders. This generation (ages 16–36) is America's next work force, politicians, CEOs, parents, soldiers, writers, and teachers. But, does this generation possess the stamina, grit and patience upon which our ancestors depended so greatly? The millennial generation's demand for instant gratification implies that they are not capable of providing our nation with the stability it so desperately needs. Roberts summarizes this sentiment by saying, "From top to bottom, we are becoming a society ruled by impulse, by the reflexive reach for quick rewards. We are becoming an Impulse Society." Roberts points out that our nations is being driven by desire, not need. This driving force is impacting even the youngest of our population. In her Ted Talk in 2012, Economist Silvia Barcellos discusses the results of an instant gratification test. The test involved giving young children each one marshmallow. They are told that if they do not eat the marshmallow for 15 minutes they will receive another; if they eat the original marshmallow before that time, they will not receive another. The results showed that two out of every three children ate the marshmallow before the 15 minutes were completed. The temptation to eat the marshmallow and experience immediate gratification was simply too great. Silvia explains, "People tend to choose the things that give them instant pleasure over long term benefits (TED TALK ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Unlike Baby boomers, where equality was a core value, Gen X experienced more cultural diversity, higher levels of education, with some even attaining college degrees. • 78. The Tethered Generation By Kathryn Tyler In her article "The Tethered Generation" for HR Magazine in May 2007, freelance writer Kathryn Tyler asserts that due to the fact that millennials grew up with new technologies such as the cell phone and internet, many of the skills they need to integrate into the workforce is severely lacking. She goes on to support this argument by addressing millennial connectivity and helicopter parents. With Tyler's background in human resources and training and her proclamation of being member of generation X, Tyler shares her observation that millennials entering the workforce are tethered to technology, which in turn effects their work, communication, and decision making skills in and out of the office. By supplying the reader with information about these transgressions, Tyler builds her claim that HR professionals should work harder to accommodate the millennials' shortcomings. She appears to write in hopes of HR professionals understanding why Millennials have developed into the people that they are in order to provide HR professionals with a better understanding of them and to teach these professionals how to deal with their millennial employees. Tyler's explicit argument, which effectively appeals to her audience's perception of millennials, is supported by an appeal to ethos in which she employs statements from credible professionals to optimize her argument. This strategy of opting to sparingly use her own voice in the text poses a unique method of making her audience more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nurses Diverse Cultural Background And Impact On Care Essay Nurses diverse cultural background and impact on care Tabytha Balash Ohio University Nurses diverse cultural background and impact on care Cultural diversity is when a group of individuals from different cultures come together. The cultural differences include; race, ethnicity, language, nationality, religion, age, gender, social status, or sexual orientation come together (Andrews, & Boyle, 2016). Cultural diversity incorporates how individuals perceive themselves, and how he or she perceives others of different cultures or sub–cultures. Age or generation is an essential aspect of workforce diversity. Generation is important because the individuals are born within the same time period, providing common views, and beliefs because of the common exposure at a young age (Rajput, Bali, & Kesarwani, 2013). This paper will provide an overview of the four Generations represented in the current workforce today, an overview of the generation that I belong to, and lastly, an explanation of how one group can learn from another. Overview of Four Generations The four generations presented in this paper are: The Veterans, The Baby Boomers, Generation X, and the Millennias. The Veterans, also known as seniors or traditionalist, were born between 1925 and 1945 (Andrews & Boyle 2016). The foundations of businesses are its customers, and unless that company is a monopoly, competition between businesses will drive customers and revenues to one business or another. Unless it is properly managed, maintaining customer relationships can be expensive. In his Ted talk "Millennials: Who They are & Why We Hate Them", Scott Hess discusses a number of companies, including Abercrombie and Fitch as a company that endorsed the typically "cliquish" and judgmental characteristics associated with the "gen x". That is not surprising considering that the company restructured in 1979 as a modern sportswear outlet (Lepore, 2011). Meanwhile, American Eagle is seen as marketing "for everyone", looking to attract the inclusive and tolerant characteristics of the Millennials (Hess, 2011). Perhaps even