Organizational cultures are intentionally created and carefully
maintained by companies. They shape the "feel" and visual artifacts of
the organization as well as support the organization's business strategy.
A business strategy can allow a company to leverage the organization's
set of core competencies to create a competitive advantage. Two
examples of a business strategy or core competency are superior
customer service and innovation. In addition to employing methods that
support the overall business strategy of the organization, each internal
business unit also creates its own practices that support the strategy. The
human resources (HR) management business unit, for example,
formulates the HR practices to ensure that the company's human capital
efforts support a culture of innovation.
As an example, an organization whose business strategy or core
competency is innovation might foster the overall culture of innovation
by instituting a work-when-you-want policy and creating nontraditional
workspaces. In addition, the HR business unit might design practices to
enhance the culture of innovation, such as hiring only from universities
known for encouraging innovation, implementing a bonus program for
employees who acquire a patent, or using an employee selection test to
screen for the most innovative among the group. However, if the
strategy or core competency of the organization were superior customer
service, the overall policies and business unit practices would differ
greatly. A distinctly different culture would be created, one that supports
the customer service business strategy.
For this assignment, select an organization you know well or research an
organization that interests you. Respond to the following:
· Describe the business strategy of the organization (be sure to
include sufficient detail to provide the reader with a clear understanding
of the strategy).
· Analyze three unique, noteworthy aspects of the organization's
culture and explain how they support the overall organizational business
strategy or core competencies:
· If the culture does not currently support the strategy, offer
suggestions for changes.
· Identify and analyze three distinct HR practices that support the
organization's business strategy or core competencies:
· If the HR practices do not currently support the strategy, offer
suggestions for changes.
Support your statements with scholarly references. Be sure to include a
separate title page as well as a reference page.
Your final product should be a 3- to 4-page Microsoft Word document,
using a minimum of 3 sources from professional literature. Professional
literature may include the Argosy University online library resources,
relevant textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and websites created
by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, and
.gov). Be sure you write in a clear, concise, and organized manner;
demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution
of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

You are employed in a large consulting firm. A new client has engaged
your firm. It is a well-established, nationwide company that for years
dominated the market share in its niche industry. The company has a
traditional, hierarchical, and function-based organizational structure with
many levels of management and uses centralized decision making. The
organization prefers to use a small number of account managers based in
the headquarters as the point of contact for all customer inquiries and
problem resolution. The culture is conservative, stable, and risk averse.
Teamwork is considered wasteful.
The company is noticing a disturbing trend of customers switching to its
competitors. These competitors are small, agile firms that emphasize
rapid adoption of new technologies and fast, empowered, team-based
customer service. These companies are local to their customers, while
your client has a central headquarter office with four regional offices
that only provide limited services.
Based on its own internal study, the client company wishes to undertake
organizational structure change and organizational culture change. They
seek advice on what specific changes are needed.
You have been assigned to the team working on this project with one of
your firm's senior consultants. The team has asked you to draft a
presentation for internal review. Ultimately, the presentation will be
delivered to the client by the project manager.
Your task is to create a presentation, with speaker notes, including the
following:
· Analyze and describe the reasons why the current organizational
structure makes your client vulnerable to its new competitors.
· Propose a new organizational structure. Explain how the new
structure will address the problem of client retention.
· Evaluate and inform the client of the changes needed in its
organizational culture to support the new organizational structure.
· Explain how teamwork might be used to support the new
organizational structure and culture. Be sure to indicate which "types" of
teams will be used.
· Using the Big Five personality traits, create a profile (list most
important traits) for hiring customer service personnel who would be the
best match with the new organizational structure and culture.
Recommendations must be supported by applicable scholarly sources.

Over the decades, numerous theories of motivation have been
developed. Most of the older theories have been shown to not be
particularly valid and, therefore, not good predictors of motivational
force. More contemporary theories can explain the motivational force in
particular situations well. Therefore, industrial/organizational (I/O)
psychologists must understand which theory best predicts/clarifies
human motivation based on the particulars of the situation.
For this assignment, the following contemporary theories are considered:
· Self-Determination Theory/Cognitive Evaluation Theory
· Goal-Setting Theory
· Self-Efficacy Theory
· Reinforcement Theory
· Equity Theory/Organizational Justice Theory
· Expectancy Theory
Using the Argosy University online library resources, the readings for
this module, and the Internet, review these contemporary theories of
motivation. Then, correctly apply the appropriate theory to the following
two scenarios:
· A professional working for a major corporation is assigned goals
each quarter. If all goals are achieved, a substantial bonus is paid. One
quarter, workers review their new goals and make the determination that
they are not likely to achieve all the goals.
· A person works in a department with eight coworkers, and they all
do the same job. They believe that one worker (who they know well) is
receiving more perks and rewards than they are for the same amount and
quality of work.
For each scenario:
· State the selected theory of motivation that best applies to that
scenario.
· Summarize the theory chosen.
· Explain how the theory selected explains/predicts motivational
force.
Your final product should be a 3- to 4-page Microsoft Word document
