Typical and Atypical Abuse
Physical and emotional abuse can originate from any source but the majority of the abuse generates
from parental or adult figures and is direct toward a timid figure, typically a child. The abuser
commonly chooses a more timid recipient because they will be less likely to stand up against the
abuser. Physical abuse is maltreatment that involves actual contact between one body part of a
person and an other body part of an other person, such as hitting or slapping. Emotional abuse
consists of just the opposite: maltreatment that is directed to harming the individual psychologically,
such as negative comments or put downs (National Exchange Club Foundation, 2000).

They will typically have more difficulty learning in the classroom because of responses similar to
these (Prothrow–Smith, December 1995). A student that is being abused at home is more likely to be
withdrawn in the classroom and have a lower self–esteem level because they feel that if they answer
a question incorrectly they will be negatively punished in some manor (NAEYC, 1997). Students
show an inability to cope with the stress levels that are associated with school and are therefore
more likely to give up. In fact, maltreated children do not differ on perceived academic ability but
their scores on actual tests are significantly lower (Kinard, 2001). One major area that is extremely
important to the growth of children is how they interact with other children while at school. Abuse
in the home will negatively effect social growth because it influences how comfortable a child feels
around other people. The fear of punishment, physical or verbal, determines how a child approaches
an other child. Every student in school will most likely be unable to perfect each subject, but a
student that is abused is unable to grasp this concept. They feel the need to perfect each subject and

Reflection Of A Colloquium
Since I am a freshman, and this was my first colloquium, I did not know what to expect. I select
Greek life, bullying in adulthood, and the Great Blasket Islands. Bullying in adulthood got cancelled
and I went to human trafficking and domestic violence instead. I was very interested in learning new
information about these interesting topics. I was especially excited about hearing Mrs. Gertz talk
about her trip to the Great Blasket Islands. I have her for English and she got me hooked the first
time she mentioned she would be doing her chat over her trip. The first chat I went to was over
Greek life and the whole era in general. The most interesting story that the professor told was about
Oedipus. Laius and Jocasta are the king and queen on Thebes. The king goes to a fortune teller
because they are having trouble conceiving a child. He is told, they will have a child, but his son
will kill him and marry and have children with the queen. They send the child to someone far away,
so the prophesy cannot be filled. The young boy ends up becoming a king somewhere else then goes
out and meets his father and they fight and he kills his father. He had no idea who the man was. He
ventures out and kills a sphynx and then becomes king because of that. He never thought the place
he now ended up at was supposed to be his true home. He marries the current queen and the

Informative Essay On The Movie Bully
Description of Documentary: When children are pushed to commit foolish activities or suicide
because of bullies, one can tell there is something wrong with the way situations are being handled
in our society. The documentary, Bully, presents countless examples of the effects of bullying and
how poorly circumstances are managed. Through instances resulting in juvenile detention or taking
one's own life, the documentary displays various ways kids deal with torment. As we follow the
lives of five different youths suffering at the hands of their peers, we see just how much these kids
go through with little to no support.
The first family we meet has recently lost their son, Tyler, to suicide at the age of 17. Tyler's dad
recounts the way Tyler transformed from being a bubbly child to a loner. Tyler's dad discusses how
he knew that Tyler was getting shoved into lockers and being told to hang himself, and that he
understands why Tyler took his own life. Tyler's mom then shows us Tyler's old room where he
committed suicide, how his younger brother, Troy, found him, and how they changed the room into
an office to work on their anti–bullying stuff. Tyler's parents are both extremely understanding and
want to celebrate Tyler's life by helping others experiencing mistreatment. Unfortunately, the school

The spread of Jamaican culture and Rastafarianism can be accredited to many events and
technical advances in communication. Bob Marley is one of the main influences the spread of
Jamaican culture and Rastafarianism due to the lyrical rhetoric used in his popular music. Growing
up as an impoverished youth, Marley struggled to create a music career where his voice as well as
others could be heard globally.

Gilroy defines Marley calling him the greatest man in reggae music and the greatest leader and
proponent of the spread of the Rasta religion. This article poses
Marley "as an icon for the struggle for justice, peace and human rights" 5 not just another musician
or pop icon.
Although opposed to many established governmental policies, Marley was not an anti–
establishment advocate. He was an individual that believed governments and everyday people, such
as those who may not be involved in politics, needed to look out for their fellow humans and treat
all people equally regardless of ethnicity and income.
Marley used his music to bring many social issues to the forefront that had previously been
suppressed. Many of these issues were not suppressed because of their nature, but because of the
lack of influence Jamaica had on the world.
The country of Jamaica is highly dependant on tourism and agricultural exports such as raw sugar.
By–products of the raw sugar production are molasses and rum. Due to these limited industries,
most citizens of Jamaica are of the working class and this

The authors of this article, Psychology researchers at Clemson University, include three various
studies in their paper. The first study examines the rates of cyberbullying, the second study
examines the perceptions of cyberbullying, and the third is an extension of the first two studies
combined. This article includes firm evidence that confirms the large role that social media has
grown to play in the world of cyberbullying. For example, in Study Two, it was found that "The
most common social media venues by which people reported becoming victims of cyberbullying
were Twitter and Facebook" (19). The third study in this article was one that did not appear in many
other articles I read. Instead of being conducted in the form of a survey, it was done by a "trained
computer system to detect and interpret cyberbullying" (21). Basically, this computer was given

Nursery schools, pre schools, and playgroups all provide learning and play activities, family
support, early intervention and childcare for all children under the age of five years old.

parents providing education for both, full day care provision, parenting advice, and health and
family support, or to a primary school. Where as pre schools and playgroups are normally privately
owned and operated, offering childcare, play and education activities.
Since 2004 all children in the UK aged 3 and 4 years old have been entitled to free places at
nurseries and pre–school and even under the care of a childminder for up to 12.5 hours per week,

I was fortunate to participate in a field trip with the Miami–Dade County School of Education to the
Holocaust Museum, located at 1933–1945 Meridian Ave, Miami Beach Florida. At the museum,
every statue and picture displayed are constructed to educate the public on the history of the
horrifying events that happened not too long ago. Even the address of the museum is the recognition
of such an unforgettable and tragic event, the Holocaust, 1933 through 1945. At the entrance of the
museum stands a statue of a mother figure draped in a blanket looking somber as she embraces her
children at her side. As I looked at their angelic like faces I already started to sense the hopelessness

The abuser commonly chooses a more timid recipient because they will be less likely to stand up against the abuser. Physical abuse is maltreatment that involves actual contact between one body part of a person and an other body part of an other person, such as hitting or slapping.