more importantly is the increasing demand for value for the customer in a meaningful way. In its customer priority list, in addition to personal customer values, Inc includes "value that's superior to other options" (James, 2013). Another way of looking at this particular value is in terms of global influence and impact, as well as connectedness; people want to have a positive influence on the world. As Hess remarks, one of Starbucks' campaigns was to invest in their coffee farmers and suppliers (Hess, 2011). The impact on the consumer is the feeling that purchasing coffee at Starbucks is beneficial to other communities. Through collectivism "A human being is born to be a member not only of a family, but a village and, in a broader sense, a member of a country." (Nghia 2013:10). I was able to observe the influence of Confucianism on Vietnamese culture as the manager described why he choose these employees. He mentioned that the employees were "going through the same struggle that [he] went through when [he] was young... [he] did not speak English very well...". This particular instance allowed me to better understand ways in which unique Vietnamese values were able to be sustained in Western Culture. I was surprised initially because I had thought that the restaurant had preserved their culture physically through their architecture, cooking, and paintings. Instead, this represents an aspect of Vietnamese culture that one cannot simply understand through physical observation, it represents a deep rooted sense of integrity that is characteristic of Vietnamese culture. Through this conversation, I began to better understand how immigrants of a minority population such as Vietnam, were able to preserve their culture despite it being easier to simply succumb to values popular in Western culture such as collectivism. Everyone deals with a situation throughout their life that results in stress. While everyone harbors stress, stress is especially apparent in college students. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the country's largest grassroots mental health organization, rates of anxiety and depression have skyrocketed in what many are calling a crisis of mental health on college campuses. More than 5 million college students struggle with mental health (Heck). Because of this, it is pertinent that one finds healthy coping mechanisms. Music is a plays a large part in every culture. No matter where you are from or what you believe, music plays a significant role in the average human, but also college students. There are many reasons why people chose to listen to music. Recently studies have shown that people consciously or not, listen to music to work out their problems. In a world full of chaos, it is of great importance that we are not only physically healthy, but mentally healthy as well. That leads one to ask, how does listening to music actually help one cope with stress? • 98. The Primary Mechanisms for Sex Determination Across the... Manolakou et al. suggest that there are three primary mechanisms for sex determination across the animal kingdom. The first is environmental factors. Fish and Reptiles do not have chromosomes that determine the sex of the offspring. The temperature is the primary determinant. Some organisms' sex will be determined by specific environmental factors like temperature during the right developmental stages of the embryo. This is referred to as the thermosensitive period (TSP). The second mechanism is when a specific gene is responsible for a cascade effect that will ultimately determine the sex of the offspring. This mechanism is seen in some invertebrates like insects, and amphibians. The single regulating gene has not yet been determined. The third mechanism is the occurrence of individual sex chromosomes like what we see in mammals. In mammals the males are heterozygous and the females are homozygous, but in birds the opposite is true, but birds still have distinct sex chromosomes. Some organisms have distinct sex determining chromosomes, but they have yet to be discovered. How or why certain organisms develop into certain gender is not necessarily known, but the idea that there could be some sort of governing pattern could lend itself useful to comparative biology and reproductive endocrinology. Haplodiploid genetic system is a very curious mechanism in insects. The insects can be either uniparental or biparental, meaning one parent or two. The females can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They are able to express artificial emotions that seem real to the user. In "Alone Together" by Sherry Turkle we see how sociable robots interact with children. They begin to feel emotions that were once exclusive to human interaction. In the narrative "An Army of One: Me" by Jean Twenge we see how prominent the generation gap is. Those under the age of thirty–five tend to focus more on themselves and making sure they feel worthy. Twenge appropriately titles this generation as "Generation Me," highlighting the fact that boosts of "self– esteem" leads to a rise in individualistic focus. Parents expose their children to toys that industries manufacture to fill the emotional needs children have at a young age. This consequently decreases the need for human interaction. As technology develops and become more "alive," researchers are able to find what children desire and are able to give those desires to them in a toy. These new toys shape how children think and grow, directly affecting them for their entire lives. By changing the notions of aliveness, sociable robots "cultivate" behaviors representative of Generation Me by manipulating values important to one's well–being through their expression of life–like emotions and behaviors. Adults are able to mold the behaviors of their children through the use of an external factor. