This document provides a layered assessment for the novel Bridge to Terabithia. It includes 3 layers or options for students to choose from. Layer 1 involves choosing vocabulary words from the novel and creating flashcards or a crossword puzzle. Layer 2 asks students to write a postcard from their perspective to a character in the novel, including details about setting and a key incident. Layer 3 gives two options - creating an illustrated description of an imaginary world, or writing an additional chapter as an alternate ending to the story.

1. Bridge to Terabithia—Layered Assessment
Layer 1: Vocabulary Choose one of the following options using the selected vocabulary from the novel.

Option 1:
Create a set of flashcards for the vocabulary words from the novel
Bridge to Terabithia. On the front of the note card, write the
vocabulary word. On the back of the note card, write the definition
of the word. Then, use the word in a sentence.

Create a crossword puzzle for the vocabulary words from the novel,
Bridge to Terabithia. Use the definition of each word as the “clues”
to your crossword puzzle. Each word must be used once. Include an
answer key to your puzzle.
Layer 2: Using Literary Elements (10 Points)
Postcard to a Character
Create a postcard for the novel following the directions below.
The postcard is written from you to a character in the novel
The stamp represents the setting
The address is to a specific character in the novel
Message includes one really important incident and 5 details
Some specific indication of your opinion of the book is included
Tack on a postscript (P.S.)
The picture side has an attractive drawing with the title of the book and the
author’s name.
Layer 3: Post-Reading Activities Choose one of the following options. (30 Points)
Option 1: Imaginary World
Bridge to Terabithia lets readers into an imaginary
world where anything is possible, and friendship
and imagination rule.
Your task is to create your own imaginary world.
Include an illustrated and colored picture of your
world—think of Jess’s artistic talent. It will also
include a written description of your world—think
of Leslie’s creative use of words and imagery.
Option 2: Alternate Ending
Write an additional chapter to Bridge to
Terabithia. How is Jess coping with the loss of
Leslie? Who is ruling Terabithia now? Does Jess
make new friends? What is happening in Jess’
family?
Be creative, and be sure to give your Chapter a
name. Chapter should be well-written and free
from grammatical and punctuation errors.
