Pediatric Patient Traits
Central Traits of Pediatric Researchers Today, millions of people worldwide depend on medications
for their everyday health and well–being. Children are a small portion of the population and tend to
be healthy which makes it particularly devastating when a small child is ill. Pediatric product
development studies tend to be small due to the limited number of children available for clinical trial
participation and the strict governmental regulations placed upon them (U.S. Food and Drug
Administration, 2012). Nevertheless, drug testing, research, and use continues to rise due to the
drive to help and improve the lives of ill children (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2012).
However, very little attention is being paid to the doctors behind ... Show more content on

Dr. Folkman posted important research questions inside his lab to remind researchers to focus on the
biggest problems facing the patients(The Tobin Project, n.d.). His focus on "burning questions" was
rooted in a resolve that his lab's research would bring real benefits to the patients. People were
always the focus of his energies (Academy of Achievement, 2010). Folkman would regularly bring
patients into the lab to introduce researchers to individuals who had benefited from the lab's
previous discoveries and who might one day be helped by the next generation of treatments. Even as
a full–time researcher, he spent innumerable hours in the evenings on calls with cancer patients from
all over the world who sought his reassuring guidance and support (The Tobin Project, n.d.). He
shares this core of commitment to his patients with another, more modern pediatric

Life Saving Strategies for Food Allergies
Living with food allergies is a full–time job as it is. Between reading ingredients, calling food
companies, worrying about the cross contamination of what others are eating near you, to the what
ifs, it can be rather over–whelming at times. Should it not be easier, since food allergies are readily
growing? It should be mandatory for school workers, all teachers, nurses, and caregivers to notice
signs of anaphylaxis and when to give ephedrine. One of the easiest ways to make this possible
would be to teach these life skills just as one would learn CPR. In order to make sure this is a
widespread knowledge, it would be needed to have a daycare. It is very important for a caregiver to
know what to look for and what anaphylaxis looks like. Anaphylaxis is not always noticeable, or just
the throat closing up. Even though this topic has been written about many times over, I hope to give
readers another perspective, and hopefully change some protocols, from a mother who has food
allergies and is taking care of her children with food allergies. SAVING KIDS FROM FOOD

Informative Essay On Peanut Allergy
Ever since I was a child, all I remember is having a peanut allergy. I have been taught not to go near
peanuts, and to tell people to not bring peanuts anywhere near me. I have always had this constant
reminder that I will most likely never get to taste peanut butter and that I will always be reminded to
not go near peanuts. Peanut allergies have always been thought incurable, but there is new hope for
the future.
In life I have always been plagued with questions about my peanut allergy. Every single person has
their own ideas on what would happen to a person with a peanut allergy and I am here to set things
straight. I cannot say how many times I am asked, "what happens when you touch a peanut?" When
a person with a peanut allergy comes in contact with peanuts, they do not immediately puff up like
they do in "Meet the Robinsons," nor do they swell to almost triple their size. The reaction, called
Anaphylaxis, could happen in minutes or it could take up to four hours for the reaction to appear
(Murphy). I hear so many stories about how peanut oil will start a reaction, and that is only true in
some cases. Pure refined peanut oil cannot cause a reaction to a person with a peanut allergy, the
proteins in the peanuts that cause the reaction have been stripped away (Murphy). I am always
warned whenever ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wade Yang, assistant professor in food science and human nutrition at the University of Florida, has
found a way to reduce the amount of peanut allergens using a special light wave that is used to get
rid of body hair. The process is called PLT, pulsed light technology, and it can eliminate up to 80
percent of the allergens making peanuts safe for 95 percent of the people who eat these peanuts.
Yang has other ideas he could use this for, but he is currently going through the process of testing to
see if there are any negative results on humans and animals

