Romanticism In How Clear She Shines
In this excerpt from Emily Bronte's poem "How Clear She Shines" the elements of Gothicism are
displayed clearly. The overall cynical mood sets the scene for a gothic style of writing; the contrasts
between truth and treachery, joy and pain, peace and grief, bring out a feeling of unease that is
Gothicism. Besides this poem, Emily Bronte wrote an entire gothic novel called Wuthering Heights.
This novel portrays two lovers with a very unhealthy relationship in where they are very passionate
but take things to the extreme. The lengths they go to for their love start off as romanticism but
quickly grow grotesque and morph into Gothicism. Gothicism is a style of writing that is
characterized by fear, horror, and death but can also include Romantic qualities like nature,
individualism, and emotion. Romanticism is known for its emphasis on emotion and imagination;
Gothicism obtains these qualities as well but in a darker twisted way. In Gothicism elements of
Romanticism are taken too far to the absolute extreme, resulting in grotesque outcomes instead of
the predictable plot generated by most romantic novels. Emily Bronte uses the Gothic themes of
doppelgänger, sublimity, and revenge to stress the surreal and outrageous actions and thought of the
main characters, Catherine and Heathcliff, in Wuthering Heights.
Doppelgänger is a gothic element used in Wuthering Heights to create confusion and discomfort.
This element helps to show the odd similarities between Catherine and

Essay on Doppelganger and King Kong English Speech
Introduction:
"Good morning/afternoon class and *teacher*, today I will be speaking about how Michael Parker,
the author of Doppelganger and Peter Jackson, the director of the film King Kong, accurately
portray the main concept of the Beast Within through the symbolism of masks and the notions of
betrayal and duplicity. I will be talking about Josh and Andrew from Doppelganger, Carl Denham
and the people that he manipulated and affected through his deception, from King Kong and explain
their contributions to the main idea of the Beast Within, how they wear a mask and how they portray
the concepts of Duplicity and Betrayal."
Body Paragraph 1: (Doppelganger)

The fact that Josh gave Andrew the QZ45 meant that there is now a whole new series of events that
affect the storyline; Andrew ends up killing 'boy' because the QZ45 has a mental and physical effect,
where the taker feels 'ready to fight or kill'. In this case, boy makes Andrew angry, by slashing him
with a knife during the chase in the tunnels, and Andrew goes on a crazy rampage and kills boy.
Andrew soon becomes very guilty that he killed boy because he realises that in the normal Sydney
'boy' is a kid named Derek, who dies in a car crash, which makes Andrew logically believe that if
one person is killed in the Dystopic Sydney, this same happening will reflect in a slightly different
manner, in the normal Sydney. Josh also demonstrates the concept of the Beast Within through the
plain evil of what he did to Andrew, the evil intentions of Josh were the reason why he did it, it
wasn't to save anyone's life, like Andrew ends up doing later on in the text, but it was all part of
Josh's scheme to become the owner of the metsin factory so that he could become the richest and
most famous person in the Dystopic Sydney, he was willing to kill many people to get his desire and
he managed to get a whole gang of 'hallboys' to listen to him and do it.

The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde
Frankenstein by author Mary Shelley is a Gothic science fiction novel written in Switzerland
between 1816–1817, and published January 1, 1818. Set in eighteenth century Geneva, Frankenstein
tells the story of a young man by the name of Victor who goes away to college to study natural
philosophy, chemistry, and alchemy. When armed with the knowledge he has long been seeking,
Victor spends months constructing a creature out of old body parts, and in the secrecy of his
apartment, brings his creation to life. The monstrous abomination later disappears, and when a
mysterious series of deaths start to occur in Victor's family, he is certain his creation is the cause,
and devotes his life to vanquishing the savage fiend. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published in 1886, is a mystery thriller about a respectable
man by the name of Henry Jekyll, who takes a potion to occasionally become a dark and evil
character, which he so cleverly calls "Mr. Hyde". Meanwhile Mr. Utterson, Dr. Jekyll's lawyer and
close friend, tries to figure out why his dear friend Dr. Jekyll is acting so suspiciously, while
simultaneously trying to uncover the origin of Mr. Hyde for himself. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde shares common themes with Mary Shelly's Frankenstein such as dangerous
knowledge, monstrosity, and the use of doppelgängers. Both Frankenstein and Jekyll and Hyde,
develop the idea of the doppelgänger to emphasize how social

The Role of the Narrator in Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Black Cat'
The narrator in "The Black Cat"
Edgar Allan Poe is well–known for his captivating tales of the macabre through eloquence and wit.
In many of his short stories, Poe was able to exploit his audience's fears through allegory and
descriptive details of murder and madness. One of Poe's captivating, yet mad, narrators helms "The
Black Cat," a tale of paranoia, alcoholism, and murder. There are several things that make the
narrator an intriguing character including his psychological state, the imp of the perverse, and the
effect that alcoholism has on him. Like in many of his tales, the narrator murders both his beloved
Pluto and his wife, on two separate occasions, yet denies that he has been stricken by madness and is
instead intent on setting the record straight. While the narrator blames his actions on his alcoholism,
it can be argued that his actions were not only influenced by alcohol, but also by his psyche. For
example, he believes that his beloved Pluto's doppelgänger is out to get him. Not only is the
doppelgänger a constant reminder of how badly the narrator treated his cat, but it also serves as a
constant reminder of how he killed it; the doppelgänger is missing an eye, just like Pluto, and also
has a mark that resembles a noose, which is how the narrator killed his cat. It is the doppelgänger's
physical appearance that drives the narrator to believe that it is his duty to destroy it before it
destroys him. While the narrator never intended on lashing out

Doppelgänger In Frankenstein
Shelley begins by comparing Frankenstein's actions and thoughts with those of the Creature,
demonstrating that within that of one there exists a spectre of the other. Given that doppelgänger are
any set of entities which reflect aspects of each other, it is clear that Shelley intends the two to be as
such. Frankenstein initially describes his curiosity with the natural world as "among the earliest
sensations [remembered by him]" due to the world being to him "a secret, which [he] desired to
divine", including the "hidden laws of nature" (Chapter 2). The use of the word 'divine' carries
tremendous connotation, as it implies the presence of supernatural intervention; from a young age,
Frankenstein has imagined himself as having God–like powers and able to glimpse the machinations
of the "hidden laws of nature", all due to his curiosity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Frankenstein's belief is echoed and confirmed to quite an extent by the actions of the creature, which
begins life as tabula rasa (consistent with the classical epistemological 'blank slate' theory
popularised immediately before Shelley's period), but over time acquires both the ability to converse
with exceptional eloquence and to subsist on meagre means as a societal leper; this demonstrates
one aspect of the Doppelbeziehung (the relationship between doppelgänger) where Frankenstein's
purely conjectural beliefs are taken by his Creature and found to be applicable. Shelley then
describes this Doppelbeziehung more explicitly: the creature bemoans the self–inflicted degradation
of his virtue after he murders his creator, stating that his [malignity] is even more tragic than that of
the biblical Devil, who even "had friends and associates in his desolation... [while the Creature
stands] alone" (chapter

Similarities Between Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde
Both virtue and vice is within every man, and it is the balance of these two forces that make one
human. The decision to house these traits in separate entities, or to detach them from oneself
completely is dehumanizing. Both the protagonists of Dorian Gray and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
undergo this process when they make the decision to create separate apparitions, or doppelgangers,
in order to better fit to the mold of society. As each text progresses both Dorian and Jekyll face a
series of changes in both themselves and their counterparts, resulting their loss of control. The
precedents of society motivate the creation of living counterparts for both Dr. Jekyll and Dorian
Gray. Both protagonists attempt to sever themselves in order to endure ... Show more content on

He uses his doppelganger, Edward Hyde, as a way to justify his need to perform evil acts in a whole
separate being. If both good and evil "could be housed in separate identities," Jekyll could live both
a noble and vulgar life (Stevenson 65). This decision reveals a great deal about Jekyll's identity, in it
that he lacks decency and rational. Dr. Jekyll discovers a desirable sensation when he becomes Mr.
Hyde, and a sense of relief. Hyde resembles a much younger man in comparison to Jekyll, due to his
years of suppression. After his first transformation Jekyll feels "younger, lighter, [and] happier" in
the form of Mr. Hyde (Stevenson 67). Jekyll finds pleasure in becoming Hyde, suggesting that the
progression of his doppelganger was under his control, until his need to become Hyde consumed
him. Comparatively, Dorian Gray develops his apparition unintentionally, and is unaware of the
consequences that will follow. As he realizes that his innocence and beauty is not perpetual, he
compares himself to a portrait that "will remain always young," and wishes "it were only the other
way," (Wilde 27). His act vitalizes the creation of his doppelganger, the portrait, which will then
begin to age with every sin that he commits. Dorian's reaction to the change in the portrait greatly
counters those

