that every individual has diverse values and understandings regarding what the soul may be defined

soul can be identified as something that is interconnected with the body. It is eternal, existing both

of Aristotle, Augustine and Plato this proves that the soul is essential to the existence of the
individual. The soul serves as an essential component to both the body and the being. The soul is an

There are known to be seven different types of souls that a person can have. These include: scholars,
artisans, warriors, servers, sages, priests, and kings. Servers tend to be naturally accommodating and

A soul is something that is hard to describe and define as it is not a physical thing. When you think
above it is quite hard to be certain that human beings even have a soul because we cannot see it or
have hard evidence of it. Unlike the brain, which we cannot see our own but we know for certain
human beings do in fact have a brain due to the hard evidence such as brain scans and the fact that
we cannot do everyday tasks without it. However, saying that, it is quite common to think that we

compares the soul to a greater level of reality: the Forms. The Affinity Argument In order to
demonstrate more clearly that the soul coheres as a single entity after death, Socrates draws a

An Analysis of the Distinctions of the Body and the Soul in the Philosophy of Socrates
This philosophical study will define the distinctions of the body and the soul as defined in the
philosophy of Socrates. In the Phaedo, Socrates defines the important distinction between the
"visible" body and the "invisible" substance of the soul. Socrates defines the temporal and changing
nature of the visible body, which is impermanent. In contrast to this view, the soul is a higher form
of incomposite energy that is always constant and never changing. These differences define the
immortality of the soul in relation to the temporal form of the body. Socrates is arguing in favor of
the immortality of the soul, which can shed different "bodies" in a "composite" interrelationship.
This is one reason why Socrates believes in the Afterlife during his trial, as defined in the dialogue

the human body. His position is best described as attributing the soul to a light bulb, and the brain to

Now there is the mortality of the soul, given that Swinburne's definition of the soul is similar to my
definition of the mind I will focus on that. I believe the human mind passes form body to soul upon
death. But what happens after that I do not know. I feel that our minds on this new plane of

The Republic by Plato emphasizes how justice is exemplified by arguing that our soul is divided
into three different parts and relates to Eudaimonia, happiness. A Greek philosopher, Socrates, was

Thrasymachus, Adeimantus, and Glaucon, continuously argued until a perfect definition was

of situations. For most people, their understaning of the process of dying follows teachings set forth

body, and goes to either rejoice in Heaven or be tortured in Hell, with perhaps a stop in–between,
depending on your religious beliefs. Meanwhile, your physical body returns to dust. Then,
somewhere in time, there is a resurrection of each soul to either eternal life or eternal damnation.
But if that 's true –– your soul goes straight to Heaven or Hell upon death –– why would it need to
be resurrected at a later time? Perhaps that concept has always troubled you but you weren 't able to

Phaedo, also known to ancient readers as On the Soul, is one of greatest dialogues of Plato's period.
Phaedo centers itself around the death of Socrates. Throug Plato, Socrates lived on generations after
his time. Phaedo begins with Socrates addressing his death and stating a true philosopher should
look forward to death. He asserts that the soul is immortal and the philosopher spends his life
training and detaching itself from the needs of the body. This topic, of "an immortal soul", has
continued to be discussed. There are various works and dialogues about this topic, but the Phaedo
explains it best.
Death is defined as the separation of the body from the soul. In The Phaedo, death has two notions;

Plato gives an account of the relationship between his conception of the soul and the theory of the
forms in the Socratic dialogue Phaedo. He rejects the established view that the soul is contingent on
the body and is extinguished upon death and offers four defences for the notion of the immortality
of the soul. From the observation that all things come to be from their opposites Socrates establishes
that life follows death and that the soul must have existed before death. He then proposes that
learning is actually a process of recollecting what we previously had knowledge of, this knowledge
must have been possessed before birth, but then forgotten, again implying that the soul must have

