WORK OFFICE SELF LEARNING ACTIVITY
1. Milk Plastic
In this engaging activity, students will create plastic from milk and vinegar, or natural
lemon juice. Students will learn about physical and chemical reactions and their
reversibility. This reaction involves household materials and can be used to demonstrate
environmentally friendly practices and renewable resources.
The method used in this activity to create milk plastic was widely used in the early 1900s
to create plastic for buttons, beads, and jewellery. Since then, plastic has been composed
from using petroleum products. In contrast to petroleum products, this plastic is able to
decompose and does not give off greenhouse gases. Milk plastic, or casein-made plastic,
can be considered a green renewable resource, as it is made from materials that are bio
degradable.
Objectives:
● Objectives:
- construct an argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling
can be reversed and some cannot,
- describe that energy and fuels are derived from natural resources and their uses
affect the environment,
- carry out an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances
results in new substances,
- describe that synthetic materials come from natural resources and impact society
SUBJECTS
● Chemistry, Foreign Languages