Tuberculosis : Causes And Treatment Of Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis, also known by the abbreviation "TB", is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the
bacteria usually attacks the lungs, but tuberculosis bacteria can attack any part of the body such as
the kidney, spine, and brain. Although tuberculosis has not been a major concern in recent years; the
disease is now increasing and there are now multiple drug resistant strains that have emerged that
many believe may be a massive risk to society with the necessity of routine screenings and new
vaccines.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the cause of tuberculosis in humans. The only known carrier of this
particular bacterium is humans. Mycobacterium bovis is the etiologic agent of TUBERCULOSIS
that's found in cows but found rarely in humans, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When TUBERCULOSIS occurs outside your lungs, signs and symptoms vary according to the
organs involved. For example, tuberculosis of the spine may give you back pain, and tuberculosis in
your kidneys might cause blood in your urine. The Department of Respiratory Medicine and
Allergology at Aarhus University Hospital has released a study on an interferon–gamma release
assay test that has performed well in routine screening for tuberculosis. A positive interferon–
gamma release assay, also known as IGRA, is regarded proof of latent mycobacterium tuberculosis
infection. They concluded an evaluation of the IGRA test "T–SPOT:T3" to test its performance
during clinical routine use by analyzing the positivity rate and odds, as well as the effect of the
season and sensitivity. The T–Spot. tuberculosis performs well in routine screening prior to TNFα
treatment as well as in control investigation procedures. Furthermore, it is a useful diagnostic aid in
low–incidence settings. Test performance is influenced by the age of the patient and by the season of
the year in which the test is performed, but mostly in terms of the occurrence of inconclusive results.
In majority of inclusive cases, a subsequent test can provide a conclusive result. One false negative
result was recorded. Therefore, a negative T–SPOT. Tuberculosis should never overrule the
judgment of

Essential Travel Tips for People with Pre-existing Conditions
"See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories, "quotes the famous
author, Ray Bradbury, in his influential book Fahrenheit 451.
However, if you are among the people who have pre–existing medical conditions, such as asthma
and allergies, then you may have trepidations about travelling abroad. Although it's only natural to
fear for your safety, your condition should not stop you from pursuing your dreams of travelling the
world.
To help set your mind at ease and enjoy your travel abroad, read these essential travel tips for people
with pre–existing medical conditions.
Before Your Travel
Your medical condition should not keep you from travelling abroad. All you need to know is learn
and understand how your body reacts to certain food intake and environmental condition. Before
your planned trip, make sure that your asthma or allergy is controlled. You also need to visit your
physician and ask for advice to help you prepare a possible change of treatment that co–relate to
your travel destination. Additionally, follow the schedule of your usual treatment even while you are
travelling and ask your doctor for the DCI (common internal name) of the medicine that you are
taking. By doing this, you will have an easier time to look for it in your travel destination, in case
you need it.
Furthermore, don't forget to bring a first aid kit that contains your prescribed medicines (e.g.,
antihistamines, corticoids, and asthma sprays). If

Reflection Paper About Practicum
The practicum took place in Fudacion Hogar de Cuenca. Fudacion Hogar is a clinic that has been in
existence for 7 years. Doing a practicum in this clinic does help the students who want to pursue a
career in medical field to see how medicine is practiced in other countries. This clinic allowed 12 of
us to be stationed in different departments that they have such as urology, general medicine,
laboratory, ophthalmology, allergology, physical therapy, pharmacy, dermatology, dentistry,
traumatology, and hospital. Every week, we were given a schedule that showed us where we were
supposed to be during the week. The schedule was well organized because each one of us got the
opportunity to observe various department of the clinic. As for me, I was able to observe doctors in
some of the departments such as general medicine, physical therapy, pharmacy, ophthalmology,
laboratory, allergology, dermatology, dentistry, and hospital. In addition, I was able to learn some
materials of each department.
For example, when I was stationed to general medicine, I was able to observe how the general
medicine doctor practiced his profession. This doctor sees all kinds of patients from having a
common cold to herpes zoster. First, when a patient comes, he asked them the reason for their
consultation, then he performed an examination. This exam ... Show more content on

Why We Shouldn T Peanuts Be Banned From Schools
Have you ever seen a story on the news of a student that died from a peanut allergy? Many stories of
peanut reactions in schools prove that they should be banned because of unnecessary deaths. This is
a controversial topic, some people agree with banning peanuts and believe they should be banned
from schools. Others, think that peanuts should not be banned. I claim peanuts should be banned
because kids die every year in schools because of these allergies, even after lunch kids could have a
reaction, and because kids should be able to feel safe in school. One reason that schools should ban
peanut butter is because students die every year in school because of cross contamination. If you do
not know what cross contamination is, it is when a food product that one person is allergic to
touches another product and then carries bacteria from that allergen–related food. One example, is a
7–year–old girl named Ammaria Johnson who died in Virginia during recess from an allergic
reaction. The girl was not given Benadryl or the EpiPen injection to reverse the symptoms so by the
time the ambulance arrived the little first grader was already in cardiac arrest. According to Katie ...

