2. How does the X Factor use Convergence to
reach a potential audience?
• Producers of the tv show use the internet and social media to reach a
potential audience. For example, The X Factor have Twitter and
Instagram profiles. The X Factor also has a website and an app, you
can use both to vote for the contestants each week, watch videos and
play games.
3. Applying Jenkins and Livingstone's’ Theories
• Livingstone’s theory is that soon all of our Media’s will run through the
same Hardware devices. This to some extent is true because you can access
all the things I was speaking about through one device, a phone.
• Jenkins argues against this, calling it The Black Box Fallacy. He believes that
it is wrong because it is based on the old idea of Convergence that all media
devices would converge in to one central device. Instead, what we see now
is the hardware diverging whilst the content converges.
4. Above and Below The Line means of
advertising used by The X Factor producers.
• Above the line would be the app or website. They are there but you
don’t have to use them if you don’t want to.
• Below the line would be adverts for The X Factor social media on the
apps you are on.
