3. • I was born and raised in Ecuador. I never imagined that
I’d be teaching here! After attending college to study
Business and Administration, I went on a missionary trip to
Brazil and that is where I found my real passion, teaching.
After being trained extensively in teaching, and taking
education classes here in the U.S., I am as excited as ever
to teach. I’ve been happily married for twenty years. God
gave us one miracle child whose name is Fermin (he’s
now 17). As a family, we had beautiful moments in our
country, owning our own business, going to church, and
dreaming about the future. But, God re-routed our plans.
And now, I’ve taught at ZCS for seventh years, and this
will be my eighth year teaching. Maybe you remember
me from teaching preschool, third, second, and also
fourth grade. I love being useful and giving it my all in any
circumstances. I absolutely love it. I’m very happy to
work with you and your child this year, and I know we will
have a great year in Second Grade. I’m so excited to
start!

5. 5
El GRAN-TESORO OF THE WEEK – We will take
turns celebrating how wonderfully God has
created each one of us. On your child’s
special week we will display pictures and
information about your child. I will send you a
reminder to bring in up to 5 pictures, and I will
hang up the “El gran Tesoro Sheet” of
information which must be returned the
Monday of your child’s star week or anytime
before. If you need to switch weeks, feel free
to switch with someone and let me know. We
will do this in ABC order throughout the year.
6. 6
ABSENTEE PROCEDURE – Please
contact the school office each day
that your child is sick. If you know
your child is going to be absent more
than a day, either call me or ask the
office to give me that information. I
will send any homework home with a
sibling or you can stop by and pick
up your child’s homework.
7. 7
TRANSPORTATION – If your child will
be using a different mode of
transportation than usual to go
home, please send me a note/email
informing me of the change. If you
will be picking up your child and you
would like him or her to meet you
outside, your child may leave the
classroom after the busses have left
for the day.
8. 8
SCHOOL’S LUNCH – All students have a lunch
card and a milk card. Payments can be sent
to school by check made payable to Zeeland
Public Schools. If your child’s account is low,
ZPD will send a notice home with the account
balance. There are 2 different types of
lunches your child can choose –A, or B.
Because we will begin our day with instruction
immediately at 8:40 it will be extremely
important for the children to know what they
are having for lunch that day. Please remind
them each morning about their lunch
selection.
9. 9
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS – We celebrate each child’s
birthday as close to the day as possible. Summer
birthdays can be celebrated on the half birthday, just
let me know if you plan to do so. The children usually
bring a small treat to pass out.
Usually the children bring in one more treat than the
needed, to share with Mr. Van Dyk. He has a little
birthday treat to give as well.
In order to alleviate any hurt feelings, if you plan on
having a birthday party at your home and would like
to invite all the boys or girls, feel free to send the
invitations to school. If you decide to have a small
party with a few friends, please send the invitations
through mail or email.
10. 10
CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE – At the beginning of the year we will talk about
what it means to be in a second grade classroom and how God wants us
to act when we are here. We will discuss what it means to respect God,
each other and ourselves, as well as how to do our job of being second
graders. At the beginning of each week your child will receive 50 pesos
(in increments of 5 pesos bills), 10 pesos for each day of classes that
week. These pesos will be used to teach savings and spending as well as
monitoring behavior: 1) students will use pesos to buy minutes of free time
on Friday afternoons (up to 10 minutes, 5 pesos=2 minutes), 2) students
must save at least 25 pesos each week (or more if they earn extra) in their
“savings account” which they can use at our “Mercadito” a few times a
year. So, losing pesos during the week will result in less free time and could
also result in less money to spend at our market. Earning extra pesos will
mean the full 10 minutes of free time as well as a bonus of more pesos to
spend at the market. If a child has difficulty complying with the classroom
rules, we will talk over the problem together and decide on a
consequence that that will help him or her remember what to do in the
future. Consequences will be worked out together using the Love & Logic
model and will differ depending on the issue and the child. Often, but not
always, part of the consequence may include giving up some of their
hard-earned pesos. If your child has difficulty with anything specific, I will
let you know.

week with the expectation that it will be
completed that night and sent home the
next morning. Books will always go home
on Fridays, sometimes more frequently.
However, even if your child doesn’t bring
home a book it is expected that they are
reading every single night for at least 15
minutes.

HEALTHY SNACKS AND LUNCHES are
strongly encouraged as they give
students energy and attentiveness to
learn as much as possible.
