Farm As An Allegory In Animal Farm By George Orwell
Animal Farm can be an allegory for any communist revolution and subsequent collapse (if taken a
little more generally), but is specifically drawing from the Russian revolutions of 1917. Many of the
characters are direct parallels to members of the communist regime, and others are representatives
of portions of the population. Old Major represents two different people, both Marx and Lenin. As
Marx, he introduces the principles of communism to the animals. As Lenin, he puts the revolution in
motion. He tells them that they should rebel, and soon. Orwell is largely positive in his portrayal of
the character, he liked Marxism theoretically, believing that the execution was flawed. In the context
of the book, however, Old Major, as the instigator, held much of the blame for the eventual
degradation of the society. But he was eventually forgotten as the farm's condition worsened, so he
started the snowball rolling, but failed to see that it would get bigger and more destructive as it
rolled down the hill. Mr. Jones is Czar Nicholas the II of Russia, the last Czar. He was cruel, and
uninterested in the day–to–day running of the farm, preferring to leave the job to hired hands, who
were just as lazy as Jones. Nicholas the II wasn't very lazy. He was, however, disconnected from his
people, and that proved to be just as ineffective and damaging. The Czar was overthrown quickly
but never came back to try to reclaim Russia. He was killed by the Bolsheviks just a year after

The Dangers Of Farm In George Orwell's Animal Farm
Most believe when George Orwell wrote Animal Farm he was trying to warn us about several thing,
some of those things include communism, revolution, and class divide. Orwell points out the
dangers of communism by putting the dangers in a understandable, digestible cute story with
animals. He shows the dangers of revolution by remind us how some revolutionions just end up
being a switch a power to someone worse. And he reminds us about the dangers of class divide by
have a big ruling class destroy all others. George Orwell wrote "Animal Farm" to remind us the
dangers of communism, revolution, and class divide.
One of the main reasons Orwell wrote this book is to show us the dangers of communism. Overall
it's blatantly obvious the whole book is just a big "diss" on communism by having historical events
line up to the ones in the book. Even the animals ideology is called, Animalism. In the book an
animal named Old Major gave a speech on the principles of "Animalism" in which Old Major
stated, ""Now, comrades, what is the nature of this life of ours? Let us face it: our lives are
miserable, laborious, and short." and ""Man is the only creature that consumes without producing.
He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot run fast
enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all the animals" (Animal Farm Pg. 3) . This kind of talk
sounds awfully similar to the teachings of Marx and Lenin the same people who eventually
influenced and stared the russian revolution which would lead the the creation of the U.S.S.R
thenceforth 20 million dead. Furthermore, it seems that Orwell was trying to compare some of his
character to notorious communists so that he could warn us. That is one way Orwell was trying to
warn us in Animal Farm.
Another thing Orwell was trying to warn us in Animal Farm is the dangers of revolution. See, most
revolutions have a change of power from one bad person to a worse person. Some historical
examples include French Revolution which saw power go from the monarch to Napoleon, Iranian
Revolution which saw power go from the the king to the khomeini, and the Russian Revolution.
Orwell was warning us by again having the events of the Russian Revolution line

Similarities Between Animal Farm And Animal Farm
Two visions; Different Results
In George Orwell's novel Animal Farm he asserts that following "blindly", will lead to government
abuse and corruption. Orwell's assertion brings life to the philosophy that a utopian atmosphere can
never exist. Orwell's purpose is to deliver the idea of communism not being successful and to make
the audience reading not want to get into communism. George Orwell informs the young audience
of the danger with communism. Orwell was a very cynical individual when it came to writing
"Animal Farm". There were many similarities and differences between Martin Luther King Jr. and
the character, Old Major in Animal Farm. One similar political equality between the two figures is
they both had a vision or dream of inspiring the masses of people to dream of a better future.
between two groups of people. Despite having so many similarities between the two there are also
several differences as well. Such as, the animals had different rights to fight for, for example, the
animals were being overworked by Mr. Jones and they were not receiving enough food. On the other
side, the blacks, during the Martin Luther King Jr. time period, were not able to go in the same
bathroom as whites. The Blacks had restrictions to their rights in the idea of not being able to pursue
certain circumstances as the whites did.
The historical figure Martin Luther King Jr. had many similarities and differences with the character
in Animal Farm, Old Major. Both individuals had visions of rebellion but Martin Luther had the
mentality of peaceful rebellion, while olf major wanted violence. The significant events between
Martin Luther King Jr. and Old Major was the Beasts of England speech and the I have a Dream
speech. Old Major used Beasts of England to show the animals his vision or dream for the farm.
Also, Martin Luther King Jr. used I have a Dream to bring light to the idea of black rights. Old
Major and Martin Luther King Jr. both had both a goal in their mind for what they want there
atmosphere to be. In Animal Farm, the speech Beasts of England was used and it said "Beasts of
England, Beasts of England, Beasts of every land and clime, hearken to my joyful tidings" (orwell

Farm As An Allegory In George Orwell's Animal Farm
Orwell's Animal Farm is an allegory because he used animals to represent the people of the Soviet
Union, the farm as the country, and everything they did and said represented the real life events that
happened in the Soviet Union. Throughout the entire story he used hidden meanings. This was done
by the words and actions of the animals, as well as, landmarks and the windmill. Before Major died
he stated in his speech that "No animal in England is free. The life of an animal is misery and
slavery: that is the plain truth." The animals decided to start a rebellion to be rid of Mr. Jones. This
also happened in the Soviet Union. When the animals talked about Animalism they were referring to
communism. To start the pigs were equal to all the other animals on the farm. After the rebellion the
pigs took over saying they were smarter than all the others. The work of teaching and organizing the
others fell naturally upon the pigs, who were generally recognized as being the cleverest of the
animals. Then the pigs became corrupt by all the power the other animals let them have. This power
left the pigs to rule with tyranny. The Soviet Union leader was also corrupt and ruled with tyranny.
All the habits of Man are evil. And, above all, no animal must ever tyrannise over his own kind.
Weak or strong, clever or simple, we are all brothers. No animal must ever kill any other animal. All
animals are equal. This was not true because all the animals except for the pigs worked hard but the

"Animal Farm" Essay
Whether it may be in the past or the present, power can change a person into doing horrible things.
To some, they will use any means of tactics to obtain power. In "Animal Farm" by George Orwell,
he uses the story to portray the Russian Revolution. One event that happened in "Animal Farm" was
when Napoleon starved the hens to death when they weren't willing to lay eggs. A historical event
that could relate to this is when Stalin starved millions of his people when they didn't want to work.
Through the uses of symbolism in the story, it reveals how too much power tends to change a person
by that they do horrible things, which causes conflict between individual rights and societal
concerns.
Napoleon, who symbolizes Joseph ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the story, Napoleon, who thought that if he had the power he could do anything, took milk from
the cows to give it to the pigs, while all the other animals are fearing that Mr. Jones is coming back.
Likewise, Napoleon uses the possibility of Mr. Jone coming back to threaten the other animals
through propaganda and fear. Although Napoleon takes milk from the cows, he states that "Our sole
object in taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples ( this has been proved by
Science, comrades... It is for your sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples. Do you use
know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back! Yes, Jones would
come back!... Now if there was one thing that the animals were completely certain of, it was that
they did not want Jones to come back (52–53)." From the story, it tells that Napoleon uses fear to
manipulate the animals into believing that without them, the pigs, Mr. Jones would come back. The
pigs use that point since they know that the animals do not want Mr. Jones to come back and reclaim
the farm. Well, Napoleon also uses the word "proven by science" to gain the animal's trust that they
didn't do it for themselves but for the animals. It also reminded the animals that the pigs are essential
to running the farm. Napoleon's behavior is similar to Joseph Stalin's uses of

Big Farms Research Paper
There are many differences between big farms and traditional farms such as environmental issues,
animal waste, antibiotic use, health issues, animal treatment, and economic involvement with their
communities just to name a few. When it comes to animal waste issues, industrial or big farm
livestock have a larger number of animals in one area, as a result there can be too much manure
concentration for one area of land to handle, and also is stock–piled in large lagoons or holding pits.
Over application of manure can happen as the costs of transportation are high making it more
expensive to get rid of it. Excessive amounts of manure storage cause emissions of gases like
ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and methane into the air causing significant odor issues and health
problems. Small family farms only raise what the land is capable of handling, and use composted
manure to fertilize, instead of commercial fertilizers and chemicals. Health issues play a significant
role as well between the two types of farms. Big farms over use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic
resistance, the excessive chemical odors and fumes used can lead to headaches for workers,
respiratory issues and nausea. Bacteria and parasites from animal waste which are chlorine resistant
may cause human disease. Local, small family farms are much more likely to raise and grow food

unhealthy conditions, a large amount of antibiotic use is causing antibiotic resistance, making them

administer them to sick animals. Organic farmers will pull sick animals from a herd before treating
them, and will not sell the meat from that animal under an organic

Cloughbane Farm Shop Is Run By Lorna Robinson
Cloughbane Farm Shop
Introduction –
Cloughbane Farm Shop is run by Lorna Robinson, Sam Robinson and Robert & Richard Robinson,
Sam and Lorna's sons. The Robinsons have been farming at Cloughbane for around 150 years and is
now in its fourth generation. Up until 2002, it was, pure and simple, a farm, selling our beef, lamb
and free range eggs to wholesalers.
However in 2002 they were invited to be a founding member of the farm market set up in
Dungannon. At the market they sold their lamb and beef which they reared at the farm. They would
leave their lamb mature for 10–14 days on the bone and this was because they believed this gives it
a better taste. Their beef is left to mature for 28 days and this is to make it tender and also to gives it
a better taste.
Thanks to the setup of the Dungannon farm market they decided to start their own business selling
their goods at their own farm in a shop. They converted and old pig house in a shop which features
12–foot butchery serve over counter, three other chill cabinets for their own and other locally
sourced products. They also stocked fruit and vegetables plus some ambient lines.
This year Cloughbane farm shop was nominated for 2 awards at the Grow Make Eat Drink 2016
Awards. One of the awards they were nominated for was Best Small Food / Drink Producer and the
other award was Best Food / Drink Marketing Campaign.