What Does The Uncanny Mean
The theme of the 'double' has been explored as a concept frequently over hundreds of years; the
most emblematic being in 'The Uncanny' by Sigmund Freud. Freud opens his essay by giving a
definition of what "uncanny" is, that it "belongs to the realm of the frightening, of what evokes fear
and dread"[]. The words 'heimlich' and 'unheimlich' are used within Freud's essay, as he refers the
two they integrate to create the meaning behind what the "uncanny" actually is. He explains the
hindrance between one another as 'unheimlich' means something which is hidden or concealed, and
'heimlich' defines the familiar. This paradoxical barrier is what then merges them both to form the
"uncanny", when something familiar is integrated which is then perceived as something which is
unfamiliar. The utilisation of the 'double' is described by Freud in his essay 'The Uncanny' written in

Doppelgänger In Gothic Novels
The metaphor of the doppelgänger in Gothic Novels may refer to 19th century social fears of
insecurities, especially regarding the rules of the classes for decency and politeness and the
innovation of science. When focusing on Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Stevenson as
well as The Picture of Dorian Gray by Wilde, the evolution of the literary double may be explained
by the social situation of Victorian England (cf. Duren 2). Men were not only born into being a
gentleman, but they had to adhere to certain moral restrictions. These guidelines meant to repress
instincts and emotions in favour of a norm accepted by society. Victorians divided strictly into right
and wrong and everything differing from the norm was considered improper. The fulfilment of
desires was considered as a weakness and hence, needed to be repressed. Maintaining a man's
reputable image before his fellowmen was of great importance, though at the same time, one had to
deal with contrary feelings, generally considered as improper or even immoral. Hence, men were in
need to repress these emotions for the appreciation of their fellow gentlemen. One had to follow the
moral guidelines of the times, especially when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stories and novels are not set in distant places or foreign countries (except Frankenstein). From the
19th century onwards, the novels are often situated in England of that time. Thus, it is suggested that
readers should reflect on the stories, placing them in the context of their own country, while also
relating to their own mindset. These new ideas are both shown in Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange
Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, both of which were
written at the end of the century, often referred to as Gothic Revival. However, one of the very first
examples of duality is presented in Mary Shelley's

Doppelganger Effect In The Tell Tale Heart
The Tell Tale Heart is simply an invigorating tale of a criminal who tried to prove his sanity by
writing about his own account of how he killed a man. Poe describes the actions seen through the
eyes of a senile narrator. The narrator focuses on the old man's eye and determines to commit a
conscious act of murder. He insists on seating the policemen in the very room where he had
assassinated the old man just a few hours before, the old man's body was disclosed beneath the
floorboards at the narrator's own admission and admits his crime because of the loud beating of the
heart. Throughout the entire story, the readers can expect detailed descriptions of how the murder
was accomplished and what thoughts – sane or insane – went on inside the murderer's mind. He
prides himself on his strategic planning and mastery at deceiving others. In this story, an effect
which may evidently be observed is the doppelganger effect, as depicted in the old man's
identification with the murderer who is also the narrator of the story (Chua 350). In various scenes
of the story, the narrator revealed that he understands and empathizes with what the old man feels.
The narrator feels bad whenever the old man looks like he is having trouble, and he also feels
terrified every time the old man looks frightened. Therefore, this shows that the narrator actually had
no hostile reason to kill the man since he actually feels for him and/or loves him. However, what
made the narrator murder the old man is

Doppelganger or (the double) is defined or designated as the ghost of a living person. However, it
has become a popular device in since the early nineteenth century in the works of some German
writers such as E.T.A. Hoffmann and Heinrich Von Kleist In literature, it has gradually taken a

Analytical Essay– The Skeleton Council by Katherine Leyton
The Skelton Council by Katherine Leyton was published in Volume 36 No. 4 of Contemporary
Verse 2 during the spring of 2014. The poem opens on a house inhabited by a woman and a group of
skeletons that meet every evening for examination. One night, the woman blinks and sees a
doppelganger of herself in an empty room. The Skeleton Council by Katherine Leyton uses
symbolism, imagery, and style to express the oppressive nature of family secrets and their distortive
and obsessive effects on the narrator.

The first half of the poem is comprised of a more complex syntax than the second half. The
sentences in the first half are longer, averaging 3 lines each and use a more descriptive diction with
words such as "anxious"(line 3), "encouraging"(line 5), and "sideboards"(line 2). This heavier style
brings forward an oppressive element as the meaning is trapped behind dense language. In the
second half, the style becomes more simplistic with sentences averaging 1–2 lines and word choice
becoming more concise. This change in style clearly presents the meaning in the second half taking
away the oppressive atmosphere and reinforcing the distortion of the narrators' feelings.
In The Skeleton Council by Katherine Leyton, the symbolism of skeletons as well as the
juxtaposition that imagery and style form with the narrator's feelings are utilized throughout the
poem. These elements help to express the oppressive nature of un–earthed secrets in the narrator's
life and the distortive and obsessive effects they have on

Psychological Doubling Frankenstein
Frankenstein–The Doppelganger and It's Effect
"Especially in the literature of Romanticism, the double figure or doppelganger emerges as a central
object of fascination for the imagining self, by turns compulsion and recompense, endowment and
disaster." (Gross, Vo.22 pg. 20) A majority of the literature population uses the literary device the
doppelganger. A doppelganger uses a psychological perspective of a character by taking that
character's hidden wants and desires and making them a completely separate character in the novel.
This character then is paired with vaguely similar traits, thus making the two appear as twins but one

The conscience can punish the ego by feelings of guilt. The ideal self is an imaginary picture of how
we think we ought to be, falling short of the ideal self results in the feeling of guilt. The ideal self is
determined through parents expectations ultimately. In the novel, Victor's father disapproves of his
choice to pursue a career in science. With his father never approving of him Victor's ideal self will
never be achieved, thus creating a guilty hole in Victor's emotional psyche. This ultimately can
cause a person to bury their hidden desires as Victor seemed to. But of course we cannot forget part
of ourselves. Victor's unconscious mind developed through his own creation, the monster
(Frankenstein). A person's ideal self is not the negative desires it is what you wish to achieve,
making Frankenstein a role model to Victor rather than a haunting memory. In the novel we
immediately believe that Frankenstein, the monster, is the evil twin because of his twisted and
gruesome appearance accompanied with his crazed killing spree, and then added with his
harassment on Victor Frankenstein his creator. However, Freud believes that the evil twin is marked
by a plague, which most often appears as a disease or sickness. In the novel Victor suffers from a

The Doppelgänger Effect Ender’s Game Essay
The Doppelgänger Effect Ender's Game
Orson Scott Card is a science–fiction/fantasy writer only in the sense that the setting that he uses fits
the definition of the genre. His writings deal with many relevant social issues that most people have
not noticed and/or refuse to acknowledge. His book, Ender's Game, is a subtle study of many of
these issues. This story of a boy genius shows, in slightly less than subtle terms, the horrible cruelty
of children, and the immense amount of pressure that adults force upon children, whether intentional
or not. You can also see the doppelgänger effect in Ender's sibling relationships.

Many adults will not accept that children can be as cruel as they really are. No, to most adults,
children are the innocents; those who have not been exposed to true harshness and meanness and
therefore can know nothing about it. These adults, in my point of view, are more naïve than they
believe the children to be. This makes the adults just as cruel as the children. Their refusal to admit
that their angels are really little demons makes them just as cruel for not trying to stop it from

The cruelty of the children is almost an obvious theme. What I began to notice as I read it over and

Doppelgänger In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
"Doppelgänger" is a German phrase from the mid–nineteenth century meaning mirror image, which
correlates to the conception that two individuals are a living double. Thousands of years ago,
individuals considered an ancient widespread belief of spiritual doubles to be a sign of impending
death. This was primarily due to the lack of scientific knowledge and study, which lead society to
gain faith in paranormal activities. Those cases of doppelgänger are referred to as, "evil twin"
(Ancient Origin 5) which means that the identical other may seem as a favorable shadow, but in
reality, is a malevolent and hostile being. Furthermore, these cases are considered works of fiction,

