Salivary glands are exocrine glands that secrete a colorless, slightly sticky fluid called saliva into the oral cavity through ducts that open onto the surface of the oral mucosa. Saliva is a critical component of oral and dental health. Disruption in salivary flow due to disease, drugs, or radiation therapy not only can have dire effects on the teeth and oral mucosa, but it also can reduce patients’ overall quality of life by reducing their ability to eat and speak.