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 106. The Millennial Generation : Social Networking Courtney Marben Professor Nownes English 1108 4 August 2015 The Millennial Generation The social networking phenomenon has transformed the way friends and families connect, meet, and interact with each other. People from all around the world are able to connect because of social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Social networking has become an aspect of daily communication for most millennials. Throughout the evolution of social networking comes the popularization of the selfie. One click of the camera has created a fracture between generations. Millennials view selfies as a way to document and share experiences while older generations view selfie takers as narcissistic and disconnected. The millennial generation was deeply affected by social networking, and by examining selfies, we can learn that this generation values beauty, peer approval, and companionship. Social networking sites continue to gain in users and popularity. The first social networking sites were created in the 1990's (Edosomwan et al. 3). These sites included Six Degrees, BlackPlanet, and MoveOn (Edosomwan et al. 3). Some of these sites are still in existence. The most popular social networking site, Facebook, was launched in February 2004 (Edosomwan et al. 4). After 6 years Facebook was noted to have over 500 million active users (Edosomwan et al. 4). As different generations come about the dream changes with the people. As stated by Dan Kadlec in the article "Millennials Put Their Surprising Stamp on the American Dream" the American dream is now seen as having control over your daily life. Today 's generation has seen some of the main aspects of the original American Dream fail greatly so they have made up a new dream. With the things Millennials have seen change and go wrong they only believe that they can achieve a day to day lifestyle, but should this really be the case? In another article named "The Hourglass Society" it's stated by Stewart Lansley that the middle class is going backwards. The idea of the 'hourglass' is that there are large amounts of people on the top and the bottom, but not many at all in the middle representing the middle class. This article also states that the American Dream is now only a myth and this generation only has a "fear of failing". Many say the American Dream is dead but is the dream really dead or are people too afraid of failure? Millennials of today have seen so many bad things happen to their parents that they just settle and this shouldn't be the case. The American Dream is only going to die if we let it happen. • 114. The Generation Of The New Generation The unknown future may be frightening, but knowing the Millennials are the next generation of leaders to change the world should be comforting. Millennials make up the population of society that was born between 1980 and 2000 and "in America there are more millennials right now than baby boomers – more than 80 million" (Simmons–Duffit). Just like every new generation, the Millennials have been endlessly criticized by older generations. They have been called lazy, entitled, self–absorbed, social media crazed, technology addicts, privileged, and so much more. This generation change has drawn more public attention than ever before, maybe because of the access to widespread information nowadays or maybe because this time, it's a bigger deal. Millennials aren't afraid to address this topic because they believe that they can change the world for the better. They want the judgements in communities and the criticisms in the workplace to stop. They want society to realize they are not so different from generations before, they are already transforming life as we know it, and that they will soon be the next generation of leaders–and nothing can change that. Although Millennials can be perceived in multiple negative aspects, older generations should be open to the unique potential that this massive generation has to offer as an opportunity to close the gap of separation and learn to grow from each other. One of the most common criticism of Millennials is their tendency to be lazy. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A cry baby is defined as someone who gets upset when they are wrong, whines a lot, complains, and very immature. Children are compared to a block of clay that is molded throughout the years to become a successful adult. Some millennials are seen as crybabies due to their lack of ability to take criticism while others believe that millennials ability to stand up for their beliefs and get the work done reflects back to how millennials were molded as children. Prompt #3 In today's society, concepts of gender roles and body images plague the minds of young ladies and men of the millennial generation. These are enforced by popular culture in song, video and magazines that are published. These roles and images are seen by and influence the minds of mainly young girls but not more popularly seen, young men. Magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Vogue and Sports Illustrated flaunt slim women and very muscular men with "perfect" bodies and hair on their covers and give no thought to the readers and how it may influence their minds. Also, the artists of this generation also have a large influence on how young men and women see themselves and perceive their gender roles to be. These affect the minds of persons in ways such as they end up having a lower self–esteem as they cannot live up to societal image standards, young men and women tend to follow the gender roles that they see and young girls and boys ultimately turn to drastic measures to fulfil the body images that they feel they should obtain. As a child growing up, you tend to look around and see what you believe is normal. As young as 2 years old, girls are seen playing with Barbie dolls and boys are playing with action figures. The Baby Boom generation, Baby Bust generation, Generation Y and Millennium Kids (Generation Z) all left a mark on society, setting the stage for the future generations. Have you ever wondered about what each generation was known for, what they stood for and what they did? This paper will tell you exactly what the Baby Boomers, the Baby Bust, Generation Y and Z children and adults were known for. When you hear "Baby Boom" you think about a lot of babies being born at once. That's exactly what happened from 1946 to 1966, a lot of babies were born. Once the war ended and men were coming back to Canada they decided that with peaceful times among them, it would be a perfect time to have children. Many of the men couldn't wait any longer to have children with their wives. As the Baby Boom children aged they changed society. Also, many Baby Boomers supported "drugs, sex and rock and roll". They did drugs, and completely changed the social norm of leaving sex until after an individual got married. Lastly, the Baby Boomers had lots of opportunity to get an education and live lifestyles that came with lots of material success. The Baby Boom children left a huge imprint on their siblings the Baby Bust generation, which lead them (the Baby Bust generation) to struggle greatly. • 134. The Genetics For Mongol Migration Maryann Steadman ANTH 3125 2014, October 11th Reflection Paper One Genetics for Mongol Migration Mongolia is located in–between Russia and China, and is a neighbor to Kazakhstan. The people that live there are called Mongols. Mongolia, which is part of Asia, is part of what composes Eurasia. When it comes to DNA and chromosomal lineage, there are many factors that lead to how a person will look, who they will mate with, and what decisions they make in that process. These categories all run under the term genetics. The second week's lecture said that there are "three major types of genetic data." There is autosomal, Y chromosome, and mitochondrial DNA. Autosomal is a combination of your mother and father's DNA that makes you. Y chromosomes come from your father and are given to a son, and mitochondrial DNA comes from your mother. Everyone has the autosomal and mitochondrial aspects of genetics. The mitochondrial makeup is just what genes you got from your mother. However, only males have the Y chromosome aspect of genetics since males sex genes are comprised of XY while females are XX. Mongols (and their language of Mongolic) originally came from the Altai Mountains, which are near Mongolia (week lecture two). In the second week's lecture it is also noted that Mongolia may have been the original location for starting Y chromosomal lineage. In Zerial's article, "The Genetic Legacy of the Mongols," it talks about Mongols being a star cluster for other people. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 138. The New And Older Generations Of The United Ages Of 18 And... Assimilation As the American economy continues to incorporate the younger generation into the working class, steps must be taken to maximize employee potential. The impact of workers between the ages of 18 and 32, Generation Y or Millennials, is unquestionably an organizational concern for many employers. According to a 2013 Ernst & Young survey, 87% of Millennials have moved into management positions in the last five years. With that level of upward mobility, issues and conflicts are certain to arise due to the vastly different workplace ethics, management styles, etc. held by the new and older generations. For a company to be an innovative competitor in the marketplace, it is important for its employees to be able to work productively while accommodating generational differences. The 2013 Ernst & Young survey also found that more than 69% of respondents said their company had made an effort to alleviate the challenges that arise with a generational blend. Employee cooperation is an important goal for these companies because it is vital for them to thrive in the rapidly evolving workplace. Without cooperation between the distinct generational groups, management problems will certainly arise. Leaders should attempt to mitigate these problems by allowing employees to work in a style that suits their particular