He is left alone and is infuriated because of the abandonment he endures from his creator, the very
minute he is born. Frankenstein chooses to shun him because he is immensely disgusted by its
physical appearance. For example, this is shown by the resentment the creature shows when he
states, "...Yet you, my creator, detest and spurn me..." (Shelley 111) In addition, the disfigured beast
also portrays the obsessive behavior of ambition, which makes him mentally identical to his maker,
against whom he seeks revenge. However, his objective is mainly focused on finding his master and
making him suffer for the unethical acts that he has committed. Eventually he meets his creator and
demands him to create a female mate, someone who he can relate to and share the similar grotesque
persona with. Temporarily he receives assurance upon his request, but later Frankenstein reneges on
his vow. This causes the creature to threaten his creator and swear that he will exact revenge upon
him and his family. Given the fact that William has already been murdered and Justine was framed
for it, Frankenstein cannot ignore the powerful threat. The wretch is an incredible mastermind when
it comes to committing murder because he flees multiple times and successfully manages to avoid
leaving any evidence behind. His passion to destroy his creator blinds him while he takes the lives
of the innocent. This is proven when step–by–step, he takes away all the members with whom his
maker shares a close bond. Soon, the creature murders Henry Clerval, Frankenstein's dearest
childhood friend and promises him, "I will be with you on your wedding night." (Shelley 206) These
concepts support how the scientist provokes his creation to hatred and his family to sadness with his
negligence, due to his selfish, misguided ambition to prioritize his research before his loved

Theme Of Darkness In A Tell Tale Heart
The restricted societal norms of the Victorian Era forced non–conforming ideas and behaviors into
the shadows, much like the fictitious vampires or psychopaths. A wide swath of vampire lore
reflects this repression. Vampires cannot exist in the light of day, and thus are forced to go out only
under the cover of darkness. If light represents "enlightenment", a popular literary movement in the
Victorian era, then darkness must symbolize what was deemed unfit for civilized society. In "A Tell–
Tale Heart", Poe's nameless narrator only obsesses over the old man's vulture–eye at night. What
does this have to do with repression? It can be interpreted that the narrator knows his intention to
kill the old man is evil, and so he represses his desire under the cover of night. The act of repression
is solely committed by one's mind, and as Freud would argue, the subconscious in particular. Freud
established the theory that the psyche is divided into the id, ego, and superego; and these three
forces battle to control the subconscious. This internal turmoil presents itself consistently in gothic
literature, and often is interpreted through mirrors and doppelgängers. In "A Tell–Tale Heart" the
narrator's fixation with the old man's glassy vulture–eye could symbolize the narrator's fixation with
a part of himself he wants to repress. Eye is a homonym of I, and there are plenty of examples in the
text which suggest that there is no old man, only the narrator who manifests this "old man"

The Importance Of Mystery And Suspense In Literature
Why does gothic horror even matter in literature? Gothic horror can create many things in a novel
more interesting or suspenseful of what will happen next. These stories use different characteristics
to create a gothic atmosphere in the story. During the Victorian era, the idea of gothic literature grew
in popularity. It is influenced by many ideas, including religious themes around this time period, and
usually reflects on the characteristics of the people living in the Victorian era. For example, many
people would like to be surrounded in a world containing plenty of mystery and suspense. Then
again, a supernatural force can show what someone might or might not want to become. On top of
that, a doppelganger in gothic literature definitely represents who the reader should avoid being. As
a result, gothic horror is important to a reader because of how it can connect to their lives in a
certain way. In the novel Dracula, author Bram Stoker focuses on multiple elements of gothic horror
which apply to the many characters in the novel and can compare to contemporary works that have
gothic elements, as well.
In any novel, mystery and suspense is a popular characteristic but contributes very well to what
makes a novel have a gothic theme. Here, mystery and suspense is built throughout the novel based
on the predicament of the characters. Initially, mystery is built very early on in the story, where the
reader is interested to know who the Count is, based on the thoughts of other characters Jonathan
Harker meets. When Harker says he is going to meet the Count, he meets a woman who told him not
to go, and Jonathan explains that she then "took a crucifix from her neck and offered it to me"
(Stoker 5). This gives a thought to the reader on why Jonathan is being given a crucifix for meeting
the Count, thus builds suspense on why it is symbolic of the story. Furthermore, early on in the
novel, Jonathan, along with the reader, are wondering why he is trapped in the castle, which makes
the reader think about what will happen to Jonathan next. This builds up to the reveal of Jonathan's
predicament, where he explains, "The castle is a veritable prison, and I am a prisoner!" (28). Not
only does this make the reader wonder of

The Character Of Ghosts In 'Another Fine Mess' By Ray...
"Another Fine Mess" is a horror short story written by Ray Bradbury. It is about two women, Bella
and Zelda, who are old and feel inadequate and insecure about themselves. It can also be implied
from the story that they are in fact seeking love. Bella overhears some men talking to each other on
the stairs of her new apartment everyday. She calls her close friend Zelda and they come to know
that these men are indeed the ghosts of Ollie and Stanley (Television actors). The story reveals that
these ghosts are actually seeking love like Bella and Zelda. Bella and Zelda help these ghosts realize
that they are still being loved and are not forgotten. The topic of this essay is "How doppelgangers
are employed to reveal the protagonist's character?". The ghosts in this story felt that they are not
loved anymore and Bella and Zelda also felt the same thing and also, Bella and Zelda were totally
aware of how the ghosts felt, meaning that in one way or the other the ghost were doppelgangers of
the protagonists of the story. That is how Ray Bradbury is using ghosts as doppelgangers to reveal
the protagonist's character. Bella had just moved in her new apartment a few days ago. The author
uses "old house on an old street with an old staircase" (393) to describe the apartment. This is
actually a metaphor for Bella's old age. He also used "it was all new to her" (393) implying that this
old age was new to Bella and she was not used to not being appreciated. She

Duality In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown
Similar to Young Goodman Brown, William Wilson is also an example of how and why people will
go to extremes to avoid duality. For Poe, the doppelganger is also the embodiment of the narrator
William Wilson's guilt and self–hatred, which is why he constantly wants to escape himself. The
narrator claims that he became evil suddenly, yet there is a gradual shift in emotions observed in his
deteriorating relationship with the doppelganger. The narrator begins his relationship with his
doppelganger as a friendly schoolboy rivalry before he realized that the other Wilson was indeed an
alter ego to himself. When the doppelganger was presumed to be another person, and not another
part of the narrator, his flaws did not matter to the narrator. However, ... Show more content on

Despite their rivalry and his budding fears, "in spite of the continual anxiety occasioned me by the
rivalry of Wilson, and his intolerable spirit of contradiction, I could not bring myself to hate him
altogether" (671). The narrator has some kind of affection for William for the narrator's fear is not in
himself but fear of losing to another. Poe's displays this growth of guilt by the narrator and
repression of his doppelganger, his dual self, through distinct details of symbolism. Before the
narrator is consumed by the need to repress his duality, "bright rays" (674) from a lamp enable him
to "vividly" (674) see his doppelganger. Nevertheless, his absolute fear of William Wilson sets in
when he discovers the extent of their similarities. After the discovery of William Wilson being his

Frankenstein Doppelganger Research Paper
We are always told as children we are all special and we are one of a kind. However, the concept of
the Doppelganger, which is a double or apparition of a living person, is an idea that has transpired
throughout time. According to the Daily Mail, the chances of finding someone with the exact facial
measurements as oneself is less than one in one trillion (Liberator). But doppelgangers do not just
look alike. The concept of a doppelganger is a living being that either mirrors a person's physical or

The conch symbolizes democracy and Ralph's power. Soon Jack's jealously and addiction to

Who are you, anyway? Sitting there telling people what to do. You can't hunt, you can't sing."
(Golding) Jack begins to show character of an evil leader in himself; he blames Ralph for not doing
anything productive for everyone. Implying that Jack alters the other boys'' decisions between right

democratic and gives other boys respect. "Ralph realistically confronts the problem of survival and
works out a practical plan for rescue. Jack is quick to revert to savagery, dishonesty, violence."