Animal Farm Vs Animal Farm
Humans have aspired to develop and implement an ideal society. A society is a fragile, intricate
concept that contains many important factors. Throughout history, there have been countless
attempts to create a flawless society. None of these attempts have resulted in a perfect society. Many
attempts have failed; however, many have been successful. The novels Lord of the Flies, by William
Golding and Animal Farm, by George Orwell exhibit two different societies that both result in
failure due to a desire for power and the regulations and rules that are established.
Lord of the Flies is a novel that takes place during a nuclear war. It depicts the story of several
young children taken away from the real world and forced to live by themselves on a deserted
island. The novel describes the childrens' attempts to govern themselves and create a society. There
are two clear leaders, Ralph and Jack who stand out from the beginning of the story. When the
children arrive on the island, they find a conch and instinctually accept without question that
whoever holds the conch possesses the power to speak: "Ralph smiled and held up the conch for
silence. 'Listen, everybody'" (Golding 23). The conch is an early symbol of power and authority.
This also symbolizes hope for their society. It creates order and unites everyone under the conch.
The conch represents the power to make decisions and voice opinion. As the novel progresses, this
universally accepted rule becomes obsolete and is

Personal Statement On Family Farms
Family farms serve as both a place to live and a place to work and is unique as both a home and a
workplace. Growing up on a cattle farm, with horses and the necessary machinery, I was exposed to
many conditions that have taught me valuable lessons and allowed me to thrive as a young
individual. One of the main reasons that I have been able to thrive under these circumstances is
because of my family members ensuring my safety. My family has always been rigorous about
teaching me how to stay safe from the many dangers on our farm that could leave me vulnerable to
injury and illness. On our farm, we consider the health and safety of our family to be our number
one priority. When I was young, my parents restricted my access to worksites on the farm and were
certain to reduce my exposure to hazardous situations to ensure my safety and well–being. I was
prohibited to go near the cattle without one of my adult family members being with me and was not
allowed to roam around the farm without the supervision of an adult. I became progressively
mesmerized by the livestock on our farm and wanted to be more involved with them so that I could
pursue my curiosity. While this worried my parents to a certain degree, they supported my curiosity
and began to give me modified tasks and chores that I was capable of doing without putting me in
harm's way. Before performing any of these tasks however, they ensured that I was properly
informed on what I was to do and how I was to do them. The

There are a few key aspects of dairy farming that need to be monitored carefully or result in
unwanted outcomes. This includes the voltage on the fences around the farm, the temperature of the
milk that is in the vat and the activity of the water pump. A constant monitoring system of these
three important farming aspects could improve farm profitability. A mobile phone application will
be designed to incorporate monitoring of these three activities. If the fences do not have the required
voltage on them this can result in animals escaping and injuring themselves. This can be difficult to
monitor as currently to do this you are required to be on the farm using a fence tester. The milk
temperature is required to be below 7 degrees Celsius within 3 hours by the milk company to ensure
it is safe for human consumption. This is done through using chiller machines as if the milk does not
reach this temperature in time the entire vat full of milk must be disposed of which causes a loss of

Animal Farm
Animal Farm is an allegory of the Russian Revolution and mocks the war in the form of a fable.
Many of the characters are interpreted as people involved in the Russian Revolution, along with
events and objects in the novel that are symbolized in the revolution. Although many of the
characters events, and objects represent aspects of revolution, like Mr. Jones represents Nicholas II,
there are a lot of symbols too. When Mr. Jones turned to drinking, he was arriving to the farm very
late and would forget to feed the animals for days at a time. When the animals decided they had
enough of his careless acts, they rebelled against him. The animals chased Mr. Jones out of the farm
and the pigs took over. This an allegory of the army turning on Nicholas II during a revolution that
randomly started in 1917, just like the animals' rebellion. The army eventually exiled him and set up
a temporary government, otherwise known as "the pigs." In the novel, it states that "At last they
could stand no longer. A minute later all five of them were in full flight down the cart–track that led
to the main road, with the animals pursuing them in triumph." ... Show more content on

During the revolution, religion was the main topic the workers would talk about, so once people
believed there was hope after their miserable life, they worked harder. In Animal Farm, Moses tells
the animals about a place called Sugar Candy Mountain (heaven) and all the animals decide to work
harder because of it. When religion spread among the workers, Marx tolerated it because he said it
was an anesthetic to the people and helped them to work without complaint. "He claimed to know

Abolishing Farm Subsidies In The United States
In the 1930s, during the Great Depression, Secretary of agriculture Henry Wallace introduced farm
subsidies as a "temporary solution to deal with an emergency." That emergency was a collapse of
farm incomes with 25 percent of the population depending on agricultural earnings (Riedl, 2007).
But today farmers make up just 1 percent of the population and farm incomes are well above the
national average, making the original purpose of subsidies irrelevant (Kelley, 2016). On average, the
United State's Department of Agriculture spends $25 billion on farm subsidies every year with the
majority being handed out to large farms and corporations. Through these subsidies, the government
has created an exceptionally large welfare system for farmers (Edwards, ... Show more content on

Hillbilly: The Importance Of Farm Safety
Being called a hick, rancher, or hillbilly is common to hear from city folks when they learn that I
grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere. The things I valued most about growing up on the farm
consisted of learning new skills, having plenty of personal space, and having experiences that people
who grew up in the city would not have had. Personally, the most valuable quality I have learned in
the seventeen years I have been alive is responsibility. Whether it is helping with harvest, feeding
the animals or filling the furnace with wood, safety is an important aspect of all actions on the farm.
On average, there are fourteen deaths each year that could be avoided by educating people about the
significance of safety and health hazards on the farm. Informing people on the dangers of the farm
involve awareness of machinery, chemicals, electricity, and tiredness.
As many individuals know, there are many types of machinery on the farm. This could include
tractors, combines, augers, sprayers, bailers and ATVs. Each of these pieces of machinery could
potentially be a danger and risk to those using and nearby them. A person should be cautious around

and safer. To know the animals you working with is crucial because animals that have not been

Animal Farm written by George Orwell is an animal fable happens in a farm where animals start

theme that the corruption of power appears when majority is ruled. The intelligence superior allows
the pigs placing themselves at a position which is closer to the power and which is more easily to

treatment, the animals rather think less and do more work. Common animals are naive working
class, who are unable or unwilling to question authority, condemning themselves to suffer the full
extent of the ruling class's oppression. After having a taste of power, the pigs lose themselves in
their lust for ultimate power. Because of the supreme position of the pigs in the farm, a minority
controls the majority of the animals, their greed for power leads to the corruption of the power. First
of all, Napoleon uses dogs to expel Snowball in order to have exclusive power. Napoleon starts to

being human in the story. The pigs' greed of being human has not

Animal Farm
In the movie, the Animal farm, based on the book, Animal Farm, by George Orwell, The pigs are an
important part of the movie. In the movie, towards the beginning, the animals on the farm,
especially the pigs wanted a change with their standards of living. So they decided to get everyone
to remove the Farmer. I think of this as in Marxism the people trying to get rid of the government.
They held a meeting to decide what to do and all of the pigs sat in the front all looking for the best
spot. I also translate this to be the opposite of Marxism because they thought higher than everyone
else, which is not Marxism where everyone is equal. After the animal kicked out the Farmer, they
set up laws that related to Marxist ideas. For example, all animals are equal which is what Marxist
wanted after seeing the working class in the industrial revolution. He wanted to have a society
where everyone got equal shares on a business, employees and managers. This resembles what
happens in the animal farm for the beginning of the movie. Snowball addresses that they should all
eat equally and work equally, but Napoleon secretly trains soldiers to take over. This is the transition
from Marxism to socialism because now the pigs were the bosses of the other animals and ... Show

