The number of marriages has
drastically decreased since 2005-

of a big economic crisis in Spain.

EL MATRIMONIO (Marriage)
Civil vs. Religious marriage evolution
Año
Year
CONCLUSIONES:
In 1980, 96% of marriages
were religious. Today civil
marriages outnumber religious
marriages.
IMPLICACIONES:
The last 2 charts imply that there has been a big change in Spain since the 1980s.
Our 1978 CONSTITUTION is the reason. Before it, under the 40-year-long
dictatorship in Spain, non-religious marriages were not allowed. Also, getting
married older than 25 was not well seen by the population, especially for women.
4. LA FAMILIA EN ESPAÑA
EL MATRIMONIO (Marriage)
CONCLUSIONES:
There was an important peak
in same-sex marriage in 2006
upon the approval of the new
law. It remains stable after.
In July 2005 Spain became the third world country after
Holland and Belgium to legalize same-sex marriage.
In between 2005-2012 approximately 26,000 same-
sex couples got married, 1.7% of total marriages.

6. LA FAMILIA EN ESPAÑA
HIJOS (Birth)
Evolution of mum’s age on first birth
CONCLUSIONES:
Spain is naturally a
“procrastinating country”,
and having kids is no
exception!
In between 1980-2012 the age for first birth has moved from 25 years old to 30.3 for
women, and from 30.1 to 33.5 for men. Spain along with Italy, Germany and the
United Kingdom is one of the countries were women become mums at a later age.
7. LA FAMILIA EN ESPAÑA
EMANCIPACIÓN (Leaving home)
CONCLUSIONES:
The more developed the
country is, the younger the
kids leave their homes. Spanish
youngsters struggle
economically if they leave their
homes. There is also a cultural
aspect to this: family links!

8. LA FAMILIA EN ESPAÑA

habits, exercise, good climate… We
are happy, optimistic people. Many
foreigners come to Spain on