Finny is the beneficent double, through his sacrificial death bringing about hope and spiritual

Coraline Symbolism
A dream turned into a nightmare. This happens to Coraline, the main protagonist in the novel
Coraline by Neil Gaiman. In the novel, a young girl named Coraline moves into a large house
divides into apartments. She lives with her parents who both work, leaving Coraline to feel ignored.
One day she accesses a portal to a mirror like house where her "other" parents live. At first her
"other" parents seem like a dream, offering her whatever she wants and giving her constant
attention. Coraline soon learns that the "other" world is not all that it seems and that she must escape
in order to save herself and her parents. Unlike most children books, Coraline is a creepy
postmodern fairy tale that uses elements of the uncanny to evoke fear in the reader. Freud's concept
of the uncanny is helpful in explaining the text's appeal, and it's creepy uneasiness. Coraline focuses
on people's fears about existence and identity as individual beings. Coraline must battle against her
other mother to be independent from her and thus develop her own identity and desires. While the
novel appears to be a mild horror story, Henry Selicks' stop action photography adaptation of the
novel has a different tone and uses concepts of the uncanny is more subtle ways. By using added
characters, deleted scenes, and less grotesque imagery Henry Selick is able a children's adventure
story while Neil Gaiman's novel focused on concepts of the uncanny and the fear of losing one's
identity. The film begins with an evocative opening scene in which a pair of skeletal, robotic hands
stich a doll identical to Coraline and then sends it floating out of a window. For most viewers the
doll is viewed as a spy for the other mother. It is a portal between the two worlds that allows the
other mother to cross between both. It is used to heighten the picture's anti realistic, otherworldly
mood (time). The scene was not in the novel and was instead added to make references to the
uncanny that is used more in the novel. The doll being made is uncanny. The stitching of the doll is
unsettling because it is non–human hands acting in a human way. The doll acts as a doppelganger,
an inanimate thing that appears to move but yet is controlled by the other mother,

Doppelganger Dilemma: Conflict between good and evil in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde In Robert Louis
Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Stevenson explores the theme of doppelganger. A survey of
doppelganger examples leads one to conclude that this literary device serves a variety of purposes in
literature. It may be used to show the "other self" of a character, which he or she has not discovered
yet. This "other self" could be the darker side of the character that troubles, or the brighter side that
motivates. Hence, the use of doppelganger helps writers to portray complex characters. In the novel,

Doppelgängers: What Is A Doppelganger?
"Doppelganger" is German for "double walker" –– a shadow self that is thought to accompany every
person (Wagner. 1). There are a few terms that can relate to doppelgangers like 'bi–location'. Bi–
location is a term that refers to a person that can either spontaneously or willingly project his or her
double, known as a "wrath," to remote location (Wagner 1). In instances, a doppelganger is believed
to act as a mimicker to the authentic person. In many other folk stories around the world, like in the
mythological story of Apollo and Artemis, there are countless of stories about twins from different
genders that are siblings or related. Apollo was adopted as the sun god and Artemis was adopted as

It is clear to see that the couple has a double. One of the couples has a glowing outline. This
indicates that this couple is the doppelgänger while the other is the original pair. This doppelgänger
pair brings a sense of intimidation, danger and frightfulness. The doppelgängers look like they are
trying to frighten as well as intimidate the original pair. By the looks of it, the original couple is very
frightened and their actions look like they are almost too startled that they do not know what to do.
The original male is actually very shocked to see his doppelgänger. Meanwhile, the original woman
looks like she is extremely frightened as well as shocked and it appears that she is about to faint. She
is trying to regain her health by leaning back on the tree. She's holding her hands out most likely in
disbelief and a need for support. It almost catches a sense of satire. The male doppelgänger is staring
with intensity towards the original male in order to intimidate him. The glowing outline makes it
easy to differentiate the couple. What is pretty interesting about this piece is that Rossetti painted

expressing his love to her at the moment. The glowing outline makes it easy to differentiate the

The Doppelganger By Mary Shelley
The Doppelgänger, is a story contraption which allows the meeting or splitting of one, the harsh
experience of the mindful and natural, or an unpalatable, unsetting physical increasing – is a
fundamental part of various Gothic stories, and verifiably one the most important strings of Mary
Shelley 's Frankenstein.. While Aija Ozolins fights, 'this subject of a second self constitutes the

and take a look at the possibilities that Shelley builds up the Monster as Frankenstein 's particular

different customs and stories, they perceive your 'twofold goer ' as a detestable twin. The word

Archetypes In Hamlet
Archetypes are a constant throughout the classic of literature, an invaluable tool for the character's
thought process and how they'll react to everything. Even the infamous playwright and poet,
William Shakespeare, uses it to enhances his stories. For instance, in Shakespeare's Hamlet, the play
is known for its archetype. For instance, Laertes is often considered as the doppelganger archetype
of Hamlet. Often, he's believed to be the only one that's able to fill in the position of equal standing
with Hamlet. However, although many people would've come to the assumption that Laertes is
Hamlet's doppelganger, because of his desires for vengeance against the people who've wronged
him and how his personality contrasts Hamlet's character, Ophelia is the true foil of not only
Hamlet, but Laertes as well.
However, to understand archetypes, it's a must to start with a little review on psychoanalysis,
especially its evolution. From the beginning of archetypes, it began with Carl Jung, in the late
nineteenth to the mid–twentieth century, being considered the successor of psychoanalysis. Similar
to Sigmund Freud, Jung was fascinated by the human being's psyche and its evolution over time. He
believed a person's past, aspirations, and experiences shape their characters–– who'd they become in
the future. However, while both psychologists' studies revolved around a person's psyche and their
mental wellbeing, Jung primarily focused on the attributes that contributed to the psyche's

Elements Of Gothicism In How Clear She Shines By Emily Bronte
In this excerpt from Emily Brönte's poem "How Clear She Shines" the elements of Gothicism are
displayed clearly. The overall cynical mood sets the scene for a gothic style of writing; the contrasts
between truth and treachery, joy and pain, peace and grief, bring out a feeling of unease that is
Gothicism. Emily Bronte expounded on these themes in her novel Wuthering Heights, a classic
work of gothic fiction. This novel portrays two lovers with a very unhealthy relationship in which
they are very passionate but take their passion to the extreme. The lengths they go for their love can
initially be classified as traditional romanticism, but love turns into obsession and quickly grows
grotesque. This transformation marks the transition from Romanticism into Gothicism. Gothicism is
a style of writing that is characterized by fear, horror, and death, but can also include Romantic
qualities like nature, individualism, and emotion. Romanticism is known for its emphasis on
emotion and imagination; Gothicism takes these themes and twists them into something dark and
disturbing. In Gothicism, elements of Romanticism are taken too far to the absolute extreme,
resulting in grotesque outcomes instead of the predictable plot generated by most romantic novels.
Emily Brönte uses the Gothic themes of doppelgänger, sublimity, and revenge to stress the surreal
and outrageous actions and thought of the main characters, Catherine and Heathcliff, in Wuthering
Heights.

Hallucinations Book Report
There can be fake articles and speculations about dopplegangers all over the wolrd but something
that never seems to fail is real–life events in real people. Hallucinations, a very interesting book by
Oliver Sacks, defines a doppelgänger as one who hallucinates oneself, whether it is in the mirror or
in person. In this book, there are real life examples of real people that lived these doppelganger
experiences or close to them. There was an incident of a college student who would have
hallucinations about herself, "For quite some time, I would try to will myself into that pleasant
hallucination. I discovered it usually came after much stress or lack of sleep, and would deprive
myself of sleep in order to achieve the experience of floating amongst the stars..." (Sacks, O. P. 256)
She would literally deprive herself of sleep in order to achieve the good sense of the hallucinations.

Unreciprocated Love: Der Doppelganger By Heinrich Hene
"Der Doppelganger", written by Heinrich Heine, is a poem about unreciprocated love. The main
characters in this work are the narrator and someone that he sees on the street: his doppelganger (an
apparition or double living of a person). As you read through the poem,, it becomes obvious that the
narrator is really the doppelganger and he has become so controlled over his lost love that he sees
his own reflection of sadness in the face of the moon. The poem contains a lot of illustrations that
depict moods such as seclusion, darkness, suffering, heartbreak, and despair; Franz Schubert
attempts to reflect these illustrations in his musical setting of the text. In this piece, Schubert decides
to make it through–composed, meaning each stanza's setting is different although the song is sort of
a passacaglia on the theme of the first four bars of the piano part. His musical setting ... Show more

This gives way to a number of possible scenarios that people have conjured up based on the
knowledge people have on the personalities of both Heine and Schubert. Schubert may have
identified with the notion of the doppelganger because of the double life he himself apparently led.
Eduard Bauernfeld described him, "Schubert had, so to speak, a double nature. . . . Inwardly a kind
of poet and outwardly a kind of hedonist." (***) Now, I mention this because throughout the piece
there has been a slow cutting away of text and music into less measures, which clearly foreshadows
something at the end. This compression expresses the hushed direness of the narrator's situation.
Realizing the Doppelganger's existence, a resolution comes forth. This realization is highlighted by
Schubert's peaking g–natural from m. 41, now finally resolving with the high f–sharp in m. 52. The
leap from b to this f–sharp also signifies the Doppelganger.