As children, my grandfather offered my brother and me a job on his farm. He took the time to
employ us for many reasons: cheap labor mainly. However, for us, this opportunity offered much
more. It gave us a source of income, character growth, experience, and most of all–it gave us
perspective. From about the fourth grade all the way up to the seventh, I spent my summers toiling
on that one–twenty acre piece of land. Many of the experiences that I have there play a significant
role in who I am today. Over the four summers, I watched my grandfather's farm transition from
growing organic produce to farming livestock. The tasks that go along with both of these types of

Another one sat in the work cart that held the post and followed the skid steer placing posts at each
hole. My brother and I followed behind them. We each carried a spud bar, a seventeen–pound bar
with one flat circle end that is about three inches in diameter, and a shovel. We made a competition
out of who could sturdily place their post the fastest. Each post took about eight minutes, after
figuring out the best way to do it. With every post I managed to put into the ground, I grew tired and

Farm As An Allegory In George Orwell's Animal Farm
An author who has been praised though the years for his revolutionary ideas and works, George
Orwell has written everything from poems to essays. He liked uncovering hidden truths;
consequently, doing it by writing political works like Animal Farm. On the surface George Orwell's
novel Animal Farm is about a group of neglected animals who overthrow their owner and take
control of the farm. However, under the surface this novel is an allegory detailing the events of the
Russian Revolution. The author's use of anthropomorphism and common diction lead us to believe
he intended the novel to be read by the "everyday man" or lay person. The novel is written as
warning to readers within its central theme that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts
absolutely. Orwell uses stylistic devices (such as symbolism and irony) and tone (hope twisted to
despair) in Animal Farm to tell the tragic tale of animal rebellion at Manor Farm. The author wrote
this novel in response to his opinion of the Russian Revolution; he wanted to consciously use
political and artistic purpose in the book to talk to the people. Ultimately, Orwell effectively fuses
his "political" and "artistic" purpose into a single powerful work of art in his short novel Animal
Farm.
One of Orwell's works that could help us analyze and understand his intent for Animal Farm is his
essay "Why I Write". George Orwell's essay "Why I Write" is about the evolution of Orwell's style
of writing from a child to the time when written and how his opinions on writing have changed.
Perhaps the author wrote "Why I Write" because he wants to help explain to the world how Animal
Farm was written and the thought process behind it. Orwell's intended audience for this work is
writers and readers of his books. Writers would be interested as it gives advice and his beliefs on
writing, but his readers would be interested because it talks about his books more in depth and his
purpose. The narrator in this essay is the author himself and it is in first person describing events and
his thoughts/emotions. Orwell used some stylistic devices in "Why I Write" but the main two that
are showcased are rhetoric and analogies. Overall, the tone throughout the entire work is reflective
but in

The main thing that prompted Orwell to create this piece, were the rising amounts of writers using
euphemisms and sometimes absolute vagueness to get their point across. Granted the fact that this
was published a year after his novel Animal Farm, the intended audience can be assumed to be those
who already read his works or those who are familiar with his political stance. Orwell wrote this
essay with the intentions of informing those reading that many people back then used a truly dry
form of the English language to persuade and essentially shape the reader's mind while warning
those who were intelligent enough to understand. Throughout this writing, Orwell spoke from a first
person perspective. The author used literary devices such as rhetoric several times in this essay;
using pathos more often than that of ethos or logos. For example in an excerpt from his essay, he
talked about how an English professor was defending Russian totalitarianism. The professor would
twist his words instead of sounding harsh and stating that he believed that killing off opponents is
acceptable if it is beneficial. The tone given by the author is a solely straightforward and serious

conclusion to attend Garden City Community College at a lower cost. Four out of 10 graduating

Furthermore, with the total costs of Garden City Community College for two complete years being

The Decline of the Family Farm
Growing up on a small family wheat farm in southwestern Oklahoma, I have experienced the harsh
conditions of farming firsthand. The job that used to employ the largest amount of people in the
United States has lost the support and the respect of the American people. The Jeffersonian Ideal of
a nation of farmers has been tossed aside to be replaced by a nation of white–collar workers. The
family farm is under attack and it is not being protected. The family farm can help the United States
economically by creating jobs in a time when many cannot afford the food in the stores. The family
farm can help prevent the degradation of the environment by creating a mutually beneficial
relationship between the people producing the food and nature. The family farm is the answer to
many of the tough questions facing the United States today, but these small farms are going
bankrupt all too often. The government's policy on farming is the largest factor in what farms
succeed, but simple economics, large corporations, and society as a whole influence the decline in
family farms; small changes in these areas will help break up the huge corporate farms, keeping the
small family farm afloat. Supply and demand are the rulers of price in the capitalist economy of the
United States, and farm goods rely on these factors as much as any other commodity. The demand
for food remains relatively stable although slightly increasing year to year, but the supply fluctuates
greatly depending on

Revisionist Tactics in Animal Farm The revisionist history casts a false light on actual events and
misrepresents reality. The book Animal Farm is a vicious assessment of the history and rhetoric of
the Russian Revolution. Retelling the story of the emergence and development of Soviet
communism in the form of an animal fable, Animal Farm allegorizes the rise to power of the dictator
Joseph Stalin. In the novella, the overthrow of the human oppressor Mr. Jones by a democratic
coalition of animals quickly gives way to the consolidation of power among the pigs. In the fable the
pigs use revisionist tactics to maintain control over the other animals and to maintain secrecy and
sovereignty. The revisionist tactics are displayed in many ways ... Show more content on

They also work to convince the animals of Napoleon's superior bravery during that battle. So vividly
does Squealer describe Napoleon's suspected heroic actions that the animals are almost able to
remember them? Four days later, Napoleon convenes all of the animals in the yard. With his nine
huge dogs ringed about him and growling, he stages an inquisition and a purge: he forces certain
animals to confess to their participation in a conspiracy with Snowball and then has the dogs tear out
these supposed traitors' throats. Here the revisionist or the pigs alter the facts to receive legitimacy
from the other animals. They created the story of Snowball selling himself to the farmers; they then
built off of this fabrication to discredit his acts during the Battle of Cowshed. They also began to
introduce to the other animals of the illusion that Napoleon played a great and heroic role in the
battle. Since the other animals had been brain washed they doubted their own memories and felt
believed everything that was told to them. In chapter nine it discusses the subject of Boxers death.
One day, Boxer's strength fails; he collapses while pulling stone for the windmill. The pigs

Social And Economic Issues Around Small Farms
Since the founding of America, the small family farm has been a pillar of United States culture and
economics. These small generational farms were known for molding very capable, independent
families that were known for their morality, strong character, and high work–ethic. Urbanization,
industrialization, the growth of U.S. agribusiness, and other economic factors have slowly chipped
away at the presence of the U.S. small family farm. Technology and mechanization developed by
colleges, agribusinesses, and other government sponsored research programs have caused farm
supply to increase exponentially while farm demand grows at roughly the rate of population growth.

Many of these younger workers often see farming as an antiquated profession and relatively
unprofitable. The draw of higher education and the bright lights of city life are constant distractions
pulling them away from the less "exciting" rural life of farming. Without a generation of farmer to
replace the last many small farms are sold and developed commercially or absorbed by larger
commodity driven farms that surround them. Technological advancements have been a strong driver
of change in agriculture over the last 100 years. "Technology is, in fact, the key force driving the
shift of farm activities off farms" (Smith, 1992, p. 8). After the World Wars, mechanical
advancements were made at a rapid pace. "Advances in mechanization and increasing availability of
chemical inputs led to ever–increasing economies of scale that spurred rapid growth in average farm
size, accompanied by an equally rapid decline in the number of farms and in the farm and rural
populations" (Dimitri, Effland, & Conklin, 2005, p. 6). Essentially, the use of mechanization has
dramatically increased the supply of agricultural products while also drastically reducing the size of
the necessary workforce. "The amount of capital used per farmworker increased 15 times between
1930 and 1980, permitting a fivefold increase in the amount of land cultivated per farmer"

Each morning, they never know that the day is going to bring, they may have a plan but, mother
nature is not one to allow that. Many farmers have multiple ventures, for example they could have
three thousand acres of farmland, one hundred acres of pasture land, two confinement buildings for
hogs, and hay to haul. With this much to do there is never time for a vacation, and even on holidays
farmers have much to do. A family farm is very demanding on the whole family. Mothers are
expected to carry on the household while her husband is somewhere in a tractor, and sometimes the
mothers find themselves in the middle of a field helping to bring in the harvest. Many children are
also expected to hold their own on the farm. Many times if the children play sports or are active in
other organizations, they learn very quickly that their parents are not always able to be at every
event. This kind of environment could seem like an odd place to grow up, but studies show that
children who grow up on the farm gain many attributes that other children do not. When a child is
raised on a farm and is held accountable for their own chores they develop a sense of responsibility,
a strong work ethic, how to multitask, the meaning of a family bond, how to selfless, and most
importantly they gain an understanding for life and death. Children do not only gain character traits,

Farm : An Allegory In George Orwell's Animal Farm
In the novel, Animal Farm by George Orwell is an allegory that reflects the events that lead up to the
Russian Revolution. George had used distortion throughout his novel to show how communism was
implemented in the Soviet Union. He used animals to represent people from the Russian Revolution
to prove that the only way to get people on their side was to deceive them. Like any good lie, it has
to start from somewhere and in Animal Farm it came from he Old Major. During his lifetime, Old
Major was known as the "pure breed" pig and was praised by many, but he brought on one teaching
that would fuel Napoleon and his pigs to their plans. Old Major had always want change throughout
his society, but never got the chance to fulfill his goal. After Old Major had passed away, Napoleon
had taken over the farm and become their new leader. Napoleon was not like the rest, he was a terror
to mankind and was willing to do whatever it takes to gain more power. As the leader he takes on his
first task of what can he do to fixed the starvation problem that is happening within the barn without
having the outside world knowing about it. Napoleon had to create an illusion that they were good
on food ration and that the farm was doing good. He had sheep's memorized lines to say to Mr.

