12. RISKS identified for Urban Africa
1.Natural Hazards including weather hazards due to Climate
change
2.Epidemics or Infectious & parasitic diseases : Diarrhoea ,
Cholera and Malaria
3.Shack Fire and Road Accidents
4. Armed Conflict and prevalent
One critical point is that everyday hazard and small disasters fail to
qualify the disaster criteria of UNISDR now UNDRR(United nation
Office for Disaster Risk Reduction).
Due to which Urban Flooding ,Many Diseases and Large shack fires
are not Reported.
13. Analysis of Risk
At least half of the population of cities in
Africa live in informal settlements.
Many of which are situated in hazard
prone areas
Informal settlements lack basic
infrastructure and services.
This leads to unsafe & insufficient water ,
poor sanitation ,drainage and smoke filled
houses due to dirty fuel.
14. If there is no electricity stoves , candles are used
increasing risk of fires which can spread due to
dense population and poor roads may compound
the problem.
Due to poor sanitation & Drainage 6 million
people are killed in Africa every year.
Rapid urbanisation without land use zoning lead
to settlements to the hazard prone areas. The
buildings build without complying the coding
norms made them vulnerable to hazards
Armed Conflicts are a major concern and major
hindrance in development
Corruption in implementation of projects leads to
Analysis of Risk

19. Composite vulnerability in Africa: Climate-related hazard exposure, population
density, household and community resilience, and governance and violence.
20. Way Farward…
1. Proper land zoning , building codes & Drainage systems
prior to the new settlements.
2. Infrastructure development: Road ,Electricity ,Drinking
water projects with the help of AID.
3. Healthcare, Vaccination drives and Sanitation to be given
highest priority.
4. Empowerment of people, local government with trainings
and motivating them to use the traditional and effective
techniques to counter risks.
21. Way Farward…
The un-accounted disasters must be considered by UN as
a special case in Africa.
Industrialization and Agricultural practices to be enhanced
through UN bodies,World Bank and developed countries
which may facilitate employment and reduce the poverty of
people which is the core of the problems.
Armed conflicts to be handled with mediation &
intervention from UN without affecting the social fabric of
locals
Monitoring and regular audits of funds by independent
agencies to check corruption.