Both men are seen acting in very similar manners. In the split nature of Raskolnikov's mind and
conscious Svidrigaylov represents the side of altered reason. As mentioned above reason is governed
by logical determinants. However, due to Raskolnikov embodying a sense of superiority over others
the logical aspect in his reasoning becomes flawed, thus resulting in him turning towards

one main function, to satisfy carnal pleasures in his life– QUOTE!. Representing an 'extraordinary

was one of the key concepts to eerie fiction, as Marshall Brown puts it : "There can be few traditions
so beset with second selves and doppelgangers as the Gothic novel" (Palmer 85).
But in how far do Victor and his created entity belong to this literary idea of the double ? And to
what extent is the protagonist able to be compared to the daemon ? The following paper argues that
the similarity of Victor Frankenstein and his constructed monster goes so far that one can speak of a
double.
In Gothic fiction, which "provides the best known examples of ... Show more content on

There are not many similarities at first sight when investigating these two main personalities.
However, when looking beyond their outward apparent surface, one needs to admit that they have
far more in common than just sharing the connection of creator and creation. The probably most
striking aspect is their repeated urge for going into and hiding in the nature. The monster sees nature
as a welcomed place to just be who he actually is and to hide himself from humans as they are
scared of him and also tend to attack him due to his appearance. On the other hand Victor needs the
nature not only for his mood but also for his health and makes use of it every time he feels under the
weather or is critically ill : "It had then filled me with a sublime ecstacy that gave wings to the soul,
and allowed it to soar from the obscure world to light and joy" (Shelley 66).
Besides nature, it's also remarkable that both characters have a serious drive for knowledge, since
Victor Frankenstein is invigorated by science and devotes himself to create supernatural life. The
daemon's drive for knowledge is visible when he starts understanding human society and secretly
learns how to speak, so that he is able to interact with human

