No rest for Wyllie at Sorrento
West Australian, 17/12/08, Property, Page 60
By: Cathy Saunders
The Wyllie Group has scarcely had the sash snipped on its $30 million
second stage development of the Sorrento Quay Boardwalk than it is
planning a $12 million third stage with more shops and food outlets. It is
counting on the continuing appeal of the precinct at Hillarys Boat Harbour,
which attracts more than five million visitors each year, making it one of WA s
most popular tourist destinations.

CATHY SAUNDERS
The Wyllie Group has scarcely had the
sash snipped on its $30 million second
stage development of the Sorrento
Quay Boardwalk than it is planning a
$12 million third stage with more
shops and food outlets.
It is counting on the continuing
appeal of the precinct at Hillarys Boat
Harbour, which attracts more than
five million visitors each year, making
it one of WA's most popular tourist
destinations.
The second stage, officially opened
last Saturday by WA Police Minister
and Member for Hillarys Rob John-
son, has added 2200sqm of food and
beverage venues. They include the
relocated two-storey Breakwater tav-
ern and restaurant that was fitted out
to the tune of $7 million by the own-
ers, the Reid family, who have run it
for more than 20 years.
Wyllie general manager of property
assets Nick Hunt said the 1598sqm
Breakwater was like a Raffles of the
northern suburbs.
"And this whole new building
before was just seabed," he said.
The other outlets in stage two are
Hippo Creek, which relocated from
Scarborough, Fab Burgers, Top Catch
fish and chips, Gelatino ice-cream and
Wokinabox.
Mr Hunt said the tenants paid pre-
mium rents because of the amount of
visitor traffic but they had no trouble
securing tenants. "We are fully
leased," he said.
Hillarys Boat Harbour had main-
tained its drawing power, despite the
economic gloom.
"People always seem to flock to
marinas," Mr Hunt said. "It is that
lifestyle on the water and the shop-
ping "
The major revamp also features a
bascule or "seesaw" bridge, which is a
movable bridge with a counterweight
that balances the span throughout the
upward swing while providing clea-
rance for boats. It is believed to be the
first in WA.
In addition, there are 19 more boat
pens in the marina and a new-look
farekyL1MC11 11 7 1 1111 Ij11=11
Rottnest Island ferry terminal.
The development enables visitors
to walk a complete circuit of the
boardwalk, from the northern car-
park across the new bridge, through
the boardwalk and back to shore.
Wyllie managing director Melissa
Karlson said the development would
dramatically increase the public
amenity to Hillarys Boat Harbour and
provide quality restaurants and food
outlets to serve tourism and the local
community.
Mr Hunt said the third stage would
be the redevelopment of the space
vacated by the Broadwater tavern
after it relocated. There would be
malls with more shops, plus food and
beverage offerings.
"It will probably be half the size of
what we have currently done," he
said. "It is a big development, with at
least 10 to 12 more tenancies, with alf-
resco looking out over the harbour."
Other retail could include a sun-
glasses shop and CD shop, he said.
