Editor's Notes
Good afternoon. My name is EmikaAso. I am 18 years old and I am Japanese but I was born in Thailand. I have been at ISB since 9th grade. After graduation, I will enter university in Japan and I am interested in studying Japanese and English literature. My e-portfolio about my high school learning experience and it is about how I gain knowledge which is influenced by my character.
In the senior seminar, I learn the ways of knowing: language, perception, emotion, and reason. I will use emotion to explain learning events and experiences from my high school years.
This is woman’s choir class that I took in grade 9-11. Emotion plays a key part in choir. I learned that if I’m singing from the heart and understand the emotion of the song, it will add a deeper emotion to the performance for the audience. For example, in my choir concert, I sing without smiling with a quiet voice in a sad song and in a happy song I sing with a cheerful voice and I smile. I think choir is fun and enjoyable, so I have positive emotion about it so I will work hard. I worried about pronunciation and English words when I have choir practice. However, my emotion that I love to sing creates my confidence to express my feelings and sing in front of the people at choir concert. Because of my positive emotions, I keep taking choir class for 3 years. Therefore, emotion creates a pleasurable experience in high school life for me and I learned that positive emotion encourages me to try hard to do my best.
My emotion also had a huge influence on my learning and performance in Math class. I am not good at math, so the feeling of hate for math makes me think math is not important in life and so I give up taking another math class in senior year. I think I might enjoy math if there were no tests because math can challenge my mind. I think if I study math for math, I won’t hate math. However, no tests is impossible so I feel hate for math so I have no interest to try hard to study math moreand then I get a low grade on the test and quizzes. The low scores cause more hate for math. Finally, these negative emotion make me to give up learning mathTherefore, through my experiences, emotion is an impediment for me to learning or performance and that emotion can have negative effects on learning.
Positive Emotion Choir: fun and enjoy work hard confidence Negative EmotionMath class: high stress hate Give up
Since I know theses things about myself I need to balance the ways of knowing. If positive emotion is strong, life will be successful for me because I enjoy it. If negative emotion is strong, I will hate something and give up trying it. From my learning experience at ISB and learning about Ways of Knowing in senior seminar, I think gaining knowledge is fun. I do not enjoy tests because I have to study for good grades, not for knowledge. If I can keep positive emotion about learning, I will enjoy gaining knowledge, but if not, then I will give up. This is my character, but I think if I use perception, language and reason with emotion, I can keep a more positive emotion for learning.
