3. TREATMENT FOR PNEUMONIA
• Hospitalisation poses a risk to patient
(NOSOCOMIAL INFECTIONS),so mostly
treated on OP-basis
Adequate oxygenation
Appropriate fluid balance
Antibiotics

4. CRITERIA FOR
HOSPITALISATION
• Elderly(>65yrs)
• Significant co-morbidity(kidney,heart or lung diseased)
• Leukopenia(<5000wbc/ul)
• Suppurative complication(empyema, endocarditis)
• Failure of OP management/Inability to take oral
medication
• Tachypnea
(>30/min),Tachycardia(>140/min),Hypotension(<90m
mHg,sys),Hypoxemia(<60mmHg),Altered mental
status

5. OXYGENATION
• To all patients with
tachypnea,hypoxemia,hypotension or acidosis
• Aim: Maintain PaO2 at or above 8kPa
• High concentrations, preferably humidified
should be used
• CPAP(continuous positive airway pressure ) –
to who remain hypoxic despite this

6. INTRAVENOUS FLUID
• TO

– Older patients
• Ionotropic support for patient with shock

8. DURATION
• For uncomplicated- 7days
• Legionella
• Staphylococcus longer duration
• Klebsiella
• Clinical review-6 weeks later
• Anaerobic organism oral Metronidazole-
