My media product uses language, clothing, and models to represent urban teenagers from a particular social group. The language uses street names and informal terms that urban teens would use. The clothing shown is stylish but affordable brands, relatable to teens who can't afford designer labels. The models shown are black or mixed race, reflecting the stereotype that these groups mostly listen to rap, hip hop, and R&B music. However, one female model wears modest clothing, breaking the stereotype that women in hip hop must dress provocatively. The models are depicted as average teenagers who are in college, aged 16-17, to be relatable to other teens.
2. - Language
My media product uses language to represent particular social
groups. For example, not many teens in other social groups use
street names for their urban ‘alter ego’ such as “Murder Man
S”. My media product uses this to show that some teenagers
use street names instead of their real names on the streets.
Also, the language used in my text isn’t too formal. This is to
represent that teenagers in this social group do not speak
formally in this urban era. The title itself (turn up) is an urban
phrase used to urban teenagers when they are having fun.
3. - Clothing
In addition, the clothing used for my media product is used to
represent a social group of my audience. I have used urban
stylish clothes, however they are not designer labelled. The
audience can relate to this as not every teenager can afford to
buy designer clothes as they do not all have jobs. Clothes have
a big influence on teenagers as they like to express themselves
through their clothes. Due to this, my media product aims to
slightly mirror average urban teens so the teens from the
particular social group feel as though they are similar to my
models.
4. - Models
Also, the models represent average urban teenagers through
the colour of their skin. Mainly, black or mixed race teens are
stereotyped to listen to rap, hip hop and r’n’b (mostly males)
so my media product shows this by using three male models
and one female model. This also shows that usually more teen
males listen to this genre of music than females. However I
have broken the stereotype of all women wear short tight
clothes in the hip hop industry. I have done this by making my
model wear a thick jumper in the contents and then a normal t-
shirt for the double page spread. This is because some females
in the social group feel that women don’t need to be half
naked to be a good artist. I tried to display this in my media
product to represent these females in this particular social
group.
5. In addition, the models used for my media product are used to
represent a particular social group as the models are teenagers
that attend college like average teenagers. The magazine aims
more to males then females with a 3:1 ratio, however females
still play an important role in the representation of my media
product. The models are aged 16-17 years old and study the
same subjects as other teenagers. Not only can some teenagers
relate to these models, but some of the younger teenagers can
look up to these models as inspiration or idols.
