Millennials (people ages 24-38) will make up half the workforce by 2022, with Generation Z not far behind. Learn about the cultures of creative and high-tech workplaces, apply these lessons to multigenerational organizations, and discover communication practices that will support sustainability in your business. Let’s embrace these characteristics to bring long-term benefits to Rotary.
10. Why Millennials and GenZ matter…
By 2026 Millennials and Generation Z
will make up 75% of the global
workforce.
11. So let’s get to know them…
Increasing education costs, paired with the expectation that
a 4-year degree is required to pursue professional careers,
puts many people at a disadvantage for 1-2 decades. We
hear about Millennial and Gen Z being disconnected from
community, living at home longer, starting families later --
rather than writing us off as malcontents or fickle, you should
remember that we’re likely still a decade away from paying
off our degree, and have limited options as a result.

12. So let’s get to know them…
I wish Boomers + Xers were talking to me about their past
struggles (that led to their current successes); sharing what
they wish they did, so that we may do it together. I want to
hear of their observations and their struggles of enacting
change; I want to be reassured of the beauty that's on the
other side. I wish they were talking about the change that
needs to happen in the systems we are all bound to, for the
betterment of all.

13. So let’s get to know them…
Growing up I was taught that success was found in a good
paycheck. The idea that knowledge must be earned has
been a block on finding a place in the world for me. We have
grown up in a connected world that shares information. I
learned woodworking, knitting, graphic design, and cooking
on YouTube. Websites dedicated to sharing knowledge and
skills are common. Sharing has become a part of
togetherness for our generation.

Editor's Notes
Leads to impact!
Less than 4% of Rotarians around the world are under 35
The bottom line to all of this – is that they are the future
Because they are the future of Rotary – notice not your rotary club – all of rotary
Need to think about making Rotarians not members to your club
Meet people where they are
Also speaking of bottom line – this will affect the bottom line dollar for you club for attracting and RETAINING new members.
If they leave you loose money.
But most importantly the people we are trying to impact
will also be intergenerational – so if we don’t include this new generation it will impact the impact of impact
How do we take what we learned from how we treat the people we serve and apply it to our peers?
Not just about gen diversity in membership but also leadership
In membership AND Leadership
3 Things to do from industry and what I learned
Meet people where they are
Example: core time
Partnerships
OPEN
U40 as an illustration of 3 things to do.
ADD in the questions from the U40 application:
What are you passionate about?
If you had a week to dedicate to service what would you do?
Add in stats for Portland Downtown Club
We need these new generations to help lead:
Example - Social Justice (Pearl) or DIE Committee
Story about Harassment announcement and how some were uncomfortable but more where appreciative of it
Return to three things to do as Rotarians – get specific “Try doing this….Go do this….”
Meet people where they are
Make Rotarians
this means you are going to have to partner with other clubs across
partnership with industry based organizations that don’t have a service component – young leadership