needs. While certain standards must be in place to maintain orderly operations, flexibility must be demonstrated so that employees remain loyal to the firm. Favoring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 142. Communication Across Generations Essay Communication across Generations Supervising staff and volunteers from ages fourteen to ninety can be a challenging task. These age groups make up the four different generations: Traditionalist, Baby Boomers, Generation X'ers, and Generation Y'ers. Traditionalist, (born 1925–1946) may need a little prodding to communicate their needs and they prefer written communication plans. Baby Boomers, (born 1946–1964) are aware of technology but still prefer to communicate by telephone and they call themselves the age of the memo. Generation X'ers, (born 1965–1982) commonly prefer short concise communication. Generation Y'ers, (born 1983–2000) prefer short, quick e–mails, texting and mobile phone applications to communicate. I emailed her three times with the step–by–step directions about how to complete the declination form. She never responded to me or completed this task. My director instructed her to complete this task and walked her through the process. As a member of the Traditionalist Generation, she respects authority, not wanting to disappoint my director. I should have paid closer attention to her nonverbal communication and gone to her for task completion. Being a member of this generation, I may fail to listen actively to those Baby Boomer and Traditionalists that I interact with daily. This incident also raises another issue. POH employees depend on e–mail and the intranet for our as our main sources of communication, but we still have employees who are unsure of their computer literacy. All employees should receive mandatory training on e–mailing and the intranet to be competent in these areas. The ability to provide our patients with a remarkable patient experience is the number–one responsibility of our staff. Each generation has their own communication style, these styles allows them to provide a remarkable patient experience for all our patients. Without communication tools, each generation is unable to communicate to the patient. I have a patient advocate who reports to me. She is a member of the Baby Boomer Generation. • 146. The Diversity Within The Workplace Essay INTRODUCTION The need for one organization to outperform the others has given rise to a diverse workforce comprising of different individuals who significantly differ from one another. Diversity in the workplace has been defined as the differences and similarities among the employees that make up an organization in terms of age, cultural background, sex, religion (Anon., n.d.). The diversity in the workplace in terms of age is more often referred to as generational diversity. The desire by some to stay and work longer has led to the current workforce capturing many generations. With countries such as the US capturing as many as 5 distinct generations, others have been able to capture 4 and 3. The various generations segment the different age ranges into generations generally governed by different attitudes to work, preferences and value systems. The attitude, preference, and values held by any generation affect the way they approach their works. 21st–century organizations tend to prefer managers who can deal with the different generations as they have different characteristics and present diverse challenges. The attitude of the various generations greatly differs in the workplace. The generations in the workforce have been segmented into the following demographics: the Traditionalists (also known as the silent generation or the greatest generation); the baby boomers; generation X; generation Y (also known as Millennial), and finally generation Z. • 154. The Impact Of Media On The Media It seems that the cultural landscape is ever changing and evolving. Issues that were rarely discussed in media are now at the frontline of our media coverage, such as police brutality, racial disparity and immigration reform. Everything from political party preference to the increasing diversity of race and sexual orientation in each generation has an effect on the values portrayed in media. The value of each new generation effects how the media shapes itself to market to that general public. In order to understand the fluidity of the media, it is important to examine the change in the landscape of media, and how it has adapted to meet each generations needs. Though many generations feel that the developments of social media has caused a sort of "digital divide," many argue that media itself has caused this misconception through images that, "pokes fun at parents and grandparents trying to understand the means of Twitter and Facebook as young children sit playing games on their iPad (Warrington)." Warrington, with The Collegian, argues that though there may be a slight divide between generations, this can only be expected with such advances in our access to media, and the younger generation is always the first to adapt to new media. For instance, in the 1940's and 50's, many radio programs, such as The Lone Ranger and Tom Mix, were marketed towards the "Silent Generation," who had adapted to this technology much easier than their parents and grandparents (OTRCAT.com). ...