Yes, peanut butter is a convenient lunch, a very popular food, and the kids with the allergy should be
responsible for themselves. But, the people without the allergy should not have to constantly worry
about the kids with the allergy. They should not have to worry because the kids with the allergy
should know what to eat and what not to eat. Also, the kids with allergies should be aware of their
surrounding. However, the kids should not always have to be paranoid about their surroundings.
Life would not be enjoyable because the kids would constantly be making sure that nobody who ate
nuts is touching their things or sharing with them. Kids with nut allergies should be able to feel safe

Allergen Labeling
On the back of every processed food item, there is a label which millions of Americans depend upon
to make sure that the contents of the food will not trigger an allergic reaction. Often, these labels are
small, hidden, and hard to read, which can result in harmful situations that can land the consumer of
the product in the hospital with severe a reaction. ←look at the end of this sentence sorry can't
comment I'm not at home right now The labels in question are called allergen labels, and they can
have an extreme effect on consumers with food allergies. Although numerous laws require all

As many people can tell, food allergies have gone from nearly non–existent to such an amount that
marketing, shopping, and eating have been changed to accommodate the different needs of the
population. Everyday choices for this group of people shape the needs of our country: an
improvement for allergen labelling. Are the small inscripted labels cutting it for the people of
America right now? Is society doing enough to prevent an accident from occurring? Or does it all
depend on the individuals themselves? Answering these questions are easy: it all comes down to
labelling. A sticker makes all the difference in their world and although so many established
practices have been made to protect people against receiving an allergen, it is a never ending
problem. Even when one food item causes one person to have a reaction, it can affect the company,
family, and the people around them. America is a very developed country, with some of the best
hospitals in the world, but actions must be taken to help this potential danger sitting on a shelf. Food
allergies are so much more common than one may think, and allergens are everywhere in our world.
Taking steps to secure these people will help not only the people with us today, but the generations
to come. Improving allergen labeling is one step towards progress, but once it is put into action,
more food will become safe to eat for citizens with allergies once

Ask Before Feeding Essay
Next Time Ask Before Feeding
Did you know that food allergies are most common among babies and small young children?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies are predicted to distress
four to six percent of children. Food allergy reactions can range in severity, such as a simple rash to
death. Children from birth to five years old have higher rates of food allergies than children over the
age of five. Food allergies are not a thought if your child does not have them. However, before you
feed someone else child, ask the parent is it ok for them to eat something first.

Why Is Tylenol The Culprit?
For several years now, researchers have blamed common analgesics (pain relievers) and antipyretics
(fever reducers), mainly acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), as potential causes
of asthma symptoms and new–onset asthma. However, more recent evidence seems to vindicate
pain medicine. Here's 5 things to know. Tylenol becomes the leading pain medicine. In 1980,
Aspirin was linked with Reye's Syndrome. This was also the same year that Tylenol was marketed
as the pain reliever hospitals choose first. This quickly turned out to be a huge boon for the makers
of Tylenol, whose sales skyrocketed over the ensuing years. Later in the decade ibuprofen became
available as an alternative over the counter pain medicine and fever ... Show more content on