I believe slavery throughout the book is defined as, humans being pieces of property or machines if
you will without any say or freedom in what they can and cannot do. Slaves trades were the
exchange of slaves from one plantation to another. Everyday slaves lived in fear of being traded,

When looking at personal identity, one would define who they are by perhaps what it is that makes
them who they are today, compared to who they were five years prior, or even a week ago. One's
personal identity can form from virtually anything that someone believes defines who they are as a
person. Soul theory goes one step further, explaining that it is not our body who defines us as who

says that sight is what makes the eye be an eye. If the eye is not able to see then there is no point in

As i close my eyes and picture this "Horror of the shade" (10) it hits me that the speakers "black pit"

The Soul Is The Unifying Principle
Someone who believes and views human nature in that the soul is the unifying principle is said to be
holomorphic. One of those philosophers is Thomas Aquinas. In Aquinas' argument, he states that the
soul is part of the body and that it requires it in its everyday needs. The premise that he sets forth is
"Since the soul is united to the body as its form, it must necessarily be in the whole body, and in
each part thereof." The soul is the function that drives the body to move and think. Without it, the
body is nothing and is not simply just a motor that chugs at every breath that a human takes. It is not
to be considered just a mechanical factor. The soul is a special force that coincides with the body. As
he states "the soul is united to the body" thus, the body would become a lifeless entity without it.
This conveys the notion of how the soul is everything, mind and body. He expresses that "the soul is
a substantial form" emphasizing that it is ideal to the body. His conclusion came to be that
"Therefore, on the withdrawal of the soul, as we do not speak of an animal or manliness equivocally
(as we speak of a painted animal or stone animal), so it is with the hand, the eye the flesh and
bones... [that] no part of the body retains its proper action." This shows how the body will become
lifeless and dull. Therefore, the soul helps the body to function the way it is. If one component

1.Simmias states how the relationship between the soul and body are the same as that between the
harmony of a well–tuned lyre and the lyre itself. As we discussed in class, when one thing depends
on another thing to exist, then if the latter is destroyed as a result the formal thing doesn't exist
either. For example, Socrates' argument that the soul is immortal is incorrect in Simmias' eyes
because if the body is destroyed then the soul no longer exists (Phaedo, 462). Simmias uses this
comparison to shine light on the fact that because the body is not immortal the soul cannot be
immortal either, which is a fair point.
In addition, there is a part where Simmias states that the harmony that exists from the instrument
being tuned and held in the correct way is comparable to how the soul only exists if the body is
correctly assembled. Thus, if destroying said instrument you also destroy the harmony, then what is
to prevent us from saying that if we destroy a body we also destroy the soul inside of it? He is
explaining how the harmony is invisible and so is the soul, but just because it's invisible doesn't
mean that it doesn't exist, rather, it exists solely in conjunction with the lyre and never without it
(Plato 40).
2.To start off, Socrates gets both Simmias and Cebes to accept that the theory of recollection is true,
which points out that Simmias' view is incorrect due to the fact that the recollection argument
proves that soul exists before birth (inconsistency with recollection rebuttal). Socrates' point
explains how harmony cannot exist to the prior elements that it is composed of, therefore it is not
like a soul. The lyre and the strings must exist before and thus the harmony comes at the end as a
result of the two. He states that as a result there must be different forms of harmony but those forms
do not apply to the soul. Due to Simmias finding the theory of recollection very convincing, he
manages to contradict himself and the argument he made with the counter arguments Socrates made
(Phaedo 120–128).
To add, Socrates makes three more rebuttals to point out the soul is different from an instrument.
First, he states that an instrument can be tuned to bring more or less harmony (vice is a disharmony

The goal of the following paper is to convince that soul theory is directly linked to one's personal

It was said that the soul is what gives one their personal identity, and to my awareness everybody
wakes up as the same person they were the day before. If same soul is equal to the same person, we
would have a different personality each time the soul is switched. We may not be fully aware that
