3. Basic Types of Ships
Ships are made based on their purposes which had many sizes.
Here are several types of ships based on their uses and purposes.
• Container Ships
• Tanker Ships
• Cargo Ships
• Bulk Carrier
• Ro-Ro Ships
• Passenger Ships
• Fishing Vessels
• Offshore Vessels
• Submarine
• Aircraft Carrier
4. Container Ships
• Container ships are the ships designed to
transport goods in containers
• It is a large, long ship that is specifically
designed for carrying cargo in the container.
• It holds things such as clothing, textiles, food
products, and electronics.
• The sizes vary, but it typically has the same
essential features, including a bridge, cranes,
cargo holds, and container security systems
• It is used to transport big, standard-sized
freight containers.
• It holds huge quantities of cargo compacted in
different types of containers.
5. Tanker Ship
• Tanker ships are the ships designed to
transport large amounts of stored liquids or
gases.
• It can be categorized into gas carrier, chemical
tanker, and oil tanker.
• Safety is the top priority because it transports
hazardous and flammable materials.
• A chemical tanker is built to transport
chemicals and different liquid products in
bulk.
• A gas tanker is used to transport
LPG, LNG or liquefied chemical
gases in bulk.
6. Cargo Ship
• The ship which is very popular and familiar.
• It is designed depending on the types of
cargo they carry.
• It is well-built of highly strong materials to
support the cargo load.
• It is huge to accommodate the shipment.
• It can be single-deck or multi-deck.
• A cargo ship is used to carry various
commodities such as general cargo, forest
products, dry bulk, grain, and steel coils
7. Bulk Carrier
• Bulk carrier ships are the ships designed to
carry goods unpackaged in large number.
• It is a commercial ship that transports dry
commodities in large quantities.
• It is known for its maximum capacity,
safety, efficiency, and durability.
• It is available in various sizes and designs
depending on cargo types.
• It is designed to transport large quantities
of cargo (generally dry cargo).
• The cargo transported is loose
cargo, without any specific
packaging and commonly contains
food grains, ores, coals and
cement.
8. Passenger ship
• Roll-on Roll-off ships are the ships designed
to carry wheeled cargo such as cars, motor
cycles, buses, trucks, and many others
• It carries wheeled cargo.
• It has built-in or shore-based ramps that allow
cargo to be rolled on and off the ship
efficiently.
• The automobiles are secured to the ship’s deck
to prevent them from moving when at sea.
• It is used to transport wheeled cargo such as
cars, buses, semi-trailer trucks, trailers, and
railroad cars.
• They are driven on and off the ship
using their own wheels
9. Passenger Ship
• Passenger ships are the ships designed to
carry people include cruise and ferry.
• It is mainly classified into ferry and cruise ship.
• Ferry accommodates short-distance routes.
• Cruise ship is like a luxurious floating hotel
with state-of-the-art facilities.
• A passenger ship is built to transit passengers
across the sea.
• It is mainly classified into ferry and cruise ship.
• A ferry is used to transit passengers on short-
distance routes.
• A cruise ship is mainly designed for
recreational activities.
10. Fishing Vessel
• It is built to catch fish in the sea or lake. It
is usually used for commercial, artisanal,
and recreational fishing.
• It is mainly classified into dragger and
factory ships.
• A dragger ship is designed to operate
fishing trawls and a factory ship is built to
process and freeze caught fishes or whales.
11. Offshore Vessel
• Offshore Vessels are the ships designed to
supply goods to offshore oil and gas
platforms.
• It goes out to sea to replenish supplies and
carry personnel.
• It has equipment and safety features to
protect the well-being of the staff and deal
with emergencies.
• It is a complex vessel with modern
technology and equipment.
• It also assists in the transit and relief of
crewing personnel to and from the high
seas’ operational arenas.
12. Submarine
• It can operate both below and above the
water surface.
• It is capable of independent operations when
submerged under the sea for extended
periods.
• A modern submarine has an elliptical bow and
stern with an extended cylindrical body in the
middle.
• It is built to operate below and above the
water surface.
• It is primarily used for military operations.
• It is also useful for scientific
purposes because it can travel to
depths that are inaccessible to
humans.
13. Aircraft Carrier
• Aircraft carrier is a naval vessel which acts
as a place for military airplane to take off
and land.
• It is an airfield at sea with many special
features.
• To facilitate short takeoffs and landings,
airspeeds over the deck are increased by
turning the ship into the wind.
• It is designed for several purposes:
cover for naval task group,
platform to launch strikes on coastal and
inland targets,
launch point for amphibious
landings by troops,
a flexible, mobile and responsive
airbase,
base for the delivery of humanitarian
aid,
14. Problem Solving
Direction: Create a group consist of four people. Read a case
below then discuss it in the group. Present the result of your
discussion in front of the class.
Case Study
A multinational shipping company received an order to deliver goods such
as clothing, foods, bulk asphalts, oil and gas, public transportations, and
agricultural equipment to islands in eastern Indonesia.
Questions:
1. Write down the formulation of the problem of the case above! (in a question
form)
2. What hypothesis can be made based on the formulation of the problem?
3. How to solve the problems regarding the understanding of the types of
ships, their characteristics and functions?