Study after study continued to confirm suspicions that common pain relievers were guilty. (3–4)
Most studies only involve Tylenol. Keep in mind, that since acetaminophen is the most commonly
used pain reliever and fever reducer, it's the one most often used in studies. It is generally considered
a weaker pain reliever to ibuprofen, although it is more widely used because it's better tolerated than
Aspirin and ibuprofen, which have both been shown to irritate the stomach. (3) Tylenol seems to
lower glutathione levels. A theory arose that taking Tylenol reduces glutathione. It's a protein
produced by many cells in your body, but it's also an antioxidant that prevents free radicals from
causing oxidative stress, which can cause damage to cells, such as cells lining airways. Various
studies have linked this with both asthma symptoms and new–onset asthma. Tylenol mostly affects
glutathione levels in the liver, although it has also been shown to lower glutathione levels in the
lungs. However, there are also other things that might lower glutathione. (4–6) The suspicions
inspired concerns. Parents and physicians alike often wondered if they should even recommend
these common pain relievers and fever reducers for children. Despite the link, the makers of Tylenol
continued to insist their product was safe for adults and children of all ages. Many researchers
continued to agree with the makers of Tylenol, noting that the link may simply be a

Food Allergies And Food Intolerances
Do you remember your days of trying to fit into the typical student stereotype during school just to
be accepted by your classmates? Now imagine yourself with a life–threatening condition that must
be treated immediately and left untreated could lead to death within a matter of minutes. Children
with food allergies are constantly at risk for a life–threatening reaction. "Food allergies are caused
by abnormal immunological responses to a food, whereas food intolerances have a non–
immunological basis" (Begen). Food allergies and intolerances are classified as a food
hypersensitivity where "individuals who suffer reproducible, objective symptoms whenever they eat
a particular food" (Begen). The symptoms of food allergies and intolerances differ by their severity.
Food allergy symptoms include: anaphylaxis, digestive problems, hives, rashes, and swollen airways
to the point of not being able to breathe. Food intolerance symptoms are generally delayed, in
comparison to food allergies, and include the following: diarrhea, indigestion, nausea, vomiting,
cramping and pain in the abdomen. Food allergies can affect a person's everyday life, more than you
can think. Besides the physical aspect, there is a social aspect to having a food allergy. It can affect a
person through having to eat different foods, sit at a different table, or being excluded from an event
due to the severity of their allergy. This can be very detrimental towards school aged children

kindergarten through eighth grade. The school encompasses three educational buildings, with three
additional resource buildings including a gymnasium, science lab, and library. The Elisabeth
Morrow School sits on a 14–acre campus and provides a unique educational experience for over 400
students. The Elisabeth Morrow School healthcare services are provided by two licensed Registered
Nurses, with a combined 30 years of experience in school nursing.
Over the past decade, the prevalence and multitude of food allergies in students registering for
kindergarten has risen substantially. The number of students enrolled in the schools kindergarten
program has remained constant, however, the number of kindergarten students with severe food
allergies continues to increase. The growing prevalence of severe food allergies in the kindergarten
population requires a collaborative approach involving the school nurse, parents, and all members of
the learning community (Schoessler & White, 2014).
The increased prevalence of food allergies in school children, the rapid onset of symptoms and
potentially fatal nature of anaphylaxis, combined with the high risk of accidental exposure warrants
significant action.

The Importance Of Food Allergies
Minimizing allergic reactions in the school setting
Introduction
Allergies continues to be a parental concern in the educational milieu. Food allergies are defined as
an immunologic reaction which results from ingesting a specific food or food additive (Kyle, T.
2016). Throughout the time that children spend in schools they can experience or develop new food
allergies. Common allergens include, milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish. Allergic
reactions usually occur a few minutes after exposure, but some can occur up to two hours after
exposure (Kyle, T. 2016). Once children reach pre–school and school age they being to spend a
tremendous amount away from home. Parents topically show growing concerns regarding their
children's safety and health while they are in these school settings. School nurses are responsible for
all children health care including the children with food allergies. It is critical that school nurses
know how properly manage and prevent food allergies. The question being asked is how can school
nurses minimize the incidents of allergic reactions caused by food? Search of evidence
The first article named Food Allergy Education for School Nurses: A Needs Assessment Survey by

My Food Allergies

know how to turn it down because you didn't want to offend them? That's really unfortunate for you
because I'm guessing you had to suffer through the horrid taste and finish the entire dish. But for me,
I have a secret answer so that I never have to eat anything I don't want. With one sentence
containing one magic word, I can turn down any nasty–looking meal. Want to know what it is?
"Allergies." That is my magic word. All I have to say is, "I probably can't eat that because I have
egg, peanut, and treenut allergies but thank you so much for the thought!" Just like that, I am safe
from the horror with no blood on my hands because the person who made the food is too scared that

allergies are part of my identity and part of what makes me, me. They have transformed me from
feelings of insecurity to achieving self actualization and owning my differences. If somebody didn't

