Fazıl Say is a popular composer and concert pianist. He
was born in Ankara in 1970. His father is a writer and his
mother is a pharmacist. Although they had no interest in
music, they both noticed that their son had a great
interest and ability to make music. Therefore, they
approved of his education in music.

He began studying the piano at five. At the age of seven
he composed his first piece of music for the piano. He
enrolled at the Ankara State Conservatory at eleven. Six
years later he won a scholarship and left for the Robert
Schuman Institute in Düsseldorf, Germany. He took a
four-month language course in Germany. After he had
studied for five years with David Levine, he moved to
Berlin to teach at the Berlin Academy for three years. He
won the Young Concert Artists International Audition in
1995. He was the best of 500 musicians.

His aim is to write the libretto and music of a complete
ballet and give it to a choreographer. He prefers live
recording to recording in a studio because he enjoys
audience reaction and the excitement of it.