Horse Power Farm Video Analysis
The three videos I choose to watch were Horse Power Farm, Lakeside Orchards, and Ayotte Farm.
Horse Power Farm is located in Penobscot, Maine and owned by Paul Birdsall. The distinguishing
features are on the farm's focus for producing vegetables and timber, and relying on their horses
instead of machinery. Paul's farm is specifically a mixed practice as they do have a tractor, but draft
horses are the key component. Another unique aspect of this farm is that as Paul said, "training
apprentices is the most important thing they do." Without the apprentices help, they are limited in
the amount of work they can get done. Lakeside Orchards is located in Kennebec County and is
owned by Steve and Marilyn Meyerhans. They also own The Apple Farm located in Fairfield,
Maine. The distinguishing features for these two farms are the apples and apple products produced.

Animal Farm by George Orwell, an allegorical reflection of the Russian Revolution, was quite the
opposite of my average read. Opening up a novel about a dystopian society ruled by animals gave
me a whole new perspective about equal rights. The animals in this book endured so many
difficulties that could've been avoided if humans weren't the most dominate species. Which is why I
can understand where they're coming from. Who wouldn't want to rebel against something so
unjust? Any activity we do impacts the planet more than any other kind, so the animals in this story
did have a right to find that unfair. Though some characters blew it out of proportion. It makes one

After their farmer Jones was overthrown, these three pigs and their comrades attempted to rid the
farm of any accessories made for animals by throwing them in a fire. In chapter two, when asked if
ribbons were allowed, Snowball responded, "Ribbons should be considered as clothes, which are the
mark of a human being. All animals should go naked." For some time after this was stated, animals
went bare. However, in chapter ten, Napoleon and the other pigs contradicted this concept, wearing
clothes from Mr. Jones's wardrobe. It states, "Napoleon himself appearing in a black coat, ratcatcher
breeches, and leather leggings, while his favorite sow appeared in the watered silk dress in which
Mrs. Jones wore on Sundays." Technically, the pigs did not go against the third commandment they
created that read, "No animal shall wear clothes" because it no longer existed. Instead there was
only a single commandment that stated, "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal
than others." So rather than all animals being fair, the pigs received special treatment while the
others continued to suffer. Which is the same as when Jones was around, because he made all the
animals do the harsh labor while he kept all the proceeds for himself, living in a lovely house and
drinking loads of alcohol. The pigs were even walking around on their hind legs like him, and
engaging in business with humans. The difference between them was unrecognizable, as indicated
on the final page. At this point Napoleon never realized that his mentality was equivalent to Jones's
and that he was no better at controlling the farm than he was. They made the same selfish choices

The Simplicity of Animal Farm
In the book Animal Farm, George Orwell uses a thinly veiled style of writing to clearly convey the
deep political ideas he was trying to give off which helped make the novel a timeless tale. Many of
the literary elements used in this book such as characters, theme, plot, etc. help add to the simplicity
of his writing and are so clearly political references that it makes it obvious to the reader what it is
he's saying, and who it is he's calling out. Throughout the book we read the many ways that the
animals turned a once noble society to a very dishonest government, but Orwell isn't a very
complicated writer and used the characters and political messages instead of fancy writing
techniques.

the other methods Squealer used are all examples of ways he got the other animals to sway one way,
which is exactly what propaganda does. We normally see propaganda in the media, on posters, and
on TV, but all those things include slogans, etc. on them to convince you to do what they want you

this, so he used Boxer to get the poor animals by using rumors." (Animal Farm character analysis on

quite a few of them. He knows how to manipulate the other animals into getting what him, and the
rest of the pig government wants. His character was displayed as pig, but it was so obvious that he
was supposed to represent propaganda, that it wouldn't take much for anyone to figure that

George uses this to display his strong dissatisfaction with the results of the communist revolution.

George Orwell's "Animal Farm" has many different themes portrayed in it. Themes shown in
Animal far are: Leadership and Corruption, Lies and Deceit, Rules and Order, Violence and lastly
Cunning and Cleverness. All these themes are either shown through the characters of the novel or
are shown through the events of Orwell's novel.
George Orwell's Animal farm shows a lot of leadership, power and how it can be easily corrupted.
The most evident event of this theme being portrayed is when Napoleon uses fear and propaganda to
rule over the farm. Evidence of the fear factor can be drawn to when Snowball and Napoleon were

What Happened to the Farms? A History of Development in Possumtown, Piscataway
Piscataway Township, founded in 1666 is one of the oldest English settlements in New Jersey and
all of America. Its strategic placement along the Raritan Valley led to the "later establishment of
towns like New Brunswick, Bound Brook, Somerville... and even Princeton," according to Walter
Meuly in his book The History of Piscataway Township: 1666–1976. Piscataway, which started off
as a largely agricultural community, now embodies the quintessential American suburb. It has a mix

By this time the mechanical age had still not significantly impacted Piscataway. There were about
200 families (40 percent of the town's population) that did not live on farms. Despite this, their main
support system was farm labor and "hand trades" (blacksmithing, carriage–making, and milling).
Farming was a crucial part of Piscataway life; they had not yet been exposed to the technological
advances of the day as much of their labor was still performed by hand. Even though steel plows
and chemical fertilizers had been invented in the earlier 1800s; these were not used in quaint
Piscataway. The Civil War caused an economic boom and bust cycle in Piscataway's farm life. Farm
life prospered as inflation caused farmland in Piscataway to peak at $140 per acre, which is about
$2,477 in 2015. After the civil war, land prices then continued to decline until the 1900s. Also, the
expansion of factories and other forms of "urban employment" caused competition for laborers as
factories generally offered better wages. In 1870 the presence of new railroads brought a new
population of people who relied on the train system to get to work. This provided links between
Piscataway and the outside world as farm life began to decline. However, Piscataway still remained
largely rural (Meuly).
By the twentieth century, suburban development began, as more former farmland was developed to
create housing. Much of this was because family farms could

Farm As An Allegory In George Orwell's Animal Farm
a. Orwell's "Animal Farm" is an allegory due to the usage of the concept of animals on a farm,
which is usually a lighthearted subject, being used to reflect the events leading up to the Russian
Revolution of 1917. The events in the story also reflect on the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. In
the beginning of the story, the Major, whom is an old middle white boar, encourages the other
animals to start a rebellion. He wanted to kick out the owner of the farm, Mr. Jones, so that animals
may instead rule the farm. "Why then do we continue in this miserable condition? Because nearly
the whole of the produce of our labor is stolen from us by human beings. There, comrades, is the
answer to all our problems. It is summed up in a single word––Man. Man is the only real enemy we
have. Remove Man from the scene, and the root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished forever."
This statement was mentioned by Old Major, who was the leader of Manor Farm, to convince the
other animals that there should be a change. This eventually led to the Rebellion. In this quote,
human beings represent communists, while the animals represent the working class citizens, and
everyone affected by communism. In this story, Orwell was able to use animal characters to depict
his message. He was able to convey a serious matter, in a less harsh way.
b. Orwell uses pathos and logos to persuade the readers that communism was the wrong way in
which to rule. An example of the appeal to emotions is evident in the following quote, "Comrades,
comrades!" they shouted. "Don't take your own brother to his death!" But the stupid brutes, too
ignorant to realize what was happening, merely set back their ears and quickened their pace.
Boxer's face did not reappear at the window." This passage from the story is emotional and sad due
to the fact that Boxers own brethren were blindly taking him to his own death, too ignorant to
realize the wrongful act they're committing. "Man is the only creature that consumes without
producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot
run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all the animals." This quote from the story explains
how man doesn't produce, and yet