The Effects Of Climate Change On Asthma
The Effects Of Climate Change On Asthma
As a result of the rapid rate of industrialization in our society today, the environment as well as the
existence of certain living things, is threatened. The rising of industries, as well as the use of certain
machines like cars, has led to the release of certain air borne toxins which are responsible for the
gradual change in climate. Air toxins, change in climate, as well as many other factors, work
together and breathing effectively is made difficult in the process. The question most times is, "Does
the gradual change in climate have an effect on the prevalence of asthma as well as other respiratory
diseases?". While some feel asthma is a hereditary disease, all sources agree with the fact that

There has been a decline in the quality of air we breathe in over time, and this can be blamed on the
rapid industrialization and urbanization of cities. Rapid urbanization and industrialization has lead to
the use of more sophisticated machines such as vehicles, which produce gases, which are majorly
responsible for the gradual change in climate. Asthmatic flare ups can be as a result of 'the exposure
to tobacco smoke, vehicular emissions, ozone, plant pollens, mold spores, skin cells and hair from
common mammalian pets, waste of dust mites and cockroaches, and cold air' (Adkinson et al.,
2007). Although asthma is said to be more common in urban areas, cases of asthma in rural areas are
becoming more common as a result of rapid industrialization. The article states that in coming years,
respiratory health is expected to grow even worse "because of interaction between heavier pollen

Food Allergies : A Growing Problem
food allergies are a growing problem, especially in the U.S. in light of the last couple of years, there
are so many allergies that sometimes you won't be able to keep track of them all and new allergies
are popping up– everyday. Food allergies can go either way when it comes to how it can affect a
person's life because it restricts consumption of certain foods that almost every American eats on a
regular basis like eggs or milk for instance those are common ingredients in almost every food we
eat today. Reactions to the food allergy is also another problematic thing that comes with it, the
reactions and symptoms vary from person to person, sometimes it may be simple and small fixable
reactions such as vomiting and or rash, nausea along with a lot of other smaller reactions, but they
can also become life threatening very quickly and suddenly and in some cases can even cause death.
This shows how serious food allergies can be and unfortunately food allergies can't be cured,
although they can be treated in early childhood to try and avoid the allergy from even occurring in
the body. In some extreme cases there are medications to stop or stall the reactions coming from
ingesting the food you're allergic to, such as an Epipen or some other form of medication, but they
should only be used in extreme cases with extreme life threatening reactions. Scientists today are
still researching possible cures and treatments for people with these forms of allergies, but it's still in

Shellfish Allergies
Shellfish can cause an Allergic Reaction. These reactions can be caused by certain species of
shellfish or all shellfish, you can be allergic to fish and not shellfish or vice versa. In the following
pages I will cover shellfish allergies, shellfish species, the types of reactions and the treatment
options as well as coping with the allergy.
What is a Shellfish Allergy?
A shellfish allergy is an allergic reaction caused by contact with or consumption of shellfish. An
allergic reaction to shellfish can range from mildly uncomfortable to life threatening and while some
food allergies diminish or go away with age a shellfish allergy is typically a lifelong allergy that can

A Shellfish Allergy can affect your life in many ways. When going out to eat the sufferer must be
aware of their surroundings if they are sensitive to the proteins in steam from cooking shellfish as
well as cross contamination. Avoiding all contact is the best way to avoid a reaction. According to
FAAN,
There appears to be no cross–reactivity between fish and shellfish, but an individual can be allergic
to both. Fish– and shellfish–allergic individuals should avoid touching fish or shellfish, going to a
fish market, and being in an area where fish or shellfish are being cooked. Fish and shellfish protein
can become airborne in the steam released during cooking and can cause an allergic reaction....To
avoid seafood allergic reactions avoid eating in seafood restaurants if you are allergic to fish or
shellfish, even if you intend to order a meat or poultry dish. The chance of cross–contact between
the food makes these restaurants high–risk places (The food allergy &, anaphylaxis network;
nonprofit food allergy network cautions people with seafood allergies., 2005)

