It was on the sunny 15th of February when I arrived at school in my green
shirt, ready for the Annual Greytown School Swimming Sports.
The morning was a buzz of children in their coloured shirts, my friends
talking about how keen they were to start the awesome day ahead of us
and people practicing and trying to remember their chants.
Soon after school started, all the children that would be competing in the
swimming lined up in our houses, Green, Yellow, Blue and Red. and
house leaders trying to keep them quiet for extra hose points. Mr Preston
started to tell us the expectations: “ It is a hot day everyone, so I hope
everyone has got lots of Sunblock on and no-one should have forgot their
hat.”
As the whole school headed out the gates, there was a roar of all the
Houses chanting energetically, house leaders shouting to their houses to
pick up the volume and happy but nervous kids chatting about how
thrilled they were that the day had finally come.
Once we had arrived at the Greytown pool, everyone was rushing to get to
their house spots. We all sat in our seats and listened to what Mr Mackay
had to announce. “ Welcome to Greytown Schools Swimming Sports”, He
had said.
In every race we competed in, we had to wait beside the pool for our
names to be read out and what lane we were to race in. “ Ella Major, Lane
three,” said Belinda the Marshaler, so I headed to my lane ready to start
2. the race. In the pool we all dove, swimming to the finish line. I remember
finishing the race, Feeling that exhilarating feeling.
The rest of the day went really fast. Getting in and out of the pool, getting
congratulated by my house mates for doing well.
Arriving home that night was a great feeling, knowing that I had done my
best and tried my hardest.