Within the song Beasts of England from the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, one is portrayed
the central idea of rebelling against the farm, which is implied by the speaker Old Major. The reader
is able to identify the essential idea through Old Majors portrayal of the conflict between the
animals in the farm and mankind, which causes animals to endure numerous obstacles throughout
their arduous lives. For example, "How does the life of an animal pass? In endless drudgery. What's
the first lesson an animal learns? To endure its slavery. How does the life of an animal end? In cruel

For instance, "Pull the rings out from your noses, tear the saddle from your back! Bit and spur must

there will no longer be any aspects, which will impede them from acquiring independence.
Furthermore, by rebelling against man, the animals of the farm would acquire the resources of their
surrounding environment, which were initially obtained by man. As seen here, "Beasts of England,
seize the prizes. Wheat and barley, oats and hay, clover, beans and mangel wurzel, shall be ours
upon that day.". Therefore, one is demonstrated that only through rebellion will the animals of the
farm attain independence, where they will be able to obtain food rather than mankind using it for
commerce. Thus, Old Major applies the conflict between mankind's supremacy over the farm
animals, it order to signify that they must rebel in order to live affluently, where they will no longer

Animal Farm, an allegory by George Orwell, discusses of the possible negative outcomes of
socialism. Obvious as it may be, Orwell's allegory is not entirely original. He shows the negative
outcomes of socialism by using fictional characters, simplistic plot, and certain settings. The
characters, the plot, and the settings are complementary because they all have a similar historical
counterpart, thus making Orwell's story not entirely original.
Historical aspects can be seen in many works of literature, making literature not entirely original,
but one story. Animal Farm, specifically intentionally warns others of the cons to socialism by using
an allegorical format. Using such a format causes the readers to seek some allusion to the characters,
the plot, the setting. Orwell uses specifically historical figures and settings as the base of his

Animalism has its similarities to the extreme version of socialism, communism, where everyone is

from exile to death. In Animal Farm, Napoleon also breaks the moral code, the sixth commandment,
"No animal shall kill any other animal" (Orwell 25). Anyone who disobeys "Napoleon's orders",
they are to be "slaughtered" (Orwell 84). Even the farm is complementary to a historical setting,
Russia. The windmill originally by Snowball, runs and supplies "the farm with electrical power"
(Orwell 48). But when Napoleon comes to power the windmill functions differently, instead "it was
used for milling corn" (Orwell 129). Like Russia, Animal Farm was not as industrial but frugal at

Essay On Animal Farm And Napoleon In Animal Farm
In the book Animal Farm, there is a character called Napoleon who is one of the main characters.
This essay will be about how George Orwell portrays him as a leader and as a character. The book is
an allegory for the Russian Revolution (8 Mar 1917 – 7 Nov 1917) and George Orwell created many
similar characters in Animal Farm as those involved in the Russian Revolution. At the start of
Napoleon's time as leader he is shown to be encouraging to the other animals and they are taught to
obey him without question. Throughout the book Napoleon is shown to be a clever conniving
character but at the beginning he seems, to the animals, to be basing all his actions on the hope all
the animals will be equal and safe. If ever the animals feel threatened, he will make sure he helps
them to gain their trust. This is shown when the windmill is destroyed "We will teach this miserable
traitor that he cannot undo our work so easily... Forward, comrades! Long live the windmill! Long
live Animal Farm!". He is quick to blame Snowball for the tragedy and exiles him; chasing him
away with his army of ferocious dogs. This action is similar to that of Lenin toward Leon Trotsky,
who was also a threat toward his power, in the Russian Revolution. By using the word "our" in
context with "our work" Napoleon instils in the animals a further belief that he is their friend and he
will work with them to promote Animalism. The audience, at this point, may be able to see that the
animals are becoming entrapped even if the animals themselves do not. When Napoleon is fully
accepted as leader by all the animals he becomes a little more confident and ruthless as he knows the
animals dare not unite and protest. Napoleon shows his 'true colours' which are cruel and selfish.
This is shown when the hens start to refuse to give their eggs up in rebellion. He "decreed that any
animal giving so much as a grain of corn to a hen should be punished by death". He also "acted
quickly and ruthlessly" which implies he does not enjoy being refused or stopped. The animals have
to watch the hens starving or be put to death themselves. Napoleon wants them to be frightened and
to be taught never to do anything of that intention. The verb "decreed" is a strong word used

Farm Subsidies Essay
Agricultural subsidies is a very complex and controversial economic topic today. It will continue to
be a hot topic as government continues it. It is largely debated in the United States as well as in
other countries. The reason it is so largely debated is because it literally have an effect on the entire
world market. Not to mention that the farm has been booming the last 5 to 10 years. This topic also
tends to draw strong opinions in our area in particular due to the large agricultural community in our
region. However, even within different states there are many supporters as well as opponents to
these government subsidies. To really begin to understand this complex topic a person really needs
to understand the basics of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2002 wheat was $3.80 a bushel so farmer's received $.06 for the difference in the guaranteed
price and $.52 for every bushel of wheat they sold ("Farm bill resources, 2008"). The idea behind
the government subsidizing of agriculture is a good idea in theory. However, it is controversial
because there are many people who oppose this policy for different reasons. There are many reasons
why it is controversial but there are a few in particular that cause the most debate. One reason that
people do not support the subsidizing is because of the sheer cost. In 2009, the U.S. government
paid over 12 billion dollars to the agricultural sector (Vogel, 2001). When you consider that fact that
the payments are being made with taxpayer dollars it explains why some people immediately oppose
it. There have been past years where the government has actually paid double that. These payments
do consume a fair portion of our governments budget. Although it is not a confirmed fact, a
Canadian report said that for every dollar earned by a U.S. farmer, 62 cents comes from some form
of government payment (Wikipedia). Basically some people view this as nothing more than
transferring income from the general tax payers to farm owners. In fact, farm subsidies is actually
the United States' largest corporate welfare program. People also blame these subsidies for
increasing poverty in some

The Allegory Of The Farm In George Orwell's Animal Farm
Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is a novella detailing a farm in England where the animals
overthrow their human masters. The whole book is an allegory of the Russian Revolution. Stalin
took control in Russia and eventually became a dictator, controlling every aspect of life and killing
those he thought were enemies. Napoleon is Stalin, as he took control of the farm. There are many
different animals that represent the different types of people in society and government. Napoleon
had become overcome with his power, which made him a tyrannical dictator, which is the most
harmful trait in government, especially when the people are all blindly following everything the
dictator says and does.
Blind followers are usually what allow dictators to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When people take power, blind followers are detrimental to society. Because they go along with
everything, they allow their leaders to control every aspect of life without the people realizing that
their lives are becoming worse. The dictator becomes selfish and starts to do things that only benefit
themselves.
Throughout Animal Farm, Napoleon was definitely selfish. It's a very detrimental trait for someone
in a leadership position, as it leads to only doing things that benefit the leader, and makes conditions
worse for the people. Napoleon and the pigs did numerous things that were selfish during the course
of the book. They changed things like the commandments to make their actions seem right and
acceptable. The pigs and dogs got better and more food and never worked, while the other animals
slaved away and starved. They never cared about anything but themselves, which is clearly seen
after they changed the commandments completely to just "All animals are equal, but some are more
equal than others" (Orwell, 134). Napoleon used this to make every single horrible action seem
okay, and almost all of the animals just go along with it, and most don't even realize that the pigs
changed all of the laws. This is very similar to many dictators in history; because of blind followers
and selfish leaders, it becomes extremely easy for said leaders to gain too much influence and
become absolute dictators.
Napoleon is the classic example of