Romanticism In How Clear She Shines

  • 1. Romanticism In How Clear She Shines In this excerpt from Emily Bronte's poem "How Clear She Shines" the elements of Gothicism are displayed clearly. The overall cynical mood sets the scene for a gothic style of writing; the contrasts between truth and treachery, joy and pain, peace and grief, bring out a feeling of unease that is Gothicism. Besides this poem, Emily Bronte wrote an entire gothic novel called Wuthering Heights. This novel portrays two lovers with a very unhealthy relationship in where they are very passionate but take things to the extreme. The lengths they go to for their love start off as romanticism but quickly grow grotesque and morph into Gothicism. Gothicism is a style of writing that is characterized by fear, horror, and death but can also include Romantic qualities like nature, individualism, and emotion. Romanticism is known for its emphasis on emotion and imagination; Gothicism obtains these qualities as well but in a darker twisted way. In Gothicism elements of Romanticism are taken too far to the absolute extreme, resulting in grotesque outcomes instead of the predictable plot generated by most romantic novels. Emily Bronte uses the Gothic themes of doppelgänger, sublimity, and revenge to stress the surreal and outrageous actions and thought of the main characters, Catherine and Heathcliff, in Wuthering Heights. Doppelgänger is a gothic element used in Wuthering Heights to create confusion and discomfort. This element helps to show the odd similarities between Catherine and ... Essay on Doppelganger and King Kong English Speech Introduction: "Good morning/afternoon class and *teacher*, today I will be speaking about how Michael Parker, the author of Doppelganger and Peter Jackson, the director of the film King Kong, accurately portray the main concept of the Beast Within through the symbolism of masks and the notions of betrayal and duplicity. I will be talking about Josh and Andrew from Doppelganger, Carl Denham and the people that he manipulated and affected through his deception, from King Kong and explain their contributions to the main idea of the Beast Within, how they wear a mask and how they portray the concepts of Duplicity and Betrayal." Body Paragraph 1: (Doppelganger) "In Parker's novel, Doppelganger, a key character, Josh, shows that he has a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that Josh gave Andrew the QZ45 meant that there is now a whole new series of events that affect the storyline; Andrew ends up killing 'boy' because the QZ45 has a mental and physical effect, where the taker feels 'ready to fight or kill'. In this case, boy makes Andrew angry, by slashing him with a knife during the chase in the tunnels, and Andrew goes on a crazy rampage and kills boy. Andrew soon becomes very guilty that he killed boy because he realises that in the normal Sydney 'boy' is a kid named Derek, who dies in a car crash, which makes Andrew logically believe that if one person is killed in the Dystopic Sydney, this same happening will reflect in a slightly different manner, in the normal Sydney. Josh also demonstrates the concept of the Beast Within through the plain evil of what he did to Andrew, the evil intentions of Josh were the reason why he did it, it wasn't to save anyone's life, like Andrew ends up doing later on in the text, but it was all part of Josh's scheme to become the owner of the metsin factory so that he could become the richest and most famous person in the Dystopic Sydney, he was willing to kill many people to get his desire and he managed to get a whole gang of 'hallboys' to listen to him and do it. • 9. The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde Frankenstein by author Mary Shelley is a Gothic science fiction novel written in Switzerland between 1816–1817, and published January 1, 1818. Set in eighteenth century Geneva, Frankenstein tells the story of a young man by the name of Victor who goes away to college to study natural philosophy, chemistry, and alchemy. When armed with the knowledge he has long been seeking, Victor spends months constructing a creature out of old body parts, and in the secrecy of his apartment, brings his creation to life. The monstrous abomination later disappears, and when a mysterious series of deaths start to occur in Victor's family, he is certain his creation is the cause, and devotes his life to vanquishing the savage fiend. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published in 1886, is a mystery thriller about a respectable man by the name of Henry Jekyll, who takes a potion to occasionally become a dark and evil character, which he so cleverly calls "Mr. Hyde". Meanwhile Mr. Utterson, Dr. Jekyll's lawyer and close friend, tries to figure out why his dear friend Dr. Jekyll is acting so suspiciously, while simultaneously trying to uncover the origin of Mr. Hyde for himself. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde shares common themes with Mary Shelly's Frankenstein such as dangerous knowledge, monstrosity, and the use of doppelgängers. Both Frankenstein and Jekyll and Hyde, develop the idea of the doppelgänger to emphasize how social ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Role of the Narrator in Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Black Cat' The narrator in "The Black Cat" Edgar Allan Poe is well–known for his captivating tales of the macabre through eloquence and wit. In many of his short stories, Poe was able to exploit his audience's fears through allegory and descriptive details of murder and madness. One of Poe's captivating, yet mad, narrators helms "The Black Cat," a tale of paranoia, alcoholism, and murder. There are several things that make the narrator an intriguing character including his psychological state, the imp of the perverse, and the effect that alcoholism has on him. Like in many of his tales, the narrator murders both his beloved Pluto and his wife, on two separate occasions, yet denies that he has been stricken by madness and is instead intent on setting the record straight. While the narrator blames his actions on his alcoholism, it can be argued that his actions were not only influenced by alcohol, but also by his psyche. For example, he believes that his beloved Pluto's doppelgänger is out to get him. Not only is the doppelgänger a constant reminder of how badly the narrator treated his cat, but it also serves as a constant reminder of how he killed it; the doppelgänger is missing an eye, just like Pluto, and also has a mark that resembles a noose, which is how the narrator killed his cat. It is the doppelgänger's physical appearance that drives the narrator to believe that it is his duty to destroy it before it destroys him. While the narrator never intended on lashing out ... • 29. Doppelgänger In Frankenstein Shelley begins by comparing Frankenstein's actions and thoughts with those of the Creature, demonstrating that within that of one there exists a spectre of the other. Given that doppelgänger are any set of entities which reflect aspects of each other, it is clear that Shelley intends the two to be as such. Frankenstein initially describes his curiosity with the natural world as "among the earliest sensations [remembered by him]" due to the world being to him "a secret, which [he] desired to divine", including the "hidden laws of nature" (Chapter 2). The use of the word 'divine' carries tremendous connotation, as it implies the presence of supernatural intervention; from a young age, Frankenstein has imagined himself as having God–like powers and able to glimpse the machinations of the "hidden laws of nature", all due to his curiosity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Frankenstein's belief is echoed and confirmed to quite an extent by the actions of the creature, which begins life as tabula rasa (consistent with the classical epistemological 'blank slate' theory popularised immediately before Shelley's period), but over time acquires both the ability to converse with exceptional eloquence and to subsist on meagre means as a societal leper; this demonstrates one aspect of the Doppelbeziehung (the relationship between doppelgänger) where Frankenstein's purely conjectural beliefs are taken by his Creature and found to be applicable. Shelley then describes this Doppelbeziehung more explicitly: the creature bemoans the self–inflicted degradation of his virtue after he murders his creator, stating that his [malignity] is even more tragic than that of the biblical Devil, who even "had friends and associates in his desolation... • 33. Similarities Between Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Both virtue and vice is within every man, and it is the balance of these two forces that make one human. The decision to house these traits in separate entities, or to detach them from oneself completely is dehumanizing. Both the protagonists of Dorian Gray and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde undergo this process when they make the decision to create separate apparitions, or doppelgangers, in order to better fit to the mold of society. As each text progresses both Dorian and Jekyll face a series of changes in both themselves and their counterparts, resulting their loss of control. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He uses his doppelganger, Edward Hyde, as a way to justify his need to perform evil acts in a whole separate being. If both good and evil "could be housed in separate identities," Jekyll could live both a noble and vulgar life (Stevenson 65). This decision reveals a great deal about Jekyll's identity, in it that he lacks decency and rational. Dr. Jekyll discovers a desirable sensation when he becomes Mr. Hyde, and a sense of relief. Hyde resembles a much younger man in comparison to Jekyll, due to his years of suppression. After his first transformation Jekyll feels "younger, lighter, [and] happier" in the form of Mr. Hyde (Stevenson 67). Jekyll finds pleasure in becoming Hyde, suggesting that the progression of his doppelganger was under his control, until his need to become Hyde consumed him. Comparatively, Dorian Gray develops his apparition unintentionally, and is unaware of the consequences that will follow. As he realizes that his innocence and beauty is not perpetual, he compares himself to a portrait that "will remain always young," and wishes "it were only the other way," (Wilde 27). His act vitalizes the creation of his doppelganger, the portrait, which will then begin to age with every sin that he commits. • 37. What Does The Uncanny Mean The theme of the 'double' has been explored as a concept frequently over hundreds of years; the most emblematic being in 'The Uncanny' by Sigmund Freud. Freud opens his essay by giving a definition of what "uncanny" is, that it "belongs to the realm of the frightening, of what evokes fear and dread"[]. The words 'heimlich' and 'unheimlich' are used within Freud's essay, as he refers the two they integrate to create the meaning behind what the "uncanny" actually is. He explains the hindrance between one another as 'unheimlich' means something which is hidden or concealed, and 'heimlich' defines the familiar. This paradoxical barrier is what then merges them both to form the "uncanny", when something familiar is integrated which is then perceived as something which is unfamiliar. • 41. Doppelgänger In Gothic Novels The metaphor of the doppelgänger in Gothic Novels may refer to 19th century social fears of insecurities, especially regarding the rules of the classes for decency and politeness and the innovation of science. When focusing on Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Stevenson as well as The Picture of Dorian Gray by Wilde, the evolution of the literary double may be explained by the social situation of Victorian England (cf. Duren 2). Men were not only born into being a gentleman, but they had to adhere to certain moral restrictions. These guidelines meant to repress instincts and emotions in favour of a norm accepted by society. Victorians divided strictly into right and wrong and everything differing from the norm was considered improper. The fulfilment of desires was considered as a weakness and hence, needed to be repressed. Maintaining a man's reputable image before his fellowmen was of great importance, though at the same time, one had to deal with contrary feelings, generally considered as improper or even immoral. Hence, men were in need to repress these emotions for the appreciation of their fellow gentlemen. One had to follow the moral guidelines of the times, especially when ... From the 19th century onwards, the novels are often situated in England of that time. Thus, it is suggested that readers should reflect on the stories, placing them in the context of their own country, while also relating to their own mindset. These new ideas are both shown in Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, both of which were written at the end of the century, often referred to as Gothic Revival. He insists on seating the policemen in the very room where he had assassinated the old man just a few hours before, the old man's body was disclosed beneath the floorboards at the narrator's own admission and admits his crime because of the loud beating of the heart. Throughout the entire story, the readers can expect detailed descriptions of how the murder was accomplished and what thoughts – sane or insane – went on inside the murderer's mind. He prides himself on his strategic planning and mastery at deceiving others. In this story, an effect which may evidently be observed is the doppelganger effect, as depicted in the old man's identification with the murderer who is also the narrator of the story (Chua 350). In various scenes of the story, the narrator revealed that he understands and empathizes with what the old man feels. The narrator feels bad whenever the old man looks like he is having trouble, and he also feels terrified every time the old man looks frightened. Therefore, this shows that the narrator actually had no hostile reason to kill the man since he actually feels for him and/or loves him. However, what made the narrator murder the old man is ... However, it has become a popular device in since the early nineteenth century in the works of some German writers such as E.T.A. Hoffmann and Heinrich Von Kleist In literature, it has gradually taken a profound meaning to represent not simply the double or twin, the mirror image of a character's personality, but often a kind of reversal of it, a negative image, a self which expresses all the darkness and normally in expressible and hidden aspects of the psyche." Simply speaking, Kurtz, the alter ego, stands for the subconscious mind of Conrad, the cryptic, shadowy self which snoop beneath the surface of civilization. In particular, the novel ponders Conrad's state of mind and values about the nature of darkness which obsessed his thoughts for many years. For this obvious reason, David Daiches, in The Novel and Modern World, remarks that '' the heart of darkness is a symbolic experience of what lies at the heart of much human profession and activities.