Donald sonn discusses prostate cancer
1. Donald Sonn Discusses Prostate Cancer
One of the specialties of Donald Sonn, longtime Urologic Surgeon at the Urology Group of Western
New England, is the use of robotic surgery, via the state of the art da Vinci system, for Prostate
Cancer. Well-educated and with over 17 years of medical experience, Sonn continues to use this
advanced medical tool to provide patients with prostate cancer the expert treatment and care they
deserve.
Prostate Cancer, as Donald Sonn knows, consists of malignant cells that form within the tissues of the
prostate. One of the most commonly diagnosed forms of cancers in men (1 in 6 will be diagnosed over
the course of a lifetime), prostate cancer isn’t an easy condition for patients, though through advanced
screening, awareness and early diagnosis, most of these cancers can be localized and treated before
they begin the spread elsewhere.
As Donald Sonn knows, prostate cancer is responsible for the deaths of more people than any other
form of cancer, with the exception of lung cancer. About 186,000 new cases of the disease were
diagnosed in the US in 2008, and it is estimated that just over 1.8 million American men are currently
survivors of this difficult condition.
Donald Sonn and the Urology Group of Western New England team understand the most effective
treatment options for prostate cancer, as well as how such things as the cancer’s stage, the age of the
patient, the Gleason score and the patient’s general health all help the physician to determine what each
patient’s most effective treatment options really are. When the physician believes that the cancer has
been localized, there are five common options for treatment, including:
• Cancerous prostate removal
• Cancerous prostate radiation, which can be performed through radioactive seed implants
(Brachytherapy) or through external radiation
2. • Cancerous prostate freezing, or cryotherapy
• Non-Curative Hormonal therapy, which is performed in conjunction with either cryotherapy or
radiation
• Observation
As Donald Sonn knows, patients who are facing a serious illness, such as prostate cancer, often look to
experimental or alternative treatment options, hoping to with control or eliminate the disease. One such
alternative, which currently exists outside the US, is HIFU, or High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound.
Studies have shown, however, that HIFU treatments often have significant failure rates when it comes
to treating cancer, particularly in the case of initial and recurrent cases of prostate cancer. It is because
of these relatively high failure rates that some leading urology professionals have suspended use of
HIFU until further evidence is presented of the treatment’s effectiveness.