Taking a Look at Food Allergies
Food, food is something that we as human beings live off of. But not everybody is as fortunate as
others, nowadays food allergies occur in 1 out of every 13 children. This indicates fifteen plus
million people have food allergies. This epidemic poses a threat to many citizens that live with food
allergies because of the incorrect labeling, distribution and safety of food products. The research
provided is to show one, what food allergies are and how they affect daily life of those who live
with food allergies. Food allergies are extremely important and educating people about food
allergies will hopefully quick start the progress to find a cure.
Food allergies have been reported but not looked into until 1976, when the public became aware of
the immune response to certain foods. The data collected showed that certain food s caused
reactions in people, which provoked further research on such topics. Food allergy awareness came
about in 1976 through newspapers and novels, because of reported civilians dying from ingesting
food that they were allergic too. A huge propaganda movement took place worldwide to show the
dangers of food allergies but was shortly subsided. The first Epi–Pen was launched and registered in
the United States in 1980; this was an amazing new start because every three minutes, a food allergy
reaction sends someone to the emergency department ("Food Allergy Facts and Statistics – FAAN").
What exactly are food allergies, food allergies are a result of the

Peanut Allergies And Food Allergies
Introduction:
According to Food Allergy Research and Education, peanut allergies are known to be one of the
most common food allergies in children and adults. These allergies cause allergic reactions that can
be severe and potentially fatal to those allergic to peanuts. Studies have indicated that approximately
20 percent of children eventually outgrow their peanut allergy. It is important to know the
distinction between peanuts and tree nuts, such as, almonds, cashews and walnuts. Being allergic to
peanuts does not impose a greater chance to tree nut allergies; however, an estimated 25–40 percent
who have peanut allergies are also allergic to tree nuts (FARE, 2015). Peanut allergies have been on
the rise in children. A FARE–funded study has determined that the number of children in the United
States that have peanut allergies has tripled between 1997 and 2008.
Purpose:
The purpose of this study is to create a treatment plan to reduce the amount of children who suffer
from peanut allergies and also come up with a method to avoid a reaction if exposed to peanuts in
the early years of a child's life. In addition, it would be interesting to observe the frequency in which
a peanut allergy may reoccur. Receiving the necessary funds will help in discovering the best and
appropriate solution to treat peanut allergies in children without putting them at an increased risk for
an unfavorable outcome.
Goal of the Research:
The overall goal of the study is to essentially develop

Argumentative Essay On Food Allergic Children
Moreover, food allergic children are also bullied due to their allergy, in addition to isolation and
exclusion. Children who have a food allergy while in school "may find close peers a source of
support for their condition, however emerging research indicates that children with food allergies
may also encounter teasing and bullying due to their food allergies" (McQuaid and Jandasek). While
some food allergic children are fortunate enough to find friends that also have a food allergy in their
class, most food allergic children do not. Food allergies are prevalent in about 6 in 100 children,
meaning that a majority of a child's class is food allergy free. This can cause issues with bullying
between classmates and peers within the school. "A recent study by Shemesh and colleagues (2013)
indicated that almost half (45.4%) of children with food allergies reported having been bullied, and
31.5% reported bullying specific to their food allergy" (McQuaid and Jandasek). Bullying happens
in schools everywhere and is typically a daily occurrence within a school and comes in many forms
including, physical, verbal, social, and cyber. Physical bullying is particularly dangerous when it
involves a food allergic child. Classmates can physically hurt the food allergic child by bringing the
food to class or taunting them with the food in the lunch room. Social bullying involves leaving
someone out on purpose, telling others not to be friends with them, etc. This can also affect a food