Farm As An Allegory In Animal Farm By George Orwell

  • 1. Farm As An Allegory In Animal Farm By George Orwell Animal Farm can be an allegory for any communist revolution and subsequent collapse (if taken a little more generally), but is specifically drawing from the Russian revolutions of 1917. Many of the characters are direct parallels to members of the communist regime, and others are representatives of portions of the population. Old Major represents two different people, both Marx and Lenin. As Marx, he introduces the principles of communism to the animals. As Lenin, he puts the revolution in motion. He tells them that they should rebel, and soon. Orwell is largely positive in his portrayal of the character, he liked Marxism theoretically, believing that the execution was flawed. In the context of the book, however, Old Major, as the instigator, held much of the blame for the eventual degradation of the society. But he was eventually forgotten as the farm's condition worsened, so he started the snowball rolling, but failed to see that it would get bigger and more destructive as it rolled down the hill. Mr. Jones is Czar Nicholas the II of Russia, the last Czar. He was cruel, and uninterested in the day–to–day running of the farm, preferring to leave the job to hired hands, who were just as lazy as Jones. Nicholas the II wasn't very lazy. He was, however, disconnected from his people, and that proved to be just as ineffective and damaging. The Czar was overthrown quickly but never came back to try to reclaim Russia. He was killed by the Bolsheviks just a year after ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Dangers Of Farm In George Orwell's Animal Farm Most believe when George Orwell wrote Animal Farm he was trying to warn us about several thing, some of those things include communism, revolution, and class divide. Orwell points out the dangers of communism by putting the dangers in a understandable, digestible cute story with animals. He shows the dangers of revolution by remind us how some revolutionions just end up being a switch a power to someone worse. And he reminds us about the dangers of class divide by have a big ruling class destroy all others. George Orwell wrote "Animal Farm" to remind us the dangers of communism, revolution, and class divide. One of the main reasons Orwell wrote this book is to show us the dangers of communism. Overall it's blatantly obvious the whole book is just a big "diss" on communism by having historical events line up to the ones in the book. Even the animals ideology is called, Animalism. In the book an animal named Old Major gave a speech on the principles of "Animalism" in which Old Major stated, ""Now, comrades, what is the nature of this life of ours? Let us face it: our lives are miserable, laborious, and short." and ""Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all the animals" (Animal Farm Pg. 3) . This kind of talk sounds awfully similar to the teachings of Marx and Lenin the same people who eventually influenced and stared the russian revolution which would lead the the creation of the U.S.S.R thenceforth 20 million dead. Furthermore, it seems that Orwell was trying to compare some of his character to notorious communists so that he could warn us. That is one way Orwell was trying to warn us in Animal Farm. Another thing Orwell was trying to warn us in Animal Farm is the dangers of revolution. See, most revolutions have a change of power from one bad person to a worse person. Some historical examples include French Revolution which saw power go from the monarch to Napoleon, Iranian Revolution which saw power go from the the king to the khomeini, and the Russian Revolution. Orwell was warning us by again having the events of the Russian Revolution line ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Similarities Between Animal Farm And Animal Farm Two visions; Different Results In George Orwell's novel Animal Farm he asserts that following "blindly", will lead to government abuse and corruption. Orwell's assertion brings life to the philosophy that a utopian atmosphere can never exist. Orwell's purpose is to deliver the idea of communism not being successful and to make the audience reading not want to get into communism. George Orwell informs the young audience of the danger with communism. Orwell was a very cynical individual when it came to writing "Animal Farm". There were many similarities and differences between Martin Luther King Jr. and the character, Old Major in Animal Farm. One similar political equality between the two figures is they both had a vision or dream of inspiring the masses of people to dream of a better future. between two groups of people. Despite having so many similarities between the two there are also several differences as well. Such as, the animals had different rights to fight for, for example, the animals were being overworked by Mr. Jones and they were not receiving enough food. On the other side, the blacks, during the Martin Luther King Jr. time period, were not able to go in the same bathroom as whites. The Blacks had restrictions to their rights in the idea of not being able to pursue certain circumstances as the whites did. The historical figure Martin Luther King Jr. had many similarities and differences with the character in Animal Farm, Old Major. Both individuals had visions of rebellion but Martin Luther had the mentality of peaceful rebellion, while olf major wanted violence. The significant events between Martin Luther King Jr. and Old Major was the Beasts of England speech and the I have a Dream speech. Old Major used Beasts of England to show the animals his vision or dream for the farm. Also, Martin Luther King Jr. used I have a Dream to bring light to the idea of black rights. Old Major and Martin Luther King Jr. both had both a goal in their mind for what they want there atmosphere to be. In Animal Farm, the speech Beasts of England was used and it said "Beasts of England, Beasts of England, Beasts of every land and clime, hearken to my joyful tidings" (orwell 12) The quotes from the ... • 13. Farm As An Allegory In George Orwell's Animal Farm Orwell's Animal Farm is an allegory because he used animals to represent the people of the Soviet Union, the farm as the country, and everything they did and said represented the real life events that happened in the Soviet Union. Throughout the entire story he used hidden meanings. This was done by the words and actions of the animals, as well as, landmarks and the windmill. Before Major died he stated in his speech that "No animal in England is free. The life of an animal is misery and slavery: that is the plain truth." The animals decided to start a rebellion to be rid of Mr. Jones. This also happened in the Soviet Union. When the animals talked about Animalism they were referring to communism. To start the pigs were equal to all the other animals on the farm. After the rebellion the pigs took over saying they were smarter than all the others. The work of teaching and organizing the others fell naturally upon the pigs, who were generally recognized as being the cleverest of the animals. Then the pigs became corrupt by all the power the other animals let them have. This power left the pigs to rule with tyranny. The Soviet Union leader was also corrupt and ruled with tyranny. All the habits of Man are evil. And, above all, no animal must ever tyrannise over his own kind. Weak or strong, clever or simple, we are all brothers. No animal must ever kill any other animal. All animals are equal. This was not true because all the animals except for the pigs worked hard but the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Animal Farm "Animal Farm" Essay Whether it may be in the past or the present, power can change a person into doing horrible things. To some, they will use any means of tactics to obtain power. In "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, he uses the story to portray the Russian Revolution. One event that happened in "Animal Farm" was when Napoleon starved the hens to death when they weren't willing to lay eggs. A historical event that could relate to this is when Stalin starved millions of his people when they didn't want to work. Through the uses of symbolism in the story, it reveals how too much power tends to change a person by that they do horrible things, which causes conflict between individual rights and societal concerns. Napoleon, who symbolizes Joseph ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the story, Napoleon, who thought that if he had the power he could do anything, took milk from the cows to give it to the pigs, while all the other animals are fearing that Mr. Jones is coming back. Likewise, Napoleon uses the possibility of Mr. Jone coming back to threaten the other animals through propaganda and fear. Although Napoleon takes milk from the cows, he states that "Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples ( this has been proved by Science, comrades... It is for your sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples. Do you use know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back! Yes, Jones would come back!... Now if there was one thing that the animals were completely certain of, it was that they did not want Jones to come back (52–53)." From the story, it tells that Napoleon uses fear to manipulate the animals into believing that without them, the pigs, Mr. Jones would come back. The pigs use that point since they know that the animals do not want Mr. Jones to come back and reclaim the farm. Well, Napoleon also uses the word "proven by science" to gain the animal's trust that they didn't do it for themselves but for the animals. It also reminded the animals that the pigs are essential to running the farm. Napoleon's behavior is similar to Joseph Stalin's uses of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Big Farms Research Paper There are many differences between big farms and traditional farms such as environmental issues, animal waste, antibiotic use, health issues, animal treatment, and economic involvement with their communities just to name a few. When it comes to animal waste issues, industrial or big farm livestock have a larger number of animals in one area, as a result there can be too much manure concentration for one area of land to handle, and also is stock–piled in large lagoons or holding pits. Over application of manure can happen as the costs of transportation are high making it more expensive to get rid of it. Excessive amounts of manure storage cause emissions of gases like ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and methane into the air causing significant odor issues and health problems. Small family farms only raise what the land is capable of handling, and use composted manure to fertilize, instead of commercial fertilizers and chemicals. Health issues play a significant role as well between the two types of farms. Big farms over use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance, the excessive chemical odors and fumes used can lead to headaches for workers, respiratory issues and nausea. Bacteria and parasites from animal waste which are chlorine resistant may cause human disease. Local, small family farms are much more likely to raise and grow food without ... Up until 2002, it was, pure and simple, a farm, selling our beef, lamb and free range eggs to wholesalers. However in 2002 they were invited to be a founding member of the farm market set up in Dungannon. At the market they sold their lamb and beef which they reared at the farm. They would leave their lamb mature for 10–14 days on the bone and this was because they believed this gives it a better taste. Their beef is left to mature for 28 days and this is to make it tender and also to gives it a better taste. Thanks to the setup of the Dungannon farm market they decided to start their own business selling their goods at their own farm in a shop. They converted and old pig house in a shop which features 12–foot butchery serve over counter, three other chill cabinets for their own and other locally sourced products. They also stocked fruit and vegetables plus some ambient lines. This year Cloughbane farm shop was nominated for 2 awards at the Grow Make Eat Drink 2016 Awards. One of the awards they were nominated for was Best Small Food / Drink Producer and the other award was Best Food / Drink Marketing Campaign. Cloughbane have recently signs a contract with Tesco for their ready meals worth £450,000. This is a huge deal for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Animal Farm Vs Animal Farm Humans have aspired to develop and implement an ideal society. A society is a fragile, intricate concept that contains many important factors. Throughout history, there have been countless attempts to create a flawless society. None of these attempts have resulted in a perfect society. Many attempts have failed; however, many have been successful. The novels Lord of the Flies, by William Golding and Animal Farm, by George Orwell exhibit two different societies that both result in failure due to a desire for power and the regulations and rules that are established. Lord of the Flies is a novel that takes place during a nuclear war. It depicts the story of several young children taken away from the real world and forced to live by themselves on a deserted island. The novel describes the childrens' attempts to govern themselves and create a society. There are two clear leaders, Ralph and Jack who stand out from the beginning of the story. When the children arrive on the island, they find a conch and instinctually accept without question that whoever holds the conch possesses the power to speak: "Ralph smiled and held up the conch for silence. 