This report summarizes my research of the specialized field of
pet design.
Our firm, Great Design, has been considering avenues in niche
markets in
order to gain a reputation as an interior design company that
will become
known for outstanding quality work in a specialized area of
design.
Interior design often focuses on homeowner’s lifestyle and their
children, but
considerations for pets are often neglected. Designing with
people’s pets in
mind not only benefits the pets, but also the families who are
6. living with
them. Although pets are part of the family, sometimes people
consider
surrendering their animals because they find it difficult to live
with their pet.
For example, people do not know where to put their cat’s litter
box, or they
trip over the dog’s food dish. These daily frustrations can be
overcome by
implementing some design tools and features. In no time, people
and their
pets will be living happily together in a more functional space.
Currently in Vancouver, no interior design company advertises
that they
specialize in designing for pets. However, if you look around
the city, it does
not take long to realize that people love their pets, and many
services
already exist for them. Doggy daycares, bakeries, even spas, are
examples
of some of the pricey services people spend on their pets. It
appears that
catering to pets and people who treat their pets as children
could be a viable
niche market. In fact, according to an online article entitled
Pampered Pets,
the pet industry is a four to five billion dollar a year market.
7. I have researched the different aspects of designing for pets,
and I
recommend that our company consider this niche market as a
new focus in
our future work. I also recommend that our firm source and
supply specialty
pet furniture items for our clients. I have found four areas that I
recommend
our firm concentrate on:
• Space planning for pets
• Materials for pets
• Furniture for pets
• Special features and built-ins for pets.
Commented [A1]: [Choose Memo or Letter Format- depends on
internal or external. This is an internal message, so memo
format is
used. If it’s to an external client, choose a letter format and
greeting.
Commented [A2]: Begin with a clear, direct opening
Commented [A3]: The part gives the purpose of the report.
Speak directly to the client. In this case the client is another
member
of the same company.
Commented [A4]: This part provides background information
8. (context)
Commented [A5]: If you use facts or statistics, make sure you
give the source. Always properly use citations. Use the APA
style
guide for details on how to properly include citations and
refereces.
Commented [A6]: Preview the sections of the report, in the
same order that they appear in the report. Use the same wording
that is used in the reports’ headings.
Commented [A7]: Preview of recommendations. The bulleted
list give the criteria, and this order will be followed in the rest
of the
report.

12. design styles.
Dog crates and litter boxes now come in contemporary design
styles so that
they can blend in with a space’s colour and design scheme.
Some pieces are
dual-purpose in that they also act as pieces as furniture. These
pieces are
ideal for apartments, condos or small rooms. Figure 1 below
shows an
example of a dog bed that also is a bedside table.

Many dog owners would be thrilled to have a dog house like the
one
shown above in Figure 1. A piece of furniture like this creates a
living
space for the dog while not upsetting the balance of decorating.
However, most furniture choices like this have to ordered off
the
internet. The lack of available pet furniture in the city is also an
opportunity to source and supply these pieces to our clients.
Special Features and Built-Ins
_____________________________________________________
15. 1. Become the only design firm in Vancouver to specialize in
designing
for pets, specifically in the areas of space planning, material,
furniture and special features for pets.
2. Source and make readily available to our clients a selection
of pet
furniture items.
Commented [A16]: A conclusion is different from the
recommendations.
This paragraph is a concise conclusion
Commented [A17]: This phrase is lead-in to the list of
recommendations. It provides context for the items in the list.