(Daiches, 1960: 41). The Skeleton Council Poem Stephanie Philpott Professor David Barrick Writing 1000G January 28 2015 Analytical Essay– The Skeleton Council by Katherine Leyton The Skelton Council by Katherine Leyton was published in Volume 36 No. 4 of Contemporary Verse 2 during the spring of 2014. The poem opens on a house inhabited by a woman and a group of skeletons that meet every evening for examination. One night, the woman blinks and sees a doppelganger of herself in an empty room. The Skeleton Council by Katherine Leyton uses symbolism, imagery, and style to express the oppressive nature of family secrets and their distortive and obsessive effects on the narrator. The first half of the poem is comprised of a more complex syntax than the second half. The sentences in the first half are longer, averaging 3 lines each and use a more descriptive diction with words such as "anxious"(line 3), "encouraging"(line 5), and "sideboards"(line 2). This heavier style brings forward an oppressive element as the meaning is trapped behind dense language. In the second half, the style becomes more simplistic with sentences averaging 1–2 lines and word choice becoming more concise. This change in style clearly presents the meaning in the second half taking away the oppressive atmosphere and reinforcing the distortion of the narrators' feelings. In The Skeleton Council by Katherine Leyton, the symbolism of skeletons as well as the juxtaposition that imagery and style form with the narrator's feelings are utilized throughout the poem. Psychological Doubling Frankenstein Frankenstein–The Doppelganger and It's Effect "Especially in the literature of Romanticism, the double figure or doppelganger emerges as a central object of fascination for the imagining self, by turns compulsion and recompense, endowment and disaster." (Gross, Vo.22 pg. 20) A majority of the literature population uses the literary device the doppelganger. A doppelganger uses a psychological perspective of a character by taking that character's hidden wants and desires and making them a completely separate character in the novel. This character then is paired with vaguely similar traits, thus making the two appear as twins but one is the guarded twin and the other being the twin that lives out all the hidden wants and desires. With his father never approving of him Victor's ideal self will never be achieved, thus creating a guilty hole in Victor's emotional psyche. This ultimately can cause a person to bury their hidden desires as Victor seemed to. But of course we cannot forget part of ourselves. Victor's unconscious mind developed through his own creation, the monster (Frankenstein). A person's ideal self is not the negative desires it is what you wish to achieve, making Frankenstein a role model to Victor rather than a haunting memory. In the novel we immediately believe that Frankenstein, the monster, is the evil twin because of his twisted and gruesome appearance accompanied with his crazed killing spree, and then added with his harassment on Victor Frankenstein his creator. However, Freud believes that the evil twin is marked by a plague, which most often appears as a disease or sickness. The Doppelgänger Effect Ender’s Game Essay The Doppelgänger Effect Ender's Game Orson Scott Card is a science–fiction/fantasy writer only in the sense that the setting that he uses fits the definition of the genre. His writings deal with many relevant social issues that most people have not noticed and/or refuse to acknowledge. His book, Ender's Game, is a subtle study of many of these issues. This story of a boy genius shows, in slightly less than subtle terms, the horrible cruelty of children, and the immense amount of pressure that adults force upon children, whether intentional or not. Unfortunately this got the wrong kind of attention. Ender is just as detested because of his advantage. His peers are so incredibly cruel. They are all his age, anywhere from 6 – 12 years old. Many adults will not accept that children can be as cruel as they really are. No, to most adults, children are the innocents; those who have not been exposed to true harshness and meanness and therefore can know nothing about it. These adults, in my point of view, are more naïve than they believe the children to be. This makes the adults just as cruel as the children. Their refusal to admit that their angels are really little demons makes them just as cruel for not trying to stop it from happening. The cruelty of the children is almost an obvious theme. What I began to notice as I read it over and over is the cruelty of the adults in the story. Doppelgänger In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein "Doppelgänger" is a German phrase from the mid–nineteenth century meaning mirror image, which correlates to the conception that two individuals are a living double. Thousands of years ago, individuals considered an ancient widespread belief of spiritual doubles to be a sign of impending death. This was primarily due to the lack of scientific knowledge and study, which lead society to gain faith in paranormal activities. Those cases of doppelgänger are referred to as, "evil twin" (Ancient Origin 5) which means that the identical other may seem as a favorable shadow, but in reality, is a malevolent and hostile being. Furthermore, these cases are considered works of fiction, where people experience actual scenarios of meeting their sinister ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Frankenstein chooses to shun him because he is immensely disgusted by its physical appearance. For example, this is shown by the resentment the creature shows when he states, "...Yet you, my creator, detest and spurn me..." (Shelley 111) In addition, the disfigured beast also portrays the obsessive behavior of ambition, which makes him mentally identical to his maker, against whom he seeks revenge. However, his objective is mainly focused on finding his master and making him suffer for the unethical acts that he has committed. Eventually he meets his creator and demands him to create a female mate, someone who he can relate to and share the similar grotesque persona with. Temporarily he receives assurance upon his request, but later Frankenstein reneges on his vow. This causes the creature to threaten his creator and swear that he will exact revenge upon him and his family. Given the fact that William has already been murdered and Justine was framed for it, Frankenstein cannot ignore the powerful threat. The wretch is an incredible mastermind when it comes to committing murder because he flees multiple times and successfully manages to avoid leaving any evidence behind. His passion to destroy his creator blinds him while he takes the lives of the innocent. This is proven when step–by–step, he takes away all the members with whom his maker shares a close bond. Soon, the creature murders Henry Clerval, Frankenstein's dearest childhood friend and promises him, "I will be with you on your wedding night." • 81. Theme Of Darkness In A Tell Tale Heart The restricted societal norms of the Victorian Era forced non–conforming ideas and behaviors into the shadows, much like the fictitious vampires or psychopaths. A wide swath of vampire lore reflects this repression. Vampires cannot exist in the light of day, and thus are forced to go out only under the cover of darkness. If light represents "enlightenment", a popular literary movement in the Victorian era, then darkness must symbolize what was deemed unfit for civilized society. In "A Tell– Tale Heart", Poe's nameless narrator only obsesses over the old man's vulture–eye at night. What does this have to do with repression? It can be interpreted that the narrator knows his intention to kill the old man is evil, and so he represses his desire under the cover of night. The act of repression is solely committed by one's mind, and as Freud would argue, the subconscious in particular. Freud established the theory that the psyche is divided into the id, ego, and superego; and these three forces battle to control the subconscious. This internal turmoil presents itself consistently in gothic literature, and often is interpreted through mirrors and doppelgängers. In "A Tell–Tale Heart" the narrator's fixation with the old man's glassy vulture–eye could symbolize the narrator's fixation with a part of himself he wants to repress. Eye is a homonym of I, and there are plenty of examples in the text which suggest that there is no old man, only the narrator who manifests this "old man" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 85. The Importance Of Mystery And Suspense In Literature Why does gothic horror even matter in literature? Gothic horror can create many things in a novel more interesting or suspenseful of what will happen next. These stories use different characteristics to create a gothic atmosphere in the story. During the Victorian era, the idea of gothic literature grew in popularity. It is influenced by many ideas, including religious themes around this time period, and usually reflects on the characteristics of the people living in the Victorian era. For example, many people would like to be surrounded in a world containing plenty of mystery and suspense. Then again, a supernatural force can show what someone might or might not want to become. On top of that, a doppelganger in gothic literature definitely represents who the reader should avoid being. As a result, gothic horror is important to a reader because of how it can connect to their lives in a certain way. In the novel Dracula, author Bram Stoker focuses on multiple elements of gothic horror which apply to the many characters in the novel and can compare to contemporary works that have gothic elements, as well. In any novel, mystery and suspense is a popular characteristic but contributes very well to what makes a novel have a gothic theme. Here, mystery and suspense is built throughout the novel based on the predicament of the characters. Initially, mystery is built very early on in the story, where the reader is interested to know who the Count is, based on the thoughts of other characters Jonathan Harker meets. When Harker says he is going to meet the Count, he meets a woman who told him not to go, and Jonathan explains that she then "took a crucifix from her neck and offered it to me" (Stoker 5). This gives a thought to the reader on why Jonathan is being given a crucifix for meeting the Count, thus builds suspense on why it is symbolic of the story. Furthermore, early on in the novel, Jonathan, along with the reader, are wondering why he is trapped in the castle, which makes the reader think about what will happen to Jonathan next. This builds up to the reveal of Jonathan's predicament, where he explains, "The castle is a veritable prison, and I am a prisoner!" (28). Not only does this make the reader wonder of ... It is about two women, Bella and Zelda, who are old and feel inadequate and insecure about themselves. It can also be implied from the story that they are in fact seeking love. Bella overhears some men talking to each other on the stairs of her new apartment everyday. She calls her close friend Zelda and they come to know that these men are indeed the ghosts of Ollie and Stanley (Television actors). The story reveals that these ghosts are actually seeking love like Bella and Zelda. Bella and Zelda help these ghosts realize that they are still being loved and are not forgotten. The topic of this essay is "How doppelgangers are employed to reveal the protagonist's character?". The ghosts in this story felt that they are not loved anymore and Bella and Zelda also felt the same thing and also, Bella and Zelda were totally aware of how the ghosts felt, meaning that in one way or the other the ghost were doppelgangers of the protagonists of the story. That is how Ray Bradbury is using ghosts as doppelgangers to reveal the protagonist's character. Bella had just moved in her new apartment a few days ago. The author uses "old house on an old street with an old staircase" (393) to describe the apartment. This is actually a metaphor for Bella's old age. He also used "it was all new to her" (393) implying that this old age was new to Bella and she was not used to not being appreciated. She ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 117. Coraline Symbolism A dream turned into a nightmare. This happens to Coraline, the main protagonist in the novel Coraline by Neil Gaiman. In the novel, a young girl named Coraline moves into a large house divides into apartments. She lives with her parents who both work, leaving Coraline to feel ignored. One day she accesses a portal to a mirror like house where her "other" parents live. At first her "other" parents seem like a dream, offering her whatever she wants and giving her constant attention. Coraline soon learns that the "other" world is not all that it seems and that she must escape in order to save herself and her parents. Unlike most children books, Coraline is a creepy postmodern fairy tale that uses elements of the uncanny to evoke fear in the reader. Freud's concept of the uncanny is helpful in explaining the text's appeal, and it's creepy uneasiness. Coraline focuses on people's fears about existence and identity as individual beings. Coraline must battle against her other mother to be independent from her and thus develop her own identity and desires. While the novel appears to be a mild horror story, Henry Selicks' stop action photography adaptation of the novel has a different tone and uses concepts of the uncanny is more subtle ways. By using added characters, deleted scenes, and less grotesque imagery Henry