'Listen, everybody'" (Golding 23). The conch is an early symbol of power and authority. This also symbolizes hope for their society. It creates order and unites everyone under the conch. The conch represents the power to make decisions and voice opinion. As the novel progresses, this universally accepted rule becomes obsolete and is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Personal Statement On Family Farms Family farms serve as both a place to live and a place to work and is unique as both a home and a workplace. Growing up on a cattle farm, with horses and the necessary machinery, I was exposed to many conditions that have taught me valuable lessons and allowed me to thrive as a young individual. One of the main reasons that I have been able to thrive under these circumstances is because of my family members ensuring my safety. My family has always been rigorous about teaching me how to stay safe from the many dangers on our farm that could leave me vulnerable to injury and illness. On our farm, we consider the health and safety of our family to be our number one priority. When I was young, my parents restricted my access to worksites on the farm and were certain to reduce my exposure to hazardous situations to ensure my safety and well–being. I was prohibited to go near the cattle without one of my adult family members being with me and was not allowed to roam around the farm without the supervision of an adult. I became progressively mesmerized by the livestock on our farm and wanted to be more involved with them so that I could pursue my curiosity. While this worried my parents to a certain degree, they supported my curiosity and began to give me modified tasks and chores that I was capable of doing without putting me in harm's way. Before performing any of these tasks however, they ensured that I was properly informed on what I was to do and how I was to do them. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This includes the voltage on the fences around the farm, the temperature of the milk that is in the vat and the activity of the water pump. A constant monitoring system of these three important farming aspects could improve farm profitability. A mobile phone application will be designed to incorporate monitoring of these three activities. If the fences do not have the required voltage on them this can result in animals escaping and injuring themselves. This can be difficult to monitor as currently to do this you are required to be on the farm using a fence tester. The milk temperature is required to be below 7 degrees Celsius within 3 hours by the milk company to ensure it is safe for human consumption. Many of the characters are interpreted as people involved in the Russian Revolution, along with events and objects in the novel that are symbolized in the revolution. Although many of the characters events, and objects represent aspects of revolution, like Mr. Jones represents Nicholas II, there are a lot of symbols too. When Mr. Jones turned to drinking, he was arriving to the farm very late and would forget to feed the animals for days at a time. When the animals decided they had enough of his careless acts, they rebelled against him. The animals chased Mr. Jones out of the farm and the pigs took over. This an allegory of the army turning on Nicholas II during a revolution that randomly started in 1917, just like the animals' rebellion. The army eventually exiled him and set up a temporary government, otherwise known as "the pigs." In the novel, it states that "At last they could stand no longer. Abolishing Farm Subsidies In The United States In the 1930s, during the Great Depression, Secretary of agriculture Henry Wallace introduced farm subsidies as a "temporary solution to deal with an emergency." That emergency was a collapse of farm incomes with 25 percent of the population depending on agricultural earnings (Riedl, 2007). But today farmers make up just 1 percent of the population and farm incomes are well above the national average, making the original purpose of subsidies irrelevant (Kelley, 2016). The things I valued most about growing up on the farm consisted of learning new skills, having plenty of personal space, and having experiences that people who grew up in the city would not have had. Personally, the most valuable quality I have learned in the seventeen years I have been alive is responsibility. Whether it is helping with harvest, feeding the animals or filling the furnace with wood, safety is an important aspect of all actions on the farm. On average, there are fourteen deaths each year that could be avoided by educating people about the significance of safety and health hazards on the farm. Informing people on the dangers of the farm involve awareness of machinery, chemicals, electricity, and tiredness. As many individuals know, there are many types of machinery on the farm. After having a taste of power, the pigs lose themselves in their lust for ultimate power. Because of the supreme position of the pigs in the farm, a minority controls the majority of the animals, their greed for power leads to the corruption of the power. First of all, Napoleon uses dogs to expel Snowball in order to have exclusive power. Napoleon starts to against every suggestions Snowball proposes at the beginning. In the movie, towards the beginning, the animals on the farm, especially the pigs wanted a change with their standards of living. So they decided to get everyone to remove the Farmer. I think of this as in Marxism the people trying to get rid of the government. They held a meeting to decide what to do and all of the pigs sat in the front all looking for the best spot. I also translate this to be the opposite of Marxism because they thought higher than everyone else, which is not Marxism where everyone is equal. After the animal kicked out the Farmer, they set up laws that related to Marxist ideas. For example, all animals are equal which is what Marxist wanted after seeing the working class in the industrial revolution. He wanted to have a society where everyone got equal shares on a business, employees and managers. This resembles what happens in the animal farm for the beginning of the movie. However, for us, this opportunity offered much more. It gave us a source of income, character growth, experience, and most of all–it gave us perspective. From about the fourth grade all the way up to the seventh, I spent my summers toiling on that one–twenty acre piece of land. Many of the experiences that I have there play a significant role in who I am today. We each carried a spud bar, a seventeen–pound bar with one flat circle end that is about three inches in diameter, and a shovel. We made a competition out of who could sturdily place their post the fastest. Each post took about eight minutes, after figuring out the best way to do it. With every post I managed to put into the ground, I grew tired and hot. The sun burned down on us; my arms had begun to feel weak, I was two post behind my brother. • 70. Farm As An Allegory In George Orwell's Animal Farm An author who has been praised though the years for his revolutionary ideas and works, George Orwell has written everything from poems to essays. He liked uncovering hidden truths; consequently, doing it by writing political works like Animal Farm. On the surface George Orwell's novel Animal Farm is about a group of neglected animals who overthrow their owner and take control of the farm. However, under the surface this novel is an allegory detailing the events of the Russian Revolution. The author's use of anthropomorphism and common diction lead us to believe he intended the novel to be read by the "everyday man" or lay person. The novel is written as warning to readers within its central theme that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Orwell uses stylistic devices (such as symbolism and irony) and tone (hope twisted to despair) in Animal Farm to tell the tragic tale of animal rebellion at Manor Farm. The author wrote this novel in response to his opinion of the Russian Revolution; he wanted to consciously use political and artistic purpose in the book to talk to the people. Ultimately, Orwell effectively fuses his "political" and "artistic" purpose into a single powerful work of art in his short novel Animal Farm. One of Orwell's works that could help us analyze and understand his intent for Animal Farm is his essay "Why I Write". George Orwell's essay "Why I Write" is about the evolution of Orwell's style of writing from a child to the time when written and how his opinions on writing have changed. Perhaps the author wrote "Why I Write" because he wants to help explain to the world how Animal Farm was written and the thought process behind it. Orwell's intended audience for this work is writers and readers of his books. Writers would be interested as it gives advice and his beliefs on writing, but his readers would be interested because it talks about his books more in depth and his purpose. The narrator in this essay is the author himself and it is in first person describing events and his thoughts/emotions. Orwell used some stylistic devices in "Why I Write" but the main two that are showcased are rhetoric and analogies. Overall, the tone throughout the entire work is reflective but in ... The main thing that prompted Orwell to create this piece, were the rising amounts of writers using euphemisms and sometimes absolute vagueness to get their point across. Orwell wrote this essay with the intentions of informing those reading that many people back then used a truly dry form of the English language to persuade and essentially shape the reader's mind while warning those who were intelligent enough to understand. Throughout this writing, Orwell spoke from a first person perspective. The author used literary devices such as rhetoric several times in this essay; using pathos more often than that of ethos or logos. For example in an excerpt from his essay, he talked about how an English professor was defending Russian totalitarianism. The job that used to employ the largest amount of people in the United States has lost the support and the respect of the American people. The Jeffersonian Ideal of a nation of farmers has been tossed aside to be replaced by a nation of white–collar workers. The family farm is under attack and it is not being protected. The family farm can help the United States economically by creating jobs in a time when many cannot afford the food in the stores. The family farm is the answer to many of the tough questions facing the United States today, but these small farms are going bankrupt all too often. The government's policy on farming is the largest factor in what farms succeed, but simple economics, large corporations, and society as a whole influence the decline in family farms; small changes in these areas will help break up the huge corporate farms, keeping the small family farm afloat. Horse Power Farm is located in Penobscot, Maine and owned by Paul Birdsall. The distinguishing features are on the farm's focus for producing vegetables and timber, and relying on their horses instead of machinery. Paul's farm is specifically a mixed practice as they do have a tractor, but draft horses are the key component. Another unique aspect of this farm is that as Paul said, "training apprentices is the most important thing they do." Without the apprentices help, they are limited in the amount of work they can get done. Lakeside Orchards is located in Kennebec County and is owned by Steve and Marilyn Meyerhans. They also own The Apple Farm located in Fairfield, Maine. The distinguishing features for these two farms are the apples and apple products produced. They also have two farm stands, one of which is opened year round. Unlike the other two videos I watched, this couple had no prior experience before buying Lakeside Orchards. The last ... These are designed to sift the potatoes and transfer them to another row so the harvester is able to pick up multiple rows at once. In addition, Ayotte Farm was unique in that they're involved in a contract system. Because of this they mainly grow a certain type of potato for the french–fry industry. • 106. Animal Farm Animal Farm by George Orwell, an allegorical reflection of the Russian Revolution, was quite the opposite of my average read. Opening up a novel about a dystopian society ruled by animals gave me a whole new perspective about equal rights. The animals in this book endured so many difficulties that could've been avoided if humans weren't the most dominate species. Which is why I can understand where they're coming from. Who wouldn't want to rebel against something so unjust? Any activity we do impacts the planet more than any other kind, so the animals in this story did have a right to find that unfair. Though some characters blew it out of proportion. It makes one think, "How come we humans are given the upper hand and animals are forced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After their farmer Jones was overthrown, these three pigs and their comrades attempted to rid the farm of any accessories made for animals by throwing them in a fire. In chapter two, when asked if ribbons were allowed, Snowball responded, "Ribbons should be considered as clothes, which are the mark of a human being. All animals should go naked." For some time after this was stated, animals went bare. However, in chapter ten, Napoleon and the other pigs contradicted this concept, wearing clothes from Mr. Jones's wardrobe. It states, "Napoleon himself appearing in a black coat, ratcatcher breeches, and leather leggings, while his favorite sow appeared in the watered silk dress in which Mrs. Jones wore on Sundays." Technically, the pigs did not go against the third commandment they created that read, "No animal shall wear clothes" because it no longer existed. Instead there was only a single commandment that stated, "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others." So rather than all animals being fair, the pigs received special treatment while the others continued to suffer. Which is the same as when Jones was around, because he made all the animals do the harsh labor while he kept all the proceeds for himself, living in a lovely house and drinking loads of alcohol. The pigs were even walking around on their hind legs like him, and engaging in business with humans. The difference between them was unrecognizable, as indicated on the final page. At this point Napoleon never realized that his mentality was equivalent to Jones's and that he was no better at controlling the farm than he was. Animal Farm The Simplicity of Animal Farm In the book Animal Farm, George Orwell uses a thinly veiled style of writing to clearly convey the deep political ideas he was trying to give off which helped make the novel a timeless tale. Many of the literary elements used in this book such as characters, theme, plot, etc. help add to the simplicity of his writing and are so clearly political references that it makes it obvious to the reader what it is he's saying, and who it is he's calling out. Throughout the book we read the many ways that the animals turned a once noble society to a very dishonest government, but Orwell isn't a very complicated writer and used the characters and political messages instead of fancy writing techniques. With desired hopes of being joyous, equal, and initially free for autonomy, In the end, however, the new rule becomes a cruel tyranny of its own led by dictating pigs. George Orwell uses various language forms and features to convey ideas that are evident in his novella Animal Farm. This political allegory reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution in an animal fable, although using pigs as dictators can come across merely humorous, George uses this to display his strong dissatisfaction with the results of the communist revolution. Themes shown in Animal far are: Leadership and Corruption, Lies and Deceit, Rules and Order, Violence and lastly Cunning and Cleverness. All these themes are either shown through the characters of the novel or are shown through the events of Orwell's novel. George Orwell's Animal farm shows a lot of leadership, power and how it can be easily corrupted. The most evident event of this theme being portrayed is when Napoleon uses fear and propaganda to rule over the farm. Despite this, their main support system was farm labor and "hand trades" (blacksmithing, carriage–making, and milling). Farming was a crucial part of Piscataway life; they had not yet been exposed to the technological advances of the day as much of their labor was still performed by hand. Even though steel plows and chemical fertilizers had been invented in the earlier 1800s; these were not used in quaint Piscataway. The Civil War caused an economic boom and bust cycle in Piscataway's farm life. Farm life prospered as inflation caused farmland in Piscataway to peak at $140 per acre, which is about $2,477 in 2015. After the civil war, land prices then continued to decline until the 1900s. Also, the expansion of factories and other forms of "urban employment" caused competition for laborers as factories generally offered better wages. In 1870 the presence of new railroads brought a new population of people who relied on the train system to get to work. This provided links between Piscataway and the outside world as farm life began to decline. However, Piscataway still remained largely rural (Meuly). • 126. Farm As An Allegory In George Orwell's Animal Farm a. Orwell's "Animal Farm" is an allegory due to the usage of the concept of animals on a farm, which is usually a lighthearted subject, being used to reflect the events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917. The events in the story also reflect on the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. In the beginning of the story, the Major, whom is an old middle white boar, encourages the other animals to start a rebellion. He wanted to kick out the owner of the farm, Mr. Jones, so that animals may instead rule the farm. "Why then do we continue in this miserable condition? Because nearly the whole of the produce of our labor is stolen from us by human beings. There, comrades, is the answer to all our problems. It is summed up in a single word––Man. Man is the only real enemy we have. Remove Man from the scene, and the root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished forever." This statement was mentioned by Old Major, who was the leader of Manor Farm, to convince the other animals that there should be a change. This eventually led to the Rebellion. In this quote, human beings represent communists, while the animals represent the working class citizens, and everyone affected by communism. In this story, Orwell was able to use animal characters to depict his message. He was able to convey a serious matter, in a less harsh way. b. Orwell uses pathos and logos to persuade the readers that communism was the wrong way in which to rule. An example of the appeal to emotions is evident in the following quote, "Comrades, comrades!" they shouted. "Don't take your own brother to his death!" But the stupid brutes, too ignorant to realize what was happening, merely set back their ears and quickened their pace. Boxer's face did not reappear at the window." This passage from the story is emotional and sad due to the fact that Boxers own brethren were blindly taking him to his own death, too ignorant to realize the wrongful act they're committing. "Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all the animals." This quote from the story explains how man doesn't produce, and yet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The reader is able to identify the essential idea through Old Majors portrayal of the conflict between the animals in the farm and mankind, which causes animals to endure numerous obstacles throughout their arduous lives. As seen here, "Beasts of England, seize the prizes. Wheat and barley, oats and hay, clover, beans and mangel wurzel, shall be ours upon that day.". • 142. Essay On Animal Farm And Napoleon In Animal Farm In the book Animal Farm, there is a character called Napoleon who is one of the main characters. This essay will be about how George Orwell portrays him as a leader and as a character. The book is an allegory for the Russian Revolution (8 Mar 1917 – 7 Nov 1917) and George Orwell created many similar characters in Animal Farm as those involved in the Russian Revolution. At the start of Napoleon's time as leader he is shown to be encouraging to the other animals and they are taught to obey him without question. Throughout the book Napoleon is shown to be a clever conniving character but at the beginning he seems, to the animals, to be basing all his actions on the hope all the animals will be equal and safe. If ever the animals feel threatened, he will make sure he helps them to gain their trust. This is shown when the windmill is destroyed "We will teach this miserable traitor that he cannot undo our work so easily... Forward, comrades! Long live the windmill! Long live Animal Farm!". He is quick to blame Snowball for the tragedy and exiles him; chasing him away with his army of ferocious dogs. This action is similar to that of Lenin toward Leon Trotsky, who was also a threat toward his power, in the Russian Revolution. By using the word "our" in context with "our work" Napoleon instils in the animals a further belief that he is their friend and he will work with them to promote Animalism. The audience, at this point, may be able to see that the animals are becoming entrapped even if the animals themselves do not. When Napoleon is fully accepted as leader by all the animals he becomes a little more confident and ruthless as he knows the animals dare not unite and protest. Napoleon shows his 'true colours' which are cruel and selfish. This is shown when the hens start to refuse to give their eggs up in rebellion. He "decreed that any animal giving so much as a grain of corn to a hen should be punished by death". He also "acted quickly and ruthlessly" which implies he does not enjoy being refused or stopped. The animals have to watch the hens starving or be put to death themselves. Napoleon wants them to be frightened and to be taught never to do anything of that intention. There are many reasons why it is controversial but there are a few in particular that cause the most debate. One reason that people do not support the subsidizing is because of the sheer cost. Because they go along with everything, they allow their leaders to control every aspect of life without the people realizing that their lives are becoming worse. The dictator becomes selfish and starts to do things that only benefit themselves. Throughout Animal Farm, Napoleon was definitely selfish. It's a very detrimental trait for someone in a leadership position, as it leads to only doing things that benefit the leader, and makes conditions worse for the people. Napoleon and the pigs did numerous things that were selfish during the course of the book. They changed things like the commandments to make their actions seem right and acceptable. The pigs and dogs got better and more food and never worked, while the other animals slaved away and starved. They never cared about anything but themselves, which is clearly seen after they changed the commandments completely to just "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others" (Orwell, 134). Napoleon used this to make every single horrible action seem okay, and almost all of the animals just go along with it, and most don't even realize that the pigs changed all of the laws.