Pediatric Patient Traits

  • 1. Pediatric Patient Traits Central Traits of Pediatric Researchers Today, millions of people worldwide depend on medications for their everyday health and well–being. Children are a small portion of the population and tend to be healthy which makes it particularly devastating when a small child is ill. Pediatric product development studies tend to be small due to the limited number of children available for clinical trial participation and the strict governmental regulations placed upon them (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2012). Nevertheless, drug testing, research, and use continues to rise due to the drive to help and improve the lives of ill children (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2012). Folkman would regularly bring patients into the lab to introduce researchers to individuals who had benefited from the lab's previous discoveries and who might one day be helped by the next generation of treatments. • 3. Life Saving Strategies for Food Allergies Living with food allergies is a full–time job as it is. Between reading ingredients, calling food companies, worrying about the cross contamination of what others are eating near you, to the what ifs, it can be rather over–whelming at times. Should it not be easier, since food allergies are readily growing? It should be mandatory for school workers, all teachers, nurses, and caregivers to notice signs of anaphylaxis and when to give ephedrine. One of the easiest ways to make this possible would be to teach these life skills just as one would learn CPR. In order to make sure this is a widespread knowledge, it would be needed to have a daycare. It is very important for a caregiver to know what to look for and what anaphylaxis looks like. Anaphylaxis is not always noticeable, or just the throat closing up. Even though this topic has been written about many times over, I hope to give readers another perspective, and hopefully change some protocols, from a mother who has food allergies and is taking care of her children with food allergies. I have been taught not to go near peanuts, and to tell people to not bring peanuts anywhere near me. I have always had this constant reminder that I will most likely never get to taste peanut butter and that I will always be reminded to not go near peanuts. Peanut allergies have always been thought incurable, but there is new hope for the future. In life I have always been plagued with questions about my peanut allergy. Every single person has their own ideas on what would happen to a person with a peanut allergy and I am here to set things straight. I cannot say how many times I am asked, "what happens when you touch a peanut?" When a person with a peanut allergy comes in contact with peanuts, they do not immediately puff up like they do in "Meet the Robinsons," nor do they swell to almost triple their size. The reaction, called Anaphylaxis, could happen in minutes or it could take up to four hours for the reaction to appear (Murphy). I hear so many stories about how peanut oil will start a reaction, and that is only true in some cases. Pure refined peanut oil cannot cause a reaction to a person with a peanut allergy, the proteins in the peanuts that cause the reaction have been stripped away (Murphy). For example, tuberculosis of the spine may give you back pain, and tuberculosis in your kidneys might cause blood in your urine. The Department of Respiratory Medicine and Allergology at Aarhus University Hospital has released a study on an interferon–gamma release assay test that has performed well in routine screening for tuberculosis. A positive interferon– gamma release assay, also known as IGRA, is regarded proof of latent mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. They concluded an evaluation of the IGRA test "T–SPOT:T3" to test its performance during clinical routine use by analyzing the positivity rate and odds, as well as the effect of the season and sensitivity. The T–Spot. tuberculosis performs well in routine screening prior to TNFα treatment as well as in control investigation procedures. Test performance is influenced by the age of the patient and by the season of the year in which the test is performed, but mostly in terms of the occurrence of inconclusive results. Doing a practicum in this clinic does help the students who want to pursue a career in medical field to see how medicine is practiced in other countries. This clinic allowed 12 of us to be stationed in different departments that they have such as urology, general medicine, laboratory, ophthalmology, allergology, physical therapy, pharmacy, dermatology, dentistry, traumatology, and hospital. As for me, I was able to observe doctors in some of the departments such as general medicine, physical therapy, pharmacy, ophthalmology, laboratory, allergology, dermatology, dentistry, and hospital. In addition, I was able to learn some materials of each department. For example, when I was stationed to general medicine, I was able to observe how the general medicine doctor practiced his profession. • 13. Why We Shouldn T Peanuts Be Banned From Schools Have you ever seen a story on the news of a student that died from a peanut allergy? Many stories of peanut reactions in schools prove that they should be banned because of unnecessary deaths. This is a controversial topic, some people agree with banning peanuts and believe they should be banned from schools. Others, think that peanuts should not be banned. I claim peanuts should be banned because kids die every year in schools because of these allergies, even after lunch kids could have a reaction, and because kids should be able to feel safe in school. One reason that schools should ban peanut butter is because students die every year in school because of cross contamination. If you do not know what cross contamination is, it is when a food product that one person is allergic to touches another product and then carries bacteria from that allergen–related food. One example, is a 7–year–old girl named Ammaria Johnson who died in Virginia during recess from an allergic reaction. The girl was not given Benadryl or the EpiPen injection to reverse the symptoms so by the time the ambulance arrived the little first grader was already in cardiac arrest. According to Katie ... But, the people without the allergy should not have to constantly worry about the kids with the allergy. They should not have to worry because the kids with the allergy should know what to eat and what not to eat. Also, the kids with allergies should be aware of their surrounding. However, the kids should not always have to be paranoid about their surroundings. Life would not be enjoyable because the kids would constantly be making sure that nobody who ate nuts is touching their things or sharing with them. Allergen Labeling On the back of every processed food item, there is a label which millions of Americans depend upon to make sure that the contents of the food will not trigger an allergic reaction. As many people can tell, food allergies have gone from nearly non–existent to such an amount that marketing, shopping, and eating have been changed to accommodate the different needs of the population. Everyday choices for this group of people shape the needs of our country: an improvement for allergen labelling. Are the small inscripted labels cutting it for the people of America right now? Is society doing enough to prevent an accident from occurring? Or does it all depend on the individuals themselves? Answering these questions are easy: it all comes down to labelling. A sticker makes all the difference in their world and although so many established practices have been made to protect people against receiving an allergen, it is a never ending problem. Even when one food item causes one person to have a reaction, it can affect the company, family, and the people around them. America is a very developed country, with some of the best hospitals in the world, but actions must be taken to help this potential danger sitting on a shelf. Food allergies are so much more common than one may think, and allergens are everywhere in our world. For several years now, researchers have blamed common analgesics (pain relievers) and antipyretics (fever reducers), mainly acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), as potential causes of asthma symptoms and new–onset asthma. However, more recent evidence seems to vindicate pain medicine. Here's 5 things to know. Tylenol becomes the leading pain medicine. In 1980, Aspirin was linked with Reye's Syndrome. This was also the same year that Tylenol was marketed as the pain reliever hospitals choose first. This quickly turned out to be a huge boon for the makers of Tylenol, whose sales skyrocketed over the ensuing years. Later in the decade ibuprofen became available as an alternative over the counter pain medicine and fever ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Study after study continued to confirm suspicions that common pain relievers were guilty. (3–4) Most studies only involve Tylenol. Keep in mind, that since acetaminophen is the most commonly used pain reliever and fever reducer, it's the one most often used in studies. It is generally considered a weaker pain reliever to ibuprofen, although it is more widely used because it's better tolerated than Aspirin and ibuprofen, which have both been shown to irritate the stomach. (3) Tylenol seems to lower glutathione levels. A theory arose that taking Tylenol reduces glutathione. It's a protein produced by many cells in your body, but it's also an antioxidant that prevents free radicals from causing oxidative stress, which can cause damage to cells, such as cells lining airways. Various studies have linked this with both asthma symptoms and new–onset asthma. Tylenol mostly affects glutathione levels in the liver, although it has also been shown to lower glutathione levels in the lungs. However, there are also other things that might lower glutathione. (4–6) The suspicions inspired concerns. Parents and physicians alike often wondered if they should even recommend these common pain relievers and fever reducers for children. Peanut Allergies And Food Allergies Introduction: According to Food Allergy Research and Education, peanut allergies are known to be one of the most common food allergies in children and adults. These allergies cause allergic reactions that can be severe and potentially fatal to those allergic to peanuts. Studies have indicated that approximately 20 percent of children eventually outgrow their peanut allergy. It is important to know the distinction between peanuts and tree nuts, such as, almonds, cashews and walnuts. Being allergic to peanuts does not impose a greater chance to tree nut allergies; however, an estimated 25–40 percent who have peanut allergies are also allergic to tree nuts (FARE, 2015). Children who have a food allergy while in school "may find close peers a source of support for their condition, however emerging research indicates that children with food allergies may also encounter teasing and bullying due to their food allergies" (McQuaid and Jandasek). While some food allergic children are fortunate enough to find friends that also have a food allergy in their class, most food allergic children do not. Food allergies are prevalent in about 6 in 100 children, meaning that a majority of a child's class is food allergy free.
