Vertigo Films is a leading British independent film production and distribution company that has distributed low-budget films since 2002. The document discusses how Vertigo Films distributed the low-budget film Monsters in 2010, which is a relevant example because it also used unknown actors and was set in a natural location with nothing fancy. Due to its focus on low-budget films and status as a British company, the document argues that Vertigo Films would be a suitable distributor for the media producer's opening sequence.

Vertigo Films Distributes Low-Budget Thrillers
1. Evaluation 3
Vertigo Films
I believe that Vertigo Films is a company
which would distribute my media product
mainly because they do low budget films and
it is also a British film company. Vertigo Films
is a British film production and film
distribution company based in London.
2. What a Distributor does.
The film distributor can play a huge factor in a film's success.
Distributors control the marketing and circulation of movies in theatre's and also home viewing.
Distributors decide how much the film should be advertised (TV commercials, internet, magazine,
posters, trailers, special promos, etc.) - this is crucial for the film because it gets the word out there
and gets people interested in it. The distributor usually arranges industry screenings for exhibitors,
and uses other marketing techniques that will make the exhibitor believe they will profit financially
by showing the film.
Film distributors are more important for small, independent films because they are less known and
usually don’t contain the big name stars that studio pictures do therefore it is crucial for the word to
get out on them. This is why film festivals like Sundance are so important because that is where these
films are bought by distributors.
3. Vertigo Films is the leading British Independent film production
and distribution company Since being founded in 2002 by producer
Allan Niblo and James Richardson, the company has produced 24
films and distributed a further 30. Vertigo's joint CEO's are also
Rupert Preston and Nick Love. Vertigo has had a film in the top
five most successful British Independent films of the year: in 2010
StreetDance 3D was number one and in 2011, Horrid Henry the
Movie was fourth. Vertigo's initial production and distribution focus was
on the previously untapped 'lads' market and its first film, The Football
Factory, became one of the most successful British Independent films when
it was released on DVD in 2004.
4. Monsters
Monsters was directed by Gareth Edwards and produced by James
Richardson and Allan Niblo.
Monsters is a good example to use as it is a blow budget film and it
relates really well to my opening sequence. It was distributed by
vertigo Films, Also the actors used in Monsters are not well known
actors they are ordinary people and a couple.
This relates well to my opening sequence because they are also
ordinary people used who can relate to the audience and audience
are able to relate to them. It is setting in a natural place there is
nothing fancy. There fore I think that Vertigo Films would
distribute my opening sequence.
5. Evaluation 4&5
Target Audience
My opening sequence is mainly aimed at people around the age of 15-23 male or female, this is
due to the character in film which is young, and has typical teenage problems and arguments
with her boyfriend, therefore this age group would be able to relate to that character really well
and feel any sympathy for her death and know what she is going through. This opening
sequence is also to open peoples eyes about being out late at night on their own in unknown
place.
The characters I used are them self around the age of 16 reason for using this age group is
because the audience can relate to their own age group. A male and female were used because
this shows the audience what females and males go through so not only women would be able
to relate to the female but so will the males, as males and females come in contact a lot at this
particular age group.
My target audience
6. Classification 15
Reason main reason or my opening sequence being a 15 is because it
contains a lot of strong violence, may contain use of weapons later on
in the film. Also there may also be scenes of sexual nudity and sexual
references which wouldn’t be acceptable for any under 15 year olds.
Therefore I decided to best stick to a 15 as it’s a little to violent
sexual, and has discriminatory behaviour further on in the film.
The other reason is because the plots of film mainly relates to this
age group and are able to have a better understanding of the film and
relate to it a lot better than another age group would.
my opening sequence is a 15 rating classification, because it includes:
• strong violence
• frequent strong language (eg ‘f***’).
• portrayals of sexual activity
• strong verbal references to sex
• sexual nudity
• brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
• discriminatory language or behaviour
• drug taking
7. Audience FeedbackAfter I finished my opening sequence I shows it to a few people who are 15 -18 to get some feedback about what they think works
well in the opening sequence.
• Seannon Chambers 16: I really like the pacing of the girl walking through the woods it adds a lot of mystery and seems like
her heart may be racing.
• Natalia Smith 15: I really like the setting of the film because it’s outside and you don’t know what will happen because
anything could happen it really adds a lot of suspense to the film.
• Kyle Pitchman 17: When the girl all of a sudden stops works well but I think there could have been a more dramatic and
longer pause for me to engage a bit more, but when the guy appears behind and disappears is quiet mysterious.
• Adam Moorhouse 18: I really loved the ending because it was all of a sudden and made me jump quiet a bit, because I
wasn’t expecting it I knew something would happen but I didn’t know what, I think that worked really well because i didn’t
give to much away. It also left me hanging because I wanted to know what happened to the Girl!.
This feedback was very helpful because it showed me what worked well and what didn’t but the majority of the feedback was good, it
shows me that I’ve given the right symbols of it being a thriller. The audience was feedback was b=very useful because I was able to
improve it and make it more enjoyable for them to meet their expectations therefore it took on kyles idea and made the pause
slightly longer.
