This lesson plan outlines an addition lesson for a grade 2 mathematics class. The objectives are for students to be able to form the number 8 using two sets of objects and to fill in a missing addend in a number sentence where the sum is 8. The teacher will demonstrate combining sets to make 8 and have students practice with bottle caps. Students will also complete a worksheet assessing their ability to draw combinations of sets that make 8 and complete related number sentences.

• Teacher: “Today we are going to be making sets of 8.”
“I will show some ways of making 8.”
• Teacher will display some ways of combining sets of object to make 8.
Example:
• The class will then count the elements of each set then say the number sentence associated with
it.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES / EXPERIENCES:
• After several examples of combining sets to make 8 are shown on television screen, the students
will use bottle caps to make 8 using different combinations.
• The teacher will ask several students to say the number sentence they have formed by partitioning
the bottle caps.
• This will be repeated several times to see how many combinations of making 8 the class can
discover.
ASSESMENT PROCEDURES:
• The teacher will distribute a worksheet which will allow the students to draw several combination of
making 8 and also completing number sentences to have the sum equal to 8.
• Teacher will evaluate exercise worksheets to ascertain if students correctly combinations to show 8
and also correctly complete the number sentences.
