Scenario of the geocaching outdoor game
Objectives:
- Getting the participants to know the rules of geocaching;
- encouraging a different perspective on the surroundings;
- broadening the knowledge about the cultural heritage of the region;
- alternative sightseeing around Tuławki.
Participants:
Children and youth
– age: 10 to 14 years old
Place:
Tuławki surroundings
Time:
5 hours per group
Working methods and techniques:
Working in groups with GPS and mobile devices, walking trip, outdoor game,
working with a map and a compass, brainstorming, discussion
The course of action:
- Explanation of what geocaching is and what are the rules of outdoor games.
- Searching for geocaches in the nearest area, competing in 5 groups –
Description of tasks:
Task A
1. Students had to determine the directions of the world using a compass and
write in the worksheet
2. The second part of this task was to orient the topographic map in the field.
Holding the map and a compass, students were to determine where the north
direction was and match the objects on the map with those in the field so that
they were in a straight line with each other. They also had to place the missing
element on the map.
3. Students also had to find at least two types of rocks that occur in Warmia and
Mazury: granite or limestone, conglomerate, clay.

Task B
Students were asked to read the location of the box with the task, using the QR
code reader app. To get to the box they had to use the Compass app. The task
was to decode anagrams of spring flowers by using a fractional cipher. Then
students had to convert the anagrams into spring flower names and write them
down on the worksheet.
Task C
Students were asked to identify deciduous trees. They could use color photos of
tree bark, descriptions of the bark and key structural features to help. Students
observed trees and labeled species using clues.
Task D
Students recorded a short story, but its subject was encrypted. To read the
instruction, mathematical operations had to be solved. Each participant had to
record at least one sentence on a voice recorder.
Effects
Through the workshop, children learned what geocaching is, how to look for
treasure and set up caches. Moreover, the participants of the project became
more familiar with the surroundings of Tuławki and explored some interesting
places. Students skillfully combined different fields of knowledge and culture.
They also honed their interpersonal skills.