Selick is able a children's adventure story while Neil Gaiman's novel focused on concepts of the uncanny and the fear of losing one's identity. The film begins with an evocative opening scene in which a pair of skeletal, robotic hands stich a doll identical to Coraline and then sends it floating out of a window. For most viewers the doll is viewed as a spy for the other mother. It is a portal between the two worlds that allows the other mother to cross between both. It is used to heighten the picture's anti realistic, otherworldly mood (time). The scene was not in the novel and was instead added to make references to the uncanny that is used more in the novel. The doll being made is uncanny. The stitching of the doll is unsettling because it is non–human hands acting in a human way. It may be used to show the "other self" of a character, which he or she has not discovered yet. This "other self" could be the darker side of the character that troubles, or the brighter side that motivates. Hence, the use of doppelganger helps writers to portray complex characters. The id, as manifested in the persona of Hyde, requires ever more extreme forms of repression (such as a complete suppression of this identity through Jekyll's refusal to take the drug that causes the transformation). The most extreme form of repression is self–annihilation, as readers see when Jekyll kills himself to repress Hyde. This is expressed greatly in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are a few terms that can relate to doppelgangers like 'bi–location'. Bi– location is a term that refers to a person that can either spontaneously or willingly project his or her double, known as a "wrath," to remote location (Wagner 1). In instances, a doppelganger is believed to act as a mimicker to the authentic person. In many other folk stories around the world, like in the mythological story of Apollo and Artemis, there are countless of stories about twins from different genders that are siblings or related. Apollo was adopted as the sun god and Artemis was adopted as the moon goddess. The story of Apollo and Artemis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is clear to see that the couple has a double. One of the couples has a glowing outline. This indicates that this couple is the doppelgänger while the other is the original pair. This doppelgänger pair brings a sense of intimidation, danger and frightfulness. The doppelgängers look like they are trying to frighten as well as intimidate the original pair. By the looks of it, the original couple is very frightened and their actions look like they are almost too startled that they do not know what to do. The original male is actually very shocked to see his doppelgänger. Meanwhile, the original woman looks like she is extremely frightened as well as shocked and it appears that she is about to faint. She is trying to regain her health by leaning back on the tree. She's holding her hands out most likely in disbelief and a need for support. It almost catches a sense of satire. The male doppelgänger is staring with intensity towards the original male in order to intimidate him. The glowing outline makes it easy to differentiate the couple. What is pretty interesting about this piece is that Rossetti painted this while on a honeymoon in Paris with his beloved newlywed wife Lizzy. It was his way of expressing his love to her at the moment. The glowing outline makes it easy to differentiate the couple. In the song 'Doppelganger' by the band 'The Antlers,' it is clear to see that the singer is posing as a character who has an evil doppelgänger. Just like the incident with Abraham Lincoln, this doppelgänger is not a real person, but rather a reflection in the mirror. The singer, Peter Silberman, quotes as he sings about his doppelgänger, "Can you hear me when I'm trapped behind the mirror? / A doppelgänger roaring from my silent kind of furor? / If you're quiet, you can hear the monster breathing.../ do you hear that gentle tapping? / my ugly creature's ... • 133. Archetypes In Hamlet Archetypes are a constant throughout the classic of literature, an invaluable tool for the character's thought process and how they'll react to everything. Even the infamous playwright and poet, William Shakespeare, uses it to enhances his stories. For instance, in Shakespeare's Hamlet, the play is known for its archetype. For instance, Laertes is often considered as the doppelganger archetype of Hamlet. Often, he's believed to be the only one that's able to fill in the position of equal standing with Hamlet. However, although many people would've come to the assumption that Laertes is Hamlet's doppelganger, because of his desires for vengeance against the people who've wronged him and how his personality contrasts Hamlet's character, Ophelia is the true foil of not only Hamlet, but Laertes as well. However, to understand archetypes, it's a must to start with a little review on psychoanalysis, especially its evolution. From the beginning of archetypes, it began with Carl Jung, in the late nineteenth to the mid–twentieth century, being considered the successor of psychoanalysis. Similar to Sigmund Freud, Jung was fascinated by the human being's psyche and its evolution over time. He believed a person's past, aspirations, and experiences shape their characters–– who'd they become in the future. However, while both psychologists' studies revolved around a person's psyche and their mental wellbeing, Jung primarily focused on the attributes that contributed to the psyche's ... • 137. Elements Of Gothicism In How Clear She Shines By Emily Bronte In this excerpt from Emily Brönte's poem "How Clear She Shines" the elements of Gothicism are displayed clearly. The overall cynical mood sets the scene for a gothic style of writing; the contrasts between truth and treachery, joy and pain, peace and grief, bring out a feeling of unease that is Gothicism. Emily Bronte expounded on these themes in her novel Wuthering Heights, a classic work of gothic fiction. This novel portrays two lovers with a very unhealthy relationship in which they are very passionate but take their passion to the extreme. The lengths they go for their love can initially be classified as traditional romanticism, but love turns into obsession and quickly grows grotesque. This transformation marks the transition from Romanticism into Gothicism. Gothicism is a style of writing that is characterized by fear, horror, and death, but can also include Romantic qualities like nature, individualism, and emotion. Romanticism is known for its emphasis on emotion and imagination; Gothicism takes these themes and twists them into something dark and disturbing. In Gothicism, elements of Romanticism are taken too far to the absolute extreme, resulting in grotesque outcomes instead of the predictable plot generated by most romantic novels. Emily Brönte uses the Gothic themes of doppelgänger, sublimity, and revenge to stress the surreal and outrageous actions and thought of the main characters, Catherine and Heathcliff, in Wuthering Heights. Hallucinations, a very interesting book by Oliver Sacks, defines a doppelgänger as one who hallucinates oneself, whether it is in the mirror or in person. In this book, there are real life examples of real people that lived these doppelganger experiences or close to them. There was an incident of a college student who would have hallucinations about herself, "For quite some time, I would try to will myself into that pleasant hallucination. I discovered it usually came after much stress or lack of sleep, and would deprive myself of sleep in order to achieve the experience of floating amongst the stars..." (Sacks, O. P. 256) She would literally deprive herself of sleep in order to achieve the good sense of the hallucinations. Many other experiments connected with OBEs (out–of–body experiences). • 145. Unreciprocated Love: Der Doppelganger By Heinrich Hene "Der Doppelganger", written by Heinrich Heine, is a poem about unreciprocated love. The main characters in this work are the narrator and someone that he sees on the street: his doppelganger (an apparition or double living of a person). As you read through the poem,, it becomes obvious that the narrator is really the doppelganger and he has become so controlled over his lost love that he sees his own reflection of sadness in the face of the moon. The poem contains a lot of illustrations that depict moods such as seclusion, darkness, suffering, heartbreak, and despair; Franz Schubert attempts to reflect these illustrations in his musical setting of the text. In this piece, Schubert decides to make it through–composed, meaning each stanza's setting is different although the song is sort of a passacaglia on the theme of the first four bars of the piano part. His musical setting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This gives way to a number of possible scenarios that people have conjured up based on the knowledge people have on the personalities of both Heine and Schubert. Schubert may have identified with the notion of the doppelganger because of the double life he himself apparently led. Eduard Bauernfeld described him, "Schubert had, so to speak, a double nature. . . . Inwardly a kind of poet and outwardly a kind of hedonist." (***) Now, I mention this because throughout the piece there has been a slow cutting away of text and music into less measures, which clearly foreshadows something at the end. This compression expresses the hushed direness of the narrator's situation. Realizing the Doppelganger's existence, a resolution comes forth. This realization is highlighted by Schubert's peaking g–natural from m. 41, now finally resolving with the high f–sharp in m. 52. The leap from b to this f–sharp also signifies the Doppelganger. ... • 149. Comparing Doppelganger In Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll And Mr Commonly found within literature is the theme of the doppelganger. Usually taking the shadow or a mirror image of a protagonist it may also refer to a character that physically resembles or has a similar mind set as the protagonist. They may even have the same name as well. Found in many works such as: The ghost of Hamlet's father in Shakespeare's "Hamlet", the nose from Gogol's Nos, and in Robert Louis Stevenson's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" forms of the doppelganger or double emerge. There are several types of doppelgangers that have been created to better support what the author wishes to state about their main character. Both men are seen acting in very similar manners. In the split nature of Raskolnikov's mind and conscious Svidrigaylov represents the side of altered reason. As mentioned above reason is governed by logical determinants. However, due to Raskolnikov embodying a sense of superiority over others the logical aspect in his reasoning becomes flawed, thus resulting in him turning towards consumption, similar to Svidrigailov. As commonly noted in the novel Svidrigailov is seen having one main function, to satisfy carnal pleasures in his life– QUOTE!. Representing an 'extraordinary man" he believes that since the world is at its foundation an evil and vile place; man must therefore become in tune with the universe and become evil himself, allowing him to become free of having to controls one own will and power. This is a commonly debated thought found in the mind of Raskolnikov who is constantly attempting to punish himself but on the other hand is also seen justifying his crime and falling into this extraordinary or nihilistic point of view. Another similarity between the two is the action of charity. Svidrigailov commits his own acts of charity simply because of his impulsive behavior to act upon things that grant him pleasure. This can similarly be said about Raskolnikov who seems to commit his own acts of charity in a seemingly impulsive fashion as well lending to the nihilistic persona. The nihilistic thought however changes within both men at the end of the book. In Svidrigaylov's case once realizing that he cannot fully isolate himself from the rest of humanity. This is brought on upon the denial of Dunya in his attempted marriage proposal. Forced to realize that his old method of living is shattered he must take the only course left for ... • 153. Examples Of The Doppelganger Motif In Frankenstein Playing a significant role in Gothic literature, many authors have made use of the doppelganger motif, just like Mary Shelley in her most famous work "Frankenstein". Back in that time doubling was one of the key concepts to eerie fiction, as Marshall Brown puts it : "There can be few traditions so beset with second selves and doppelgangers as the Gothic novel" (Palmer 85). But in how far do Victor and his created entity belong to this literary idea of the double ? And to what extent is the protagonist able to be compared to the daemon ? The following paper argues that the similarity of Victor Frankenstein and his constructed monster goes so far that one can speak of a double. In Gothic fiction, which "provides the best known examples of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are not many similarities at first sight when investigating these two main personalities. However, when looking beyond their outward apparent surface, one needs to admit that they have far more in common than just sharing the connection of creator and creation. The probably most striking aspect is their repeated urge for going into and hiding in the nature. The monster sees nature as a welcomed place to just be who he actually is and to hide himself from humans as they are scared of him and also tend to attack him due to his appearance. On the other hand Victor needs the nature not only for his mood but also for his health and makes use of it every time he feels under the weather or is critically ill : "It had then filled me with a sublime ecstacy that gave wings to the soul, and allowed it to soar from the obscure world to light and joy" (Shelley 66). Besides nature, it's also remarkable that both characters have a serious drive for knowledge, since Victor Frankenstein is invigorated by science and devotes himself to create supernatural life. The daemon's drive for knowledge is visible when he starts understanding human society and secretly learns how to speak, so that he is able to interact with human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
