2. I wanted the main product and the ancillary tasks to work
alongside each other in such a way that when someone
looked at one of the products they would relate them to the
other products, and therefore make them want to go and
watch the film. I hope that the use of a specific house style
and use of consistent film noir conventions would help relate
all the three products together to grab my target audience’s
attention and to make my target audience want to watch the
film.
3. I think that all three of my media products are effective. I
believe that they all complement each other. The main thing I
believe truly links them together is the use of the same font
on each of the products. I think as the font –Bellerose- is bold
and unusual and therefore will grab the audience’s attention
and therefore is effective marketing. This is because my target
audience will recognise the products due to this font and
therefore will create interest with the film and make the
target audience want to watch the film.
5. Another aspect I think links all three of my media
products together is the use of film noir conventions. The
main convention which is portrayed within all three
products is the introduction of the male protagonist. Not
only does this convey that he is the main character but it
also creates enigma around this character and therefore
draws the target audience into wanting to go and watch
the film to find out more about him. The use of the male
protagonist within all three products allowed me to
show many conventions of film noir. For example he is
always wearing 1950s clothing therefore setting the
genre of the film which is an important part, as genre
needed to be shown in each product, so if the target
audience had only seen the poster for example, they
would still be aware that the genre is film noir.
6. Another convention I think ties all three products together is
the use of the gun. The gun is iconic in all three products and
creates enigma. This is because in the magazine front cover
image, the male protagonist is holding the gun suggesting that
he has power, however within the poster image the femme
fatale character is holding the gun, making the audience
wonder why the power role has reversed. This is also shown
within the trailer as the femme fatale picks up the gun and the
male protagonist searches for his gun but cannot find it. I
think this draws the audience’s attention as it suggests
tension and danger between the characters and therefore
makes the target audience want to watch the film and find out
more. . It also gives clues to the Todorovian narrative and
further meets audience expectations and gives strong
connotations associated with the genre.
8. Another important aspect that links the three together is the
use of black and white image. As it is rare in modern films for
black and white image to be used it will make my film stand
out and therefore is an effective marketing tool as whenever
my target audience see the three products they will
automatically relate them due to all of the images being black
and white. It also once again reminds the target audience of
the genre of the film.
9. The use of social networks links the products together also. I
included Twitter and Facebook links within the trailer and the
poster. This will grab the audience’s attention as I know from
audience research that they liked when they could access
exclusive film information. Hopefully by including this it will
effectively reach my target audience as it provides free
advertising as well as word of mouth advertising.
11. Each of these aspects helped me to effectively reach and
address my target audience. I found this out through audience
feedback for each of my products. In all of the feedback I
received there was mention of how effective the font was as it
intrigued and interested the audience. One of our target
audience members said “I like the style of the font, it’s really
interesting and draws me into the poster” Therefore I believe
that the font is very effective in the way it addresses the
target audience as obviously it grabs their attention which is
what I want because I want them to want to watch the film.
12. Within all of my audience feedback I discovered that the
audience all enjoyed the use of film noir conventions as it was
mentioned several times. A few examples include; “"It was
good. It immediately set up its genre through the accurate use
of conventions and shared enough to establish plot.”; “It
makes good use of Film Noir conventions”. Obviously by using
several conventions the three products have successfully
established the films genre and grabbed the audience’s
attention as obviously they have been intrigued enough by
the products to want to look at them. This proves that the
combination of my main product and ancillary tasks are
effective as they have reached my target audience and
grabbed their attention.
13. There was also a lot of reference to the use of black and white
image within my audience feedback. For example “The use of
the black and white cinematography gives the trailer a real
Film Noir feel” My three products have achieved what I
wanted them to do by grabbing the audience’s attention
through use of black and white image therefore making them
effective in the way they have grabbed my audience’s
attention.
14. I think one of the main things that helped effectively address and
reach the target audience was the use of social networking sites.
This is because a large percentage of our target audience use social
networking sites and enjoys using them to find out more about
films. I felt like it was crucial that I included them within the three
products to effectively address and reach the target audience.
Before improving my trailer I posted my trailer on Facebook to
receive audience feedback and one of the members said “Put
follows us on Twitter and like us on Facebook in small below the
coming soon sign at the end of the trailer.” I acted upon this and has
effectively helped to reach more of the target audience as Facebook
is such a large social networking site many people will see it.
15. The poster, magazine and trailer will all market the film differently.
Firstly the poster will be placed in cinemas, buses and billboards.
These are all places that the poster will be seen by a variety of a lot
of different people. I believe the most effective out of the places the
poster will be placed will be the cinema as the people who visit the
cinema obviously enjoy watching films and therefore will be
intrigued to watch my film. Secondly the Magazine will be placed in
a selection of shops that sell magazines and will be sold on apps
such as Kobo and be available on kindle as it has become
increasingly popular to download magazines rather than buying
paper copies. I believe this will effectively reach out to a lot of my
target audience as the people who buy Empire are interested in
films. Thirdly, the trailer will be shown on TV, at cinemas and on
social networking sites such as YouTube and Facebook. By using all
of these methods I should hopefully be able to effectively reach and
address all of the target audience.
16. I believe all of these methods will effectively preform different
functions in the overall marketing of the film. Firstly the
Poster has the function of grabbing a wide range of people’s
attention as it will be shown in several areas. The poster is
likely going to be most effective in the cinema as many of my
target audience do visit the cinema and therefore will see the
poster and this will hopefully make them want to watch the
film. I believe the main function of the poster is about creating
enigma as it only gives away who the characters are and the
genre of the film therefore will most likely be released first to
grab the audience’s attention and to create enigma.
17. The trailer will be released at a similar time to when the
poster is released as once the audience see the poster they
will immediately want to find out more. The main function of
the trailer is to reveal more about the film, create enigma and
to fully grab the audience’s attention. As the trailer will be
shown on TV and be on social networking sites this will reach
out to a large amount of the target audience. The trailer will
be specifically placed so it reaches as much as our target
audience as possible for example it may be a suggested link
beside a YouTube video of a similar film and the trailer will be
shown on TV channels that cater to our target audience eg.
Film4. The trailer will perform more specific functions than
those of the poster.
18. Finally the magazine will be released close to when the actual film
is released this will be because the poster and trailer would have
gained the majority of our target audiences attention and the
release of a magazine featuring the film as a main article will
inform the target audience about the film more and will excite them
for the release of the film. As the magazine is Empire a lot of the
target audience will buy this magazine as they have an interest in
films, therefore this part of marketing will be specific to our target
audience compared to the poster that would have been seen by
many people who probably wouldn’t be interested in going to see
the film. Over all I believe that the combination of my main product
and ancillary tasks perform different functions of the overall
marketing of the film as well as effectively reaching and addressing
the target audience